The 3 Cs of Walking with God
Psalm 16
Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You. 2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” 3 As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, Nor will I take their names upon my lips. 5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me. 7 I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night. 8 I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. 10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. 11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.
Purpose: In this Psalm we shall see the three C’s of our relationship to God so that we walk with God today.
- We need to have COMMITMENT to God (v.1-4)
- We need to find CONTENTMENT in God (v.5-7)
- We need to have CONFIDENCE in God (v.8-11)
Introductory matters
- Hebrew verse 1 of Psalm 16 indicates that this is written by David: “A Mikhtam of David.”
- The author is clearly identified: “of David”
- What is a “Mikhtam?”
- According to William Barrick: “One of the more likely explanations was found in the old Greek translation of the Old Testament (the Septuagint) 250 years before Christ: “inscription.”[1]
- Jeremiah 2:22 uses a related word (nikhtam) is translated “stain” to express that something is indelible. Thus this is writing that is meant to be preserved.[2]
- Psalm 15 sets up God’s holy requirement to worship in God’s presence and Psalm 16 now shows us we need to trust in God and what trusting in God looks like.
We need to have COMMITMENT to God (1-4)
Passage: “Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You. 2 I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.” 3 As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, Nor will I take their names upon my lips.” (1-4)
Proof
- General principle stated: “Preserve me, O God, for I take refuge in You” (v.1)
- This is a prayer to God
- Note in light of what is to follow that in talking about finding refuge in God it entails trusting in God and being committed to Him.
- What does trusting in God and being committed to Him looks like? Psalm 16:1-4 gives us 4 S’s that describe our commitment to God.
- A commitment to God means submitting to God as your Lord (Master): “I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord.” (v.2)
- David here says that Yahweh (translated as LORD) is “my Lord.”
- “Lord” refers to the sovereignty and authority of God.[3]
- Notice David personalized this by saying “my” in “my Lord.”
- A commitment to God means relying on the sufficiency of God’s goodness rather than one’s own goodness: “I have no good besides You.” (v.2)
- A commitment to God means finding satisfaction in the people of God: “As for the saints who are in the earth, They are the majestic ones in whom is all my delight.” (v.3)
- A commitment to God means practicing separation from the enemies of God: “The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied; I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood, Nor will I take their names upon my lips.” (v.4)
- It begins first with statement about the consequences of those who choose other false god(s): “The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied” (4a)
- “will be multiplied” uses the same language as the first line of Genesis 3:16= “To the woman He said, “I will greatly multiply Your pain [a]in childbirth.” It thus reminds us the consequence of sinning.
- The specific consequence here of following a false god is increase “”
- David describes two ways in which he will not fellowship with God’s enemies:
- “I shall not pour out their drink offerings of blood” (4b)= Perhaps referring to not participating in their religious rites to false god(s).
- “Nor will I take their names upon my lips” (4c)= Not giving esteem attention to those who are to be enemies of God.
- It begins first with statement about the consequences of those who choose other false god(s): “The sorrows of those who have bartered for another god will be multiplied” (4a)
Practice
- Are you committed to God?
- Does your commitment to God show in your life with:
- A commitment to submit to God as your Lord (Master)?
- A commitment to rely on the sufficiency of God’s goodness rather than one’s own goodness?
- A commitment to find satisfaction in the people of God?
- A commitment to practicing separation from the enemies of God?
We need to find CONTENTMENT in God (5-7)
Passage: “5 The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot. 6 The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me. 7 I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night” (5-7)
Proof
- Be content with God more than His gift of things: “The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup; You support my lot.” (v.5)
- Most people look forward to receiving inheritance; yet David says “The Lord is the portion of my inheritance”
- Notice the verse says “The Lord is…my cup” and it is as if David is saying God is his food and drink.[6]
- In the last line David is content and thankful for God’s support.
- Be content with God directing your life: “ The lines have fallen to me in pleasant places; Indeed, my heritage is beautiful to me” (v.6)
- David is content with God giving him “pleasant places.”
- The reference to measuring “lines” and “heritage” is often used to in connection with dividing up the land of Canaan among the tribes of Israel.[7]
- David is thankful for good property from God; still though don’t forget the previous verse that God has to be these things and more than these things!
- How? Be content with God’s Word: “I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; Indeed, my mind instructs me in the night” (v.7)
- “counseled” when we speak of God giving it is associated elsewhere in the Psalms with Scripture:
- “my mind instructs me in the night” literally in the Hebrew is “even in the night times my kidneys instruct me” and kidneys refer to one’s deepest thoughts and conscience.[10]
Practice
- If God is like your food and drink, do you then find strength and refreshment from God?
- Are you content with God more than His gift of things?
- Be content with God guiding your life! It will be different than others and there’s no room for envy!
- Do you read God’s Word to find contentment in God?
We need to find CONFIDENCE in God (8-11)
Passage: “I have set the Lord continually before me; Because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will dwell securely. 10 For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol; Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay. 11 You will make known to me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” (8-11)
Proof
- This passage describes so much confidence in God (“I will not be shaken” in v.9) that one then experience joy in the Lord (“my heart is glad” in v.9; “In Your presence is fullness of joy; In Your right hand there are pleasures forever.” in v.11)
- This means confidence in God even for salvation as verse 10 states “For You will not abandon my soul to Sheol”
- Yet what is the basis for David’s confidence in God to even save him from hell/Sheol? Verse 10b states “Nor will You allow Your Holy One to undergo decay”
- Notice v.10b talks about someone different than the rest of the Psalm.[11]
- Rest of the Psalm is about David in the first person:
- “my inheritance” (5)
- “my cup” (5)
- “my lot.” (5)
- “me”(8)
- “my right hand”(8)
- “my heart”(9)
- “My flesh”(9)
- But here is a third person description: “Your Holy One” (10b)
- Rest of the Psalm is about David in the first person:
- Who is God’s “Holy One” (v.10b)?
- We can have confidence in God even with salvation because of God’s promise even to Jesus!
Practice
- Struggle to trust and have confidence in God? Look to Jesus!
- Study God’s promise to Jesus! Study it to boost your confidence in God and His word!

