Why do I read my Bible? And why should you read the Bible? Here are 4 “A”‘s of the use of Scripture:
- I read my Bible first to ADORE God. It is done to worship God; I read it first to find something to say “Wow, God, you are amazing!” All of life is worship of God and if I don’t read my Bible to first worship and adore the One who is Amazing, well I’m read the Bible wrongly.
- I read my Bible secondly to APPROPRIATE God’s grace to my life. I sin and I need to be forgiven by God. God’s Word reveals the Gospel of how I can be forgiven of my sins. Through God’s Word I see Christ and also His work; the truth about Christ’s person and work is what I need to believe in order to be forgiven of my sins! I read the Word to appropriate God’s grace in my life both to save me and also to sanctify me!
- I read my Bible to APPLY God’s requirement to my life. Yes God wants me to adore Him in worship and also to appropriate God’s grace to my life. But in adoring God and appropriating His grace to my life that fuels me to live my life in a way that please Him. Therefore I search the Scriptures to live in a way of what He wants and require of me. In other words I make it my goal to apply God’s Word to all areas of my life.
- I read my Bible also as an APOLOGETIC of God’s truth. People attack the Bible. I need to know it to defend it and also refute misinterpretation and misrepresentation of God’s Word by those in counterfeit Christianity and also with those who outright dismiss Scripture as God’s Word. I need to respond with accurate handling of God’s Word. And the best way to do that is to study God’s Word itself. I also read God’s Word to experience the self-evidencing nature of God’s Word and also to adore God for the many prophecies and Messianic Prophecies that have been fulfilled, testifying God’s Word is true.
Great summary!
Thanks! Which one of these 4 is your strength and which one can you pursue more as your motivation for reading Scripture?
#4.
Nicely done
Thanks! Hope you get some rest today?
Little bit thanks
Excellent! Thank you. When we are tempted to open our Bibles and read in a perfunctory fashion, as part of a daily check list, let’s remember the 4 “A”s.
I’m going to write these “a” words on the inside of my Bible 👍🏻🙏🏻😁
Yes, a simple reminder like that can be quite helpful.
Amen it’s a good heart check for sure. Just got done with a conference was wondering if you can pray for my studies for Sunday, been a busy weekend
Was out and about last night (unusual for me) so just read this and am praying the Lord bless your sermon!

“I red my Bible…”
May I add another “A” word?
AMEN!!!
Aww amen! Thanks for the reblog and all the good comments!
Amen, brother!
Love it! Number 4 is a great point! I want to be ready and know what is truth when I’m presented with something that doesn’t match up with Scripture. It’s important to know what God says and how to recognize truth.
This is very well done.
I try to read my Bible daily. These four A’s reinforce why I should stay disciplined in reading God’s Word.
It was personally sanctifying writing these out! Gotta keep reading the Word! Of these four points which one is your strength and largest motivation to read the Bible?
I probably focus on 1, 2, and 3. The 4th “A” is probably my weakest one. In reality, all four related. Each one builds up on the previous one.

I do read Scripture every day, and because I love them so very much as my instruction for living. They have fed my spirit for many years.

I find this an excellent way to remember to study rightly. Ty.
I’m blessed to hear that. Got to read your comment just now after a long day involved with teaching at a Bible conference! Thanks for the encouragement, gotta drive home now and finish prep for Sunday sermon!
God’s speed.:)
This is excellent! Thank you.
Thanks and thank you for your comments on here! How did your Lord’s day go?
The Lord’s day went well.
God is worthy of our praise.
Thank you pastor Jim.
