An excerpt from my outline for my lectures.
We’re answering the question: What is the nature of Christ’s Resurrection?
- Characteristics #1: Christ’s resurrection involved having a physical body.
- Point: There are some who deny that Christ was raised physically/bodily; that the resurrection; but is this description fit the Biblical data?
- Proof
- Jesus had physical feet that the disciples could grab unto in Matthew 28:9.
- Jesus had “hands” and “sides” that He showed His disciples in John 20:20 and John 20:27.
- Jesus had a physical body in order for Him to have hands and bread to give to two of His disciples in Luke 24:30.
- Peter gave an account that Jesus in His resurrected body was able to eat and drink in Acts 10:41.
- “See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”” (Luke 24:39)
- These are the words of Jesus Himself and He’s telling us about His resurrected Body.
- Jesus here tells His disciples to look at “My hands and My feet” showing He had a physical body that can be seen.
- Jesus said “touch Me” showing He had a physical body that can be touched.
- Jesus said “, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have” showing clearly that the resurrection is not just a spirit nor is He a ghost.
- Don’t miss the obvious: Since Jesus’ body physically resurrected that is why there is an empty tomb.
- Characteristics #2: Christ’s resurrection involved having a glorified body.
- Point: It isn’t merely a survival from death; Jesus body was transformed into a glorified body with the resurrection.
- Proof
- According to 1 Corinthians 15:42-44 the believers’ resurrected body will be “imperishable” (42), “in glory” (v.43) and “raised in power” (v.44).
- According to 1 Corinthians 15:53 the believers’ resurrected body will also be “”
- This is true of Jesus’ body as well since 1 Corinthians 15:20 and 1 Corinthians 15:23 stated that Jesus is “the first fruits” of those who will be resurrected.
- “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; 21 who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.” (Philippians 3:20-21)
- The focus here is Paul saying that believers will have a body transformed into a glorious body.
- Yet that body is conformed to be like Christ’s body which is described as “body of His glory” (21).
What are the implications of this for the Christian life?
- Christ’s resurrection is the first fruit of what will happen to believers after death as well; have you dwelled on that thought recently?
- Have you meditated on Christ’s glorious transformation with the Resurrection to such a point that it gives you hope this present side of eternity?
- Have you notice how you are aging? Have that made you think more about the blessed glorious hope for those who trusted in Christ that one day you will be resurrected with a glorified body?
- Has this hope motivate you to tell others the Good News?

The literal, physical resurrection of Jesus is simply the most significant event in human history. I would say that to fail to understand and believe that renders one not truly a Christian. Without it, our faith is useless, as Paul taught. With it, we always have hope. Yep, knowing this makes me want to share the Gospel for sure.
“The literal, physical resurrection of Jesus is simply the most significant event in human history. I would say that to fail to understand and believe that renders one not truly a Christian.” Response: I would agree, Amen!
What a blessed hope that we have! The truth of the resurrection of Christ fires me up to want to follow Him including in the area of sharing the Gospel! By the way I’m working on scheduling guest posts right now…including yours!
If that doesn’t excite us…nothing will!
Good stuff… thanks!
Good lesson! It’s good to emphasize the truth of Jesus’ resurrected physical body. I think we as believers mostly have in mind only a spiritual existence.
Amen! I think it is good to think about this lest we fall into the wrong assumption of thinking physical and biologically is necessarily evil. Practically in our day to day life it is important too since we need to realize why we sin therefore isn’t biology, hormones, etc., but because morally and spiritually we reject God, etc. I hope with the doctrines and truth we learn from Scripture we always draw it back home to application because #TheologyMatters since God’s Word matters, Amen?
RE: I hope with the doctrines and truth we learn from Scripture we always draw it back home to application
Amen! I love to horde knowledge without necessarily applying it, so a challenge and a refocus is beneficial for me.
SlimJim,
I think it is good to think about this lest we fall into the wrong assumption of thinking physical and biologically is necessarily evil.
There is the taint of Gnosticism in such thinking. So many false religions, past and present, have deep roots into the distant past religions of Medo/Persian dualism. Asceticism, literally buffeting one own body bloody, stems from dualism. Trance inducing mystical meditation is an effort to free the “untainted” spirit from the “tainted” physical flesh.
If your thinking biblical, your not thinking.
