This is point 3 of our series on “God created roles for Men from Genesis 2.”
This series aim to explore four truths about manhood from Genesis 2:15-18a so that men would live up to God’s design of your identity today.
So what’ is the final point of what we can learn from Genesis 2:15-18a?
Truth #4: Man is created to be a leader
- Proof
- Before the creation of the first woman, man was in charge of the animals
- Recall Genesis 1:26b: Man is to “rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth,”
- Also Genesis 1:28b: Man is to “rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that [am]moves on the earth.”
- Man is also to be the leader of his wife
- Man was created first before woman.
- Creation of man is in verse 7: “Then the Lord God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being”
- Creation of woman is in verse 22: “The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.”
- This does not contradict Genesis 1’s account of creation of man and woman since here it gives more details than the summary in Genesis 1.
- Man was created first before woman. This is important for the rest of this chapter and later development in the New Testament.
- The New Testament’s observation that man was created first before woman means man is the leader and not the other way around in the area of family and church.
- God’s Word states the following 1 Timothy 2:12-13: “But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.”
- The Apostle’s Paul argument is that a woman is not to have authority over man because of the order of creation of man being created first.
- Now animals were first before Adam but God does not say animals are to exercise authority over man.
- Rather it takes God’s special revelation that He intended man to be the leader of his wife.
- God’s Word states the following 1 Timothy 2:12-13: “But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. 13 For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve.”
- Man was created first before woman.
- Before the creation of the first woman, man was in charge of the animals
- Practice:
- Do you believe God’s Word of what it says about how man and woman was created and the sequence of events described in Scripture?
- The husband being a leader is not in of itself sinful for this is before the Fall. Husbands, do you strive to be a godly leaders?
- In future sessions we will explore more on what biblical headship of the husband mean, are you willing to do things God’s Way instead of your own way?

I think many people are so quick to object to this view because we have lost sight of what true biblical leadership looks like. The multitude of selfish, overbearing, apathetic leaders in our workplace and culture distort our perception. Good article!
“I think many people are so quick to object to this view because we have lost sight of what true biblical leadership looks like.”<–I think you hit on the nail there Nicolas! If we are conscious of what biblical leadership looks like, some of the roadblocks are removed. Thank you my friend for droppy by, reading and commenting.
Agreed!