Amen! This is a mighty study of God’s Word! God bless!
Thanks for observing that; how has your health been lately?
It has been pretty rough the last couple weeks. Intestinal issues and pain. I think it was a change in my multi vitamin. I stopped taking it and things are getting better now. I use all natural whole food based vitamins and it was from the same company, but it was a Men Over 40 multi vitamin. I figured since I turned 41 this summer I should start taking it, but my body didn’t like the change. Need to go back to the normal Men’s One Daily I had been taking. I can’t absorb nutrients properly due to the damage in my small intestine, so I take a variety of vitamins. I am praying for healing in my intestines and that everything is healthy in my colon too. I know God is bigger than this disease and He can do anything. Thanks for asking and I appreciate the prayers! God bless!
This is good stuff, brother, thank you for making this connection between the Psalm 16 and the New Testament!
Good study thanks.
You’re welcome! Working the shift tonight?
I am. 5 nights this week.
Thanks for this good lesson outline! Reading about the 3 Cs was a good way to start out my day.
Nice! This was a teaching that I taught on Tuesday night, a few hours ago. Glad to hear its a good way to start the day! Going to load up my sermons on Sermon audio and going to sleep!
Have a good sleep and good Wednesday!
Thank you, Jim. The alphabet is God’s gift to us. Blessings as you continue to use it for His glory. I am including link to your blog in my next post.
You’re welcome! Wow that’s nice of you to share this in your latest post! How are you doing?
Slowly settling down after being caught up in being eighty. The LORD IS GOOD! Blessings.

Hi Jim! Do you think covenant could be another “c”? God’s covenant will not abandon David to Sheol. God’s covenant protects His people. Curious as to your thoughts! I agree with your “3 Cs” and I am so thankful that joy is found in His Presence! Blessings, Mandy
Wow I like that! I feel the more I read the Psalms the more I see the Davidic Covenant explain the structure of the book so your point is dead on! You also added points that I didn’t develop as much from this Psalm, thanks sister! How’s school going?
Hi Jim! Glad to be of service! School is going! My two classes are centered around writing, research, teaching and learning. I will be glad when our studies focus on the Bible rather than theory (if that makes sense!). How are you doing? Praying for you and for those in your sphere of influence!
Oh, I enjoyed that study!
The 3 C’s were a blessing! Praise God thanks!
Pastor Jim, thank you for your careful and meaty study!
Reblogged this on Truth in Palmyra and commented:
Great lesson, brother Jimmy! Your use of alliteration reminds me of Adrian Rogers, one of my favorites!
Amen! Jim, thanks for pointing my spiritual compass on Psalms 15-16.
Great article Brother Jim and I especially love what you stated here: “Most people look forward to receiving inheritance; yet David says “The Lord is the portion of my inheritance” — I’ve seen several posts on Facebook that talk about what the Lord DOES for us, but rarely do I see posts about Loving Him for just WHO He is! I have learned, the more we truly find Contentment in His presence and intimacy alone, the more we appreciate (an underused word) Him for just Who He is rather than what He can give us!
On a side note, I truly thought I had you listed on my Page, “Blogs Followed” cause I have been following you for a while, but when I updated the page the other day, your site wasn’t listed. Sorry about that, but it has been corrected and Domain For Truth IS listed now.
God bless you brother! Be blessed richly!
Roland I’m truly to hear I made it on your listing! I just followed you on my WordPress feed. I’ll email you this weekend about the guest posts, does that work?
Sure Brother Jim, anytime.

