For those of you who have Amazon Prime Francis Schaeffer’s famous Christian worldview series “How Should We Then Live?” is available on Amazon Prime! It is a series of 10 videos surveying the history of Western civilization and the flow of worldviews that shaped each era. On their website they sell the DVD series for 22 dollars so if you have Amazon Prime this is not only a deal but something edifying and worthwhile.
The description of the series on Amazon Prime gives these words:
This is Dr. Francis Schaeffer’s spectacular ten-part series on the rise and decline of Western culture from a Christian perspective.

I have been blessed watching this series over ten years ago and I also enjoyed the book.
Good recommendation, Jim. Our previous church’s pastor played 4 or 5 segments for the men’s group. Good stuff. I also got a kick out of Schaeffer’s knickers.
Yeah, I got a kick out of his knickers and his beard together. I didn’t know what to make of it as first. It was like he was a prophet from the past and different. For the series I especially like the last three episodesand found it quite relevant and prophetic.
I think we discussed Schaeffer a little bit before. As I understand it, Schaeffer picked up some of his cues from Rushdoony, then Falwell, Dobson, Robertson, and others picked up their cues from Schaeffer to move into political activism. We then got the Moral Majority and other such movements but the Gospel often took a backseat. I did a book search at Amazon using “Rushdoony Falwell Schaeffer” and came up with one book. I might have to pick it up some day because I am very interested in the Dominionism/Reconstruction movement.
Yeah I recall now we had this discussion! Thanks for the link to that book; I remember seeing even theonomists affirming that book did a good job describing Rushdoony; I think Rushdoony’s organization Chalcedon had a positive review of it when it came out. Let me know what your thoughts are with theonomy sometime.
I’m definitely not a fan of theonomy or anything remotely similar to it. I’m sure you’ve read a few of my posts about Christians and nationalism. I take the approach that we’re much more pilgrims and ambassadors of our Father’s Kingdom in this world than deeply rooted national patriots. I realize this is contrary to what has been preached from American pulpits for 200 years with America being portrayed as the second chosen nation. The church has always had a hard time figuring out it’s proper relationship with the state and too often erred on the side of collusion. I’m really interested in that Falwell-Moral Majority episode. The church allowed politics to become its priority and fostered an ecumenism with religious unbelievers based on shared “moral values.” My old fundy Baptist church patterned itself after Falwell and Liberty Baptist and it grated on me (along with several other things) until we left.

Thanks Vince for the reblog! How are you by the way?
You’re very welcome Pastor Jim. I’m doing good, will be starting some light exercising at home on Monday
I first read Schaeffer when I was in high school in the 70’s —loved his work….
still exceedingly timely and perhaps even more relevant today….
Wow you read him back then when he was still around! Have you heard him speak/preach before?
No but my God father– the episcopal priest use to quote him and speak of him often
Thanks for sharing SlimJim!
