I’m here blogging at the Shepherd’s Conference. Mark Dever, Pastor at Capital Hill Baptist Church taught a seminar on how to build a healthy church. It was very edifying and helpful.
Here are the top 5 quotes form his message.
- Your congregation is like your children, you teach them hundreds of times.
- If you want to practice church discipline, the first thing you got to do is study the Bible.
- My spiritual life is the business of other people.
- Teach them to say aloud “Amen” to show them they own the prayers.
- Investigate the heart like a good surgeon and may you make mercy of Christ sweet.
Over the years I have found Mark Dever to be extremely helpful with areas of practical ecclesisology (doctrines of the Church) and have greatly benefited from his writings, sermons and other teachings.
Brothers and sisters, love the Church and may we “be” the Church according to God’s Way as revealed in the Word!
I know Dever’s encouragements were for pastors, but they were a blessing for me to read as well. As the spiritual leader in our home, my spiritual life is my wife’s business and I better be setting a good example.
Praise the Lord! Did you know you can watch the sessions live online?
Thanks. I appreciate that option but sometimes I’m not able to listen at work for extended periods, but only for short snippets here and there. Have a good last day at the conference today!
Blessings…thanks 🙂
Likewise may the Lord bless you! How has your week been thus far sister?
I especially like #3…
Good quotes. Hope you are having a good time.
Thanks! I hope you have a good Saturday! It’s raining in California and it made me thought about the rain you guys were getting a few weeks back which I imagined has stopped or slow down?
Well, sunny two days in a row now!
Can a digital speaker be a biblical shepherd? I question the whole idea of celebrity speakers being classified as shepherds. These multi-site campus things are mini-denominations. It is not healthy for the flock to be so enamored with a singular personality. ( I am of Paul I am of Appolos I am of Dever ).Can you know all of the sheep intimately if your congregation exceeds lets say 200?
Also I am appalled by this acceptance and promotion of deeds over creeds missionalism. Jesus sent his disciples out in pairs to witness. They were to be taken in by the people they were ministering the word to. The great commission does not imply church run health and welfare to the lost. The church s to take care of its own first and foremost. My Lord and Savior knows me by name. He knows me better than I know myself. Real shepherds should at least be able to know the names of everyone and have personal affection for every soul in the flock.