Great read once again. Thank you brother. Would like to share: Note that Adonai is defined as “my LORD” as in LORD over man. But that, Adon is defined as Master of all creation. I found this very interesting. How was David referring to LORD as Master of all or LORD over him.

I really enjoy your alliteration of the passage.
Thanks Fr. Pius sj. I read your posts regularly. Thought I would be in touch. Quarantine is ideal time to do all that’s needed to be in constant contact. Thanks for the insightful n inspiring posts.
I would like to reach through my mail if possible… Or notification.

The alliteration is helpful
I love your 3 Cs!
I’m really enjoying your series on the Psalms. It’s very helpful to read and learn the word in a more organized manner.
Really intresting! I’m starting to get intrested in this question…
You appear to understand so much of this Psalm, such as you can write a e-book Commentary on it or something, if you expanded each point into a chapter. It will be a great read. I will certainly be back.
Wonderful Bible study outline! I need to work on contentment with God
What’s up?
I found this article very interesting…please read!
Do you remember the blockbuster hit film The Matrix that was released in 1999? You may not know this, but it has deep spiritual implications concerning the times we are living in and Bible prophecy.
It tells a story of how these “agents” are trying to turn us into machines. We are closer then ever before for this to become a reality when they cause us to receive an implantable microchip in our body during a time when physical money will be no more.
You may have seen on NBC news concerning the implantable RFID microchip that some people are getting put in their hand to make purchases, but did you know this microchip matches perfectly with prophecy in the Bible?
“He (the false prophet who deceives many by his miracles) causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name…
You also may have heard of the legendary number “666” that people have been speculating for possibly thousands of years on what it actually means. This article shares something I haven’t seen before, and I don’t think there could be any better explanation for what it means to calculate 666. This is no hoax. Very fascinating stuff!
…Here is wisdom. Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666″ (Revelation 13:16-18 NKJV).
GOD is sending out His end time warning:
“Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, “If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name” (Revelation 14:9-11).
In the Islamic religion they have man called the Mahdi who is known as their messiah of whom they are waiting to take the stage. There are many testimonies from people online who believe this man will be Barack Obama who is to be the biblical Antichrist based off dreams they have received. I myself have had strange dreams about him like no other person. So much so that I decided to share this information.
He came on stage claiming to be a Christian with no affiliation to the Muslim faith…
“In our lives, Michelle and I have been strengthened by our Christian faith. But there have been times where my faith has been questioned — by people who don’t know me — or they’ve said that I adhere to a different religion, as if that were somehow a bad thing,” – Barack Obama
…but was later revealed by his own family members that he indeed is a devout Muslim.
So what’s in the name? The meaning of someones name can say a lot about a person. God throughout history has given names to people that have a specific meaning tied to their lives. How about the name Barack Obama? Let us take a look at what may be hiding beneath the surface…
“And He (Jesus) said to them (His disciples), ‘I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven'” (Luke 10:18).
In the Hebrew language we can uncover the meaning behind the name Barack Obama.
Barack, also transliterated as Baraq, in Hebrew is: lightning
baraq – Biblical definition:
From Strongs H1299; lightning; by analogy a gleam; concretely a flashing sword: – bright, glitter (-ing, sword), lightning. (Strongs Hebrew word H1300 baraq baw-rawk’)
Barak ‘O’bamah, The use of bamah is used to refer to the “heights” of Heaven.
bamah – Biblical definition:
From an unused root (meaning to be high); an elevation: – height, high place, wave. (Strongs Hebrew word H1116 bamah baw-maw’)
The day following the election of Barack Obama (11/04/08), the winning pick 3 lotto numbers in Illinois (Obama’s home state) for 11/5/08 were 666.
Obama was a U.S. senator for Illinois, and his zip code was 60606.
Seek Jesus while He may be found…repent, confess and forsake your sins and trust in the savior! Jesus says we must be born again by His Holy Spirit to enter the kingdom of God…God bless!
I am struggling as 2020 has become a darker and harder moment in my life than right now. Everything is wrong, nothing is going right in the world right now. Plus the shorter days and longer nights make it so much worse. So to the Scriptures I turn to read and study and Psalm 16 struck me as encouraging so I look up online for any good study and found this was what I needed

In Psalm 16, King David encourages us to trust God above all other gods. All our benefits come from Yahweh. Why shouldn’t we focus all our love and devotion on the God of our Lord Jesus Christ? Verse 4: Say no to idols!
Eleven verses of pure bliss
Seems reading the Bible is like painting. A big brush can also help you get the best look and feel for your particular waves while they’re in motion, so if you need a bigger wave you should buy a bigger brush. But a smaller brush gets all the details. And the details of God’s Word is so beautiful and encouraging
Hey! I know this is somewhat off-topic but I needed to ask. Is Psalm 16 messianic prophecy?
I am intrigued with this Poetry, we have to write a response paper for my literature summer class
