It’s my goal that in the next nine years I would read at least one commentary for every book in the Bible–so I can recommend a good commentary for the books in the Bible.
It is partly as my own devotional reading through the Scriptures and partly because of being asked what good commentaries I’ve read that I would recommend for certain books. Since I realized I need to read more Bible commentaries, I thought this might be a good project on Veritas Domain.
Sometime this week I’ll post up a page that list out what has already been done. I will be reviewing expository and exegetical commentaries.
SJ,
Sounds like a very ambitious project, but much needed as well. Over the years I have developed a fondness for the older commentaries (Gill, Poole, Calvin etc.) over much of the more recent stuff.
I’m really looking forward to your choices for each book. Lord bless you!
I need to look through some of the older commentaries then! I do find that in general I like older works on theology than some of the new works out there and I’m sure it would be the same with commentaries when I eventually get to them! =)
Reblogged this on My Delight and My Counsellors.
Thanks for sharing this!
Sounds like a major project, and one well-worth lauding! I have been reading back through the Bible with a commentary on each book, but I suspect it will take much longer than 9 years.
I suspect 9 years might be going fast for me as well! I need to put priorities for Bible Commentaries the next few years over theology and apologetics =)
That is, much longer than 9 years for myself! I’ve been taking lots of notes and writing my own comments as I go, so I have written about 200 pages so far.
That’s a lot of notes =)
Looking forward to this series! You’re work will maybe one day the great Dr. Rosscup’s work on the commentary on commentaries!
Ah, it’s mimicking Rosscup’s great work…but a small imitation of his work =)
