We continue with our blog’s “wee-kids Wednesdays” and this week’s review of children’s books aren’t Christian works but they are still something homeschool kids and parents would appreciate!
Geronimo Stilton. Geronimo Stilton Reporter #2: It’s MY Scoop!. New York, NY: Papercutz, June 4th 2019. 56 pp.

Having read a few Geronimo Stilton’s graphic novels to my kids the last few weeks from the publisher Papercutz I was pleasantly surprised to learn they now have a new series on Geronimo Stilton titled “Geronimo Stilton Reporter Graphic Novels Series 2 primary works.” It is different than the other series in that while the other series was more historical with time travel this present series focuses on the present or the contemporary time period of Geronimo’s own life time. As I read this story to my daughters they enjoyed it and laughed throughout Geronimo’s adventure.
In this story we see some familiar characters: There’s Geronimo the main character who is a mouse that is a newsreporter and his cousin Trap and sister Thea and nephew Benjamin. We see here that there’s a news service competitor cheating in lying and also spying on Geronimo to get the latest scoop. Geronimo’s gang is out to find out where the leak is coming from while at the same time protect what they know about the secret celebrity who will make a special surprise appearance in New Mouse City. The adventure is on!
While I did enjoy the story and it is clean and fun for the kids I did enjoy the more historically based Geronimo Stilton’s stories more than this present series. Also there were times in which my daughters asked about the artwork of characters looking differently than in the other series. Still overall I did enjoy the artwork and it wasn’t bad but sometimes the characters appeared differently according to my daughters. A fun read and a fun adventure.
NOTE: This book was provided to me free by Papercutz and Net Galley without any obligation for a positive review. All opinions offered above are mine unless otherwise stated or implied.
Geronimo Stilton. The Coliseum Con. New York, NY: Papercutz, November 24th 2009. 56 pp.
5 out of 5
Purchase: Amazon
This is the third graphic novel in the Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novel series published by Papercutz but it was the fourth volume I read to my daughters. This is another fun adentures of Geronimo Stilton and friends!
In this book they go back in time during the era of the Roman Empire to stop the Pirate Cats from changing in history. Along the way readers will learn more about the Roman empire specifically with the Coliseum and also the sewage system of the Roman Empire. I really really enjoyed the historical facts taught in the book and there’s a separate panel in this graphic novel for historical information as the plot unfolds. What an interesting and fun way to learn history!
Like other Geronimo Stilton’s work thus far I recommend it to kids and parents reading to their kids!
Geronimo Stilton. The Great Ice Age. New York, NY: Papercutz, November 24th 2009. 56 pp.
4 out of 5
Purchase: Amazon
This is the fifth graphic novel in the Geronimo Stilton Graphic Novel series. This is another fun adventures of Geronimo Stilton and friends published by Papercutz.
In this book Geronimo Stilton and his family and friends go way back in time, further in time than the other adventures thus far: They go back to the Ice Age! They are going back in time to stop the Pirate Cats from changing in history. Readers will learn about the wolly Mammoth and early human beings and how they lived and survived. This wasn’t necessarily my kids’ favorite adventure but it wasn’t bad either. Still I can recommend it to kids and parents reading to their kids for it being clean, fun and educational.
Consistency in character design is one of the more difficult disciplines to master in cartooning. 🙂
Wow thank you for that insight coming from you an artist yourself. Thank you for that insight!
No prob. Heh, it took me awhile to develop that consistency. I still have to watch it. On the other hand, even in real life photos, folks can seem to look different at different angles. That’s what makes this a difficult skill for caroonists to learn.
I meant cartoonists. Spelling is another thing I have to watch. I touch type, so I tend to check my writing several times as well.
My 9 year old is a big fan of Geronimo Stilton. We read the last two but haven’t read the first one. They have kept my kids entertained.
Thanks for sharing this review SlimJim. It does help having the same illustrator for a book series 😉
Thanks for the Geronimo Stilton reviews! The one about the Coliseum sound the best to me. I’ve read that the building of the Coliseum was funded in part by the spoils of the First Jewish–Roman War (66–73 AD) in which the Temple in Jerusalem was obliterated as Jesus had foretold.
Wow that is crazy to think about the historical connections of seperate events! This is one aspect of what I love about history, seeing connections, Amen?
Yeah, it’s really neat to see the interconnectedness of historical events. Speaking of that, I just finished listening to the fourth Ruth sermon (all were excellent!). I appreciated how the speaker spoke about how the very unlikely and improbable romance of Ruth and Boaz led eventually to the birth of Jesus, testifying to God’s sovereignty and providence. I’m very grateful you posted those sermons. Such a blessing throughout this week! What wonderful typology throughout of God’s love for us.
