This is point 3 of our series on “God created roles for Men from Genesis 2.”
This series is exploring four truths about manhood from Genesis 2:15-18a so that men would live up to God’s design of your identity today.
So what’s point number 3?
Truth #3: Man is not meant to be alone
- Point: Man is unique than other creatures and creation.
- Passage: “It is not good for the man to be alone;” (v.18a)
- Proof
- This verse clearly states “It is not good for the man to be alone.”
- At first this seems like a contradiction; didn’t Genesis 1:31 say “God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day?” How could it not be good and very good?
- Remember Genesis 1:31 is part of the end of Genesis 1 that is a summary of God’s finished creation; chapter 2 further describes God’s creation of man and woman in details. So to pit Genesis 1 and Genesis 2 against each other is like pitting the trailer of a movie against the movie itself.
- Note Genesis 1:31 pronounces “it was very good” after the creation of man and woman in Genesis 1:27. In other words it was very good after man was not alone.
- Next session we will see what God created in order for man not to be alone. But here we make the observation that man is not meant to be alone.
- Practice
- Those married, do you see marriage is a gift from God so that you would not be alone?
- What if one is not married? Is it still true that man is not meant to be alone? Yes! Man is still not meant to be alone but be a part of a community. Have you noticed how weird men get when they get older and are alone? Let that sink and make you sober: Men, you are not meant to be alone even if you are not married.
- If you are single, how are you part of the community that God has placed you in?
- Have you loved:
- Your parents?
- Your siblings?
- Your Church?
- Your marriage?
- Your kids?
- Have you worked hard for:
- Your parents?
- Your siblings?
- Your Church?
- Your marriage?
- Your kids?
- Have you protected:
- Your parents?
- Your siblings?
- Your Church?
- Your marriage?
- Your kids?
- Picture: A man chases after a mirage of people in the desert and not see the nomads he lives with. Don’t just look for an ideal and imaginary future community, look at the people you are with now.
Ultimately though we should not make relationship int our functional gods or idols, but we should seek God as our God. Seek God first in not being alone. And let your walk with God flow out of how you are as man who is married, in your family, church and community.

Thanks for this lesson. Yes, the Lord blesses us with family, friends, and aquaintances. Many times I would rather sit by myself and read a good book rather than reach out and minister to those in my immediate circle.
You’re welcome Tom. My nature apart from Christ would be to be alone with my books. I’m actually an introverts although some around me laugh at that and disagree. It’s the grace of God working in my life that moves me to reach out and minister to others. Speaking of which, when I’m gone doing missions next month I was wondering if you want to write a guest post for the blog? Would you want to do a guest post on doing family devotions with your wife, perhaps with some practical tips and helpful thoughts and encourgements? I would like to encourage more of those around me to go through God’s Word together as couples.
I used to be very embarrassed about being an introvert until a college professor explained how everyone is wired differently and one personality type isn’t “better” than another. The Lord uses our different talents and personalities for the edification of the whole body. My wife is an extrovert and a blog ministry would be painful torture for her. But, yeah, the Lord doesn’t want me to stay locked up in my man cave all week either.
I would be happy to write a guest blog on devotions with my wife. Thanks for asking me! It’s a topic very near and dear to my heart. You’ll have to clue me in on the technicalities of how to submit a guest post to your blog though and when you need it by.
