My post Nathan Phillips problematic slander of the Covington Boys has went viral. A big part of that is people going on search engines looking up Nathan Phillips’ lies about his military experience. One of the best expose of Nathan Phillips is by Don Shipley here. Don Shipley was a career Navy SEAL and I must warn you his language is that of a…sailor.
But I saw another video in which Shipley exposes another guy that lied about being a Vietnam Vet and members of some special operations unit that has also generated a lot of publicity from the public.
Here’s the video:
It makes me mad to see people claim to be something with the military when they are not. Especially to justify crimes, have followers or get others to sympathize and give money. It is evil and wrong.
It also got me thinking about false teachers of the Bible. How they have some similar trait. You know: Blend with a little truth here but insert many big lies. Also the narcissism. They have incredible stories about themselves that are unverifiable. Often it is also stolen from other people’s lives. When people raise questions they have an overwhelming response of appeal to pity and other emotions as response to objective or biblical points being made.
By the way to be clear, I make a distinction between a pastor struggling to be holy versus those who are plain phony by what they do with their flaws: Go to Jesus, or cover it up and fabricate a whole world of lies, including false theology.
Many years ago I had a guy come to my church who was a “pastor.” He was in a program that was trying to turn prisoners to pastors once they got out. Which is not a wise idea biblically if you think about it. He got disqualified and I found him by providence and ministered to him at his lowest point of life. I gave him many chances. He’s also the worst hypocrite I have ever met and with him the question isn’t “What have you done?” but “What haven’t you done?” He was the most deceptive guy I ever dealt with and even after he left our church I still see police records of him being arrested for crimes.
When you uncover a lie he will tell more lie. He lied about the degrees he had (he had none, I contacted the schools), he will lie about his spouse (she contradicts him), he will lie about being faithful to his wife and his phone will ring with different girls number, he will lie about being sober (I will go see him when he’s detained), he will even lie about things that there’s no way he can get away because you can verify right then and there such as he knows Greek and Hebrew, he knows a lot about church history, etc.
Other famous false teachers and phony pastors also have a trail of deception, hubris and uncontrollable appetite for sins. We ought to be discerning. But what I learn from watching all these clips from Don Shipley is that the best thing you can ever do with these guys is expose them.
Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile [i]angelic majesties. 9 But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!” 10 But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are [j]destroyed. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay [k]they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. 12 These are the men who are [l]hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, [m]doubly dead, uprooted; 13 wild waves of the sea, casting up their own [n]shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the [o]black darkness has been reserved forever.
14 It was also about these men that Enoch, in the seventh generationfrom Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with [p]many thousands of His holy ones, 15 to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” 16 These are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; [q]they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage.
17 But you, beloved, ought to remember the words that were spoken beforehand by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, “In the last time there will be mockers, following after their own ungodly lusts.” 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, [r]worldly-minded, [s]devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting anxiously for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on some, who are doubting; 23 save others, snatching them out of the fire; and on some have mercy with fear, hating even the garment polluted by the flesh.
Jude 8-22
Good post with the scripture tie in. Glad to see this guy being exposed for who he really is.
Thanks for reading and the comment. It seems this last week we have a lot of fake guys claiming to be something with Marine elite units that people in the internet have been falling for. I’m surprised at the lack of discernment people have, both spiritually and in other areas, but I shouldn’t be right?
No, you shouldn’t be surprised 😲
Good comparison between the two. I’m just curious brother Jim, but why would you say an ex-con as a pastor is unBiblical? I would think God calls whom He calls. Some pretty illustrious people spent time in prison in the Bible. I know, they were for their faith basically, but nonetheless were technically ex-cons. Paul and Joseph come immediately to mind. I don’t really see anything in I Timothy or Titus on pastor qualifications that would really address that. Now, if your reference was to their “program” to turn prisoners into pastors, I am all the way with you, as programs don’t create pastors. God calls pastors. So, if that was the reference, then I apologize in advance if my comment seems contentious.
I’m not against ex-cons being pastors; I don’t think that background necessarily makes someone unqualified or disqualified to be a pastor. What I think is unwise and unbiblical is to directly commission someone exiting prison and make them into a pastor when they get out (I mean that literally). I think they still needed to be examined under the situation of freedom first, before they are going to be leading a congregation of people who are free. I know people can often be “good” prisoners but then when they get out they fall into doing the same lifestyle again and pattern of criminal or sinful before that they had before they were arrested. For this program I actually called the program leader. I called concerning the individual I mentioned in the post and he voluntarily told me the program has a lot of problem with the people they commissioned. I was surprised at how frank he was and later he told me he’s actually the vice president of their denomination and had to take over the program just a few weeks earlier because the director himself also has some issues. It seems they are plagued with the problem I noted from top to bottom. While I think the guys are sincere I think maturing pastors takes more time than a 2 year plan of workbooks. We must also keep in mind the trainer doesn’t get to see the guy’s life fully except for a short duration since the guy’s in prison. We wouldn’t do this in other areas of life such as having a correspondence course and then directly commission prisoners as military officers after they are done with their sentence, nor have prisoners do an accountant degree program to be a CPA when they get out, how much more so should we be better stewards of those who care for the spiritual and eternal fate of others. I hope that clarify my position?
Then we are in full agreement! And I meant no offense in asking. Thanks for the detailed response
Thanks!

