This is from my daily Greek exercise of sight reading a few weeks ago, courtesy of Vincent S Artale Jr.
Our text is from the Greek translation of Matthew 4:19. Here is my translation:
“καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Δεῦτε ὀπίσω μου, καὶ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς ἁλιεῖς ἀνθρώπων. ”
And He *said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Here are some observations:
- Verse 18 gives us the context of what’s going on: “Now as Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.“
- Jesus here is speaking to Simon and Andrew.
- There is a command given here: “Follow Me”
- This is not a command only for Simon and Andrew.
- In Matthew 8:22 we see Jesus said to a group of disciples: “But Jesus *said to him, ‘Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead.’“
- In Matthew 9:9 Jesus said “Follow Me” to Matthew.
- This is a command for us believers as well.
- What specifically does following Jesus entails? The second half of the verse mention: “and I will make you fishers of men.”
- Andrew and Peter were fishermen as their trade when Jesus encountered them.
- Here Jesus is saying they will be like fishermen still but with men.
- Specifically they will be “Catching” men for God.
- This entail evangelism and discipling followers of God.
- The call to follow Jesus in general is not easy. Both Matthew 10:38 and 16:24 talk about carrying the Cross as part of following Jesus.
- Yet whenever God command us something He also gives us the grace to be able to obey.
- Consider also the salvation that God gives us to not as reward, but a free gift. That alone should already motivate us to follow Him!
- But it doesn’t end there! In Matthew 19:21 Jesus also commanded listeners to “follow Me.” But Jesus adds an incentive: “you will have treasure in heaven.” There will be reward for faithfulness.
Application:
- Have you realize that following Jesus comes with a cost?
- Have you decided to follow Jesus to the point that you will be willing to sacrifice things to follow Him?
- Have you shared the Gospel to others recently? Who was the last person you shared Jesus to? Take the time right now to pray for the person.
- Are you involved with discipling others? If not, pray about it. If you are, pray for the person you are discipling.
- In what other ways recently have you carried your cross?
- Meditate on God wanting to reward us for obedience. Let that move you to loving obedience of God.
Only as we follow Jesus, being disciples by Him are we able to evangelize others. Far too often this is preached with an evangelism lens rather than a discipleship lens. We cannot fish if we do not have the proper tools. Discipleship and evangelism must exist together. Blessings, Mandy
Many I totally agree with your point: “Discipleship and evangelism must exist together. ” Also one being a disciple of Christ makes our evangelism and witnessing more compelling. When do you begin your PhD?
Well said! I begin August 26. How may I pray for you, your family and ministry?!
Aww thanks for asking: Will you be able to pray for certain people I am praying and ministering to who are struggling with their faith with God? I would appreciate it very much! How can I pray for you Mandy?
I will pray for those certain people. Please pray for wisdom and discernment in ALL areas of life! Thank you SO much Jim!!
Thank you for this good exhortation regarding evangelization and discipleship!
You’re welcome! Evangelism and discipleship is important. Probably one of the most important thing we can do in our lifetime, that leaves an impact for eternity. Thinking about it makes me think what a privilege God has given us the opportunity to share the Gospel and be involved with others’ lives in growing for Jesus.
Re: Sting. I hate bee sting! The only time I got stung by one, it affected me for a whole week. It was when I was in the Marines. I’ve had other more serious injuries when I was in, including in Iraq where I was thrown out of a rolling Humvee and passing out…oh the back pain! But none more annoying that the pain from a bee sting!
RE: Bee sting 🐝
Yeah, it’s almost been a week for me. Felt better today and did my walking at work. Maybe it won’t itch tonight.
Fine lesson.:)
Thanks! I just prayed God would use you and me to do God’s work of planting seeds and being fishers of men, both online and also offline in our life. Thanks for your encouragement, they mean a lot!
Love in Christ.:)
Jim, thank you again, I praise the Lord for your example and your teaching. Blessings.
“Therefore go and make disciples….”, sharing the gospel doesn’t end there.
Excellent teaching pastor Jim.
Thank you.
Amen, it doesn’t end with just sharing the Gospel, it is also discipleship. Is there any good church near where you are moving to?
It seems that the Lord has put a stop to me moving far away to the country . I continue to seek His guidance and plan for my life .
Anything specific I can pray for you and your ministry Pastor Jim ?
Wow is this new development something you preferred, to be not moved far away right? Pray for my ministry, ministering to those who are depressed or going through things. Pray that I have wisdom and the right words of comfort while pointing towards Christ…
I will be praying for you and your ministry Pastor Jim . Thank you for letting me know.
Moving far away isolated from my family friends and church I believe is not in God’s plan for my life right now. God has been stopping our house purchase in the country in amazing ways for almost 8 months .
My arm injury and going to NZ for a week God used to turn things around , Don’t know the outcome yet , Walking by faith and trusting God .
Blessings
Thanks! Great lesson. 😊
