Lessons
1. Learn general knowledge about bodies of water and rivers.
Tool 1: Read Ellen Lawrence’s Covered in Water pages 10-16.
Tool 2: Questions
What is your favorite picture from what we read?
What is something you learned from the reading?
What are any other questions you might have from the reading?
Tool 3: Further period of interactive instructions
Ponds are small body of water.
Ponds are usually referring to a still body of water only a few feet deep.
Lakes are larger body of water.
Lakes can be fresh water or salt water.
Twenty one percent of all the earth’s surface fresh water is at the Great Lakes in North America (Ellen Lawrence’s Covered in Water, 15).
There are five lakes at the Great Lake (point to it on a globe and/or world map):
Lake Ontario
Lake Erie
Lake Huron
Lake Michigan
Lake Superior
Oceans are even larger body of water.
The earth has five Oceans.
The five Oceans are (point to it on a globe and/or world map):
Atlantic Ocean
Pacific Ocean
Indian Ocean
Arctic Ocean
Southern Ocean
The biggest of the five Oceans is the Pacific Ocean. It covers up 30 percent of the earth (https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/geography/general-geography/ocean-facts/#!/register).
Rivers are often fresh water.
“The word upriver (or upstream) refers to the direction of the river’s water source, while downriver (or downstream) refers to the direction in which the water flows, i.e. towards the end of the river.” (http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/earth/rivers.html)
2. Learn the vocabulary concerning bodies of water and rivers.
(Note: Write down the vocabularies on a white board)
- Pond: A small body of water that is surrounded by land.
- Lake: A body of water larger than pond which is surrounded by land.
- Sea: A body of water larger than a lake.
- Ocean: A very large sea; a large body of salt water.
- River: A large stream of water moving towards another stream, lake, sea or ocean.
- Mouth of River: This is where a river end and the water enters into a lake, sea or ocean.
- Riverbed: The bottom of the river.
- Bank: The side of a river.
3. Illustrate what is learned in this lesson about bodies of water and rivers.
Have four blocks to draw in.
First block label and draw a picture of the Ocean. (feel free to include pictures of Ocean creatures building from the lessons on Ocean Sea Creature series).
Second block label and draw a river.
Third block draw a river again. This time label and draw arrows identifying a river bank.
Fourth block label and draw a lake. (Feel free to add pictures of fishes to show the circle is a lake).
Switch paper and see the similarities and differences in one another’s drawings.
4. Learn a spiritual lesson concerning Christ’s control over bodies of water.
Tool 1: Bible
“On that day, when evening came, He *said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 Leaving the crowd, they *took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him. 37 And there *arose a fierce gale of wind, and the waves were breaking over the boat so much that the boat was already filling up. 38 Jesus Himself was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they *woke Him and *said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 And He got up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Hush, be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm. 40 And He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41 They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”” (Mark 10:35-41)
The event took place on the Sea of Galilee (identify it on a map).
Notice the rough conditions described in verse 37.
Jesus’ response is found in verses 39-40.
The disciples’ response is in verse 41 which shows that they realize Jesus is in control of even the sea.
Tool 2: Questions
Are you amazed that Jesus can control the sea and the storm?
What areas of your life can you trust in God today?
Review: Share what you learn today.

Thanks for the reblog!
Thanks for another look at the Lord’s creation, for young and old. There are few things that reveal the wondrous power of God more than the majestic vastness of the oceans. Here in Rochester we have many bodies of water; Lake Ontario, the Genesee River, the Erie Canal, and the Finger Lakes, but amazingly, the civic planners did not have the foresight to capitalize on these resources for the greater public good. Ninety-nine percent of the shoreline is privately held with very little public access.
Wow you live near the Great Lakes that I teach my girls about! How cool is that! My girls would love to see the places we learn about. I’m sad to hear that these shorlines are largely private. Isn’t amazing to consider that the Great Lakes contain 21 percent of the Earth’s fresh Water? By the way in my post on Jephthah I just linked to your post on Jephthah in hopes that it drive traffic to your post as you added further contribution to that discussion.
My parents used to take us to the lake all the time in the summer when we were kids. We have a big public beach where the Genesee River runs into Lake Ontario but the water is kind of dirty there because of the river silt. Kodak used to dump large amounts of waste into the river back in the days when it was an industrial giant. Hey, thanks so much for the link up! Jephthah is getting around quite a bit lately!
So cute, Slim. Makes me want to go to school. 🙂