Yankee Whiskey Bravo 😎
Snopes is trying hard to rehab him.
Snopes’ biases are also showing. Those guys have such an agenda!
Snopes lied; here’s Phillips claiming to be a Vietnam Vet: https://twitter.com/TheRedRight_You/status/1088655836170326016
Snopes explanation of Nathan Phillips’ facebook video claim is problematic, saying ” He doesn’t say what theater, though, nor does he state directly that he was in fact ‘in theater’ —” but in the context he was talking about the Vietnam War. “In theater” is a military slang to say you were in war zone. Whoever writes for Snopes here is ignorant but they still aren’t doing justice to the context of what he’s saying and the terminology he’s using.
Snopes also lie trying to cover up his claim of being a “Marine Recon Ranger” by saying “if he was using the term “recon ranger” to describe his post-military activities.” So there’s Marine recon rangers outside of the military? LOL.
Yup. I wanted to comment at Snopes. I seem to recall you could at one time. But you can’t now. Snopes is biased. Has always been.
Yes, the church became “soft” in exposing false teachers and their false doctrines.
I think that has led to the weaken state of the church we see today. Your post yesterday reviewing that Pentecostal author from the 50s was very telling how things have changed and how that pastor was more doctrinally grounded in his views than some today who prize themselves as doctrinally sound and theological.
Very true…and sad.
I’m glad you wrote that post, Slim.
Something I see in common with both false teachers and Nathan Phillips, they are always pointing to themselves. It’s all about them, all of the time. That’s a good red flag that something is not right.
Something else that always bothers me is credentialing. That’s where you try to back up whatever you are saying with credentials, like military service or a degree. Usually that means what you are saying cannot stand on it’s own, it’s so flimsy it must call in reinforcements and back up.
We have local guy who always makes me laugh, he’ll be helping to change a tire and say, “it’s okay I’m a engineer, I know what I’m doing.” Bit of amusing self depreciating humor because of course you can design great bridges but still have no experience changing tires. Those who must pull out their credentials are using trying to sell you something.
Excellent follow up to the other article. We have to be careful and aware. There are many who want to do nothing but to lead us astray.
Thanks for proclaim the truth and your strong stand for Jesus. Much appreciated.
Pastor Jim, I found the native american site of the Lakota. The lawyer for the tribe said that Nathan Phillips was talking about the North Dakota fiasco(my word) that He went to, etc. This lawer says he has been friends with Phillips for 20years. He said Phillips never said he was in a war. I don’t know but this thing is getting out of hand. Please check it out. The www. you gave led me to ads. Love in Christ Jesus. 🙂
Just because Phillips didn’t lie to a lawyer he knows of 20 years doesn’t mean he didn’t lie elsewhere. My first post quoted a new source where he said he’s a recon Ranger in the Marines which he did say. But Marines don’t have rangers. The video I shared is a guy who specialize in exposing fake veterans for years. It turn out Phillips was a refrigerator repairman in the Reserves and never went overseas from the record. Plus he left the Marines as a private. That’s a far cry from being this recon Ranger expert in warfare and pointman he makes himself out to be. I am a Marine veteran, a sgt. in two infantry BN. who have been to six countries in three continents and a tour in Iraq and I totally despise those who fake being some kind of extraordinary heroes when they are far from it. That and also his lies is heinous. Anyways that’s the summary of the video I sent from an expert going through his records and my personal reasons why I find his lies so repulsive. Have a blessed day!
I find his lies hateful also but like to see the other side too. TY for making this clear. I trust you with my heart. I just did not want to judge out of turn. I know we cannot judge the spiritual heart but are allowed to state when actions are wrong in our God’s eyes. Ty. :))

False teachers like fake veterans are caught up with their own arrogance. The more I learn about Nathan Phillips the more he turns out to be a loser. The news reported he tried to enter a Catholic church too day before with his drumming. He’s a big troll incarnate, a NPC pawn.

That video totally exposed how he’s a fraud.
What a lying dog Nathan Phillips is!
The video isn’t working
I can’t believe Youtube pulled that Dan Shipley’s account down. Leftists in Big Tech companies are getting more and more out of control
I’m really not surprised Snopes got it wrong; these fact checkers are lame and ideologically driven
