Someone asked the following: “How and in what ways is the Bible self attesting and self authenticating? I want to understand this doctrine better.”
Here’s my quick thoughts:
1. Reading God’s Directly should attests to us immediately it is the Word of God. If you don’t see it’s God’s Word it might be you need to read more of it to see it’s divine character being revealed.
2. God’s Word is objectively self-authenticating itself as God’s Word but there’s also the Spirit’s attestation it’s God’s Word through the ministry of conviction (use of its Law), proclaiming the Gospel (Content of Scripture) and regenerating believers to have a heart to see Scripture as it is given the noetic effect of sins, etc. The rest below will focus on the objective self-attestation of Scripture itself.
3. Scripture as the highest authority doesn’t appeal to another greater authority to be authoritative; it is authorizing itself as authoritative and authoritative to authenticate its the Word of God.
4. I think Scripture self-attestation to itself being God’s Word isn’t a flat “it’s just God’s Word because I (believer) say it is.” I think it is self-attesting and there’s evidential value within itself (that is, its self-evidencing) because of its unity of the books in its canon being about Christ from Old to New. It’s incredible how vasts the amount of casts that author the Scripture in many places, time and occupation and it’s marvelous unity. It’s not an accidental property of being united but it’s telos is Christ and the Gospel!
5. Likewise I think Scripture is self-evidencing in its Messianic prophecies. My approach as a Presuppositionalist here is different than a general evidentialist with all the points above but also because I stress the OT is part of our philosophy of evidence that interpret what Christ was doing in His first advent, etc.
6. Knowing the nature of Scripture as self-attesting shapes our apologetics’ methodology. Since the nature of a self-attesting Scripture is that Scripture is self-authorizing, opposing Scripture means opposing its because one has another conflicting ultimate authority. The apologist pushes the critic to reveal his or her authority and show the problems with it by way of an internal critique.
My favorite evidence for the Bible actually being from God is from fulfilled prophecies. It’s just great
Yeah! Same here! That might be a neat series on your blog in the near future; what do you think? =)
Oh. That could be a great idea. I’m pretty sure my youth group would love that too. After my series through John I might end up doing a series on that.
Good post🎼🎼😇
Thanks for this good post! Yup, as a young Christian it was so exciting to initially read through the entire Bible and discover through the Holy Spirit these self-authenticating qualities of Scripture. As we grow in the Lord and continue to read the Bible, these qualities are further unfolding to us.
That’s a good point about how we see this character in Scripture more the more we spiritually grow as a believer! How’s the weather?
Sunny and high of 63 today! What’s it doing in SoCal?
Excellent insight. Thanks for putting this together. Very helpful.
Love this: “The apologist pushes the critic to reveal his or her authority and show the problems with it by way of an internal critique.”
I agree with all the points, Jim! The Bible is GOD’s hand that is cited by no other than GOD Himself and its content changes a person by work of GOD. The omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient GOD insures the integrity of the Bible that no earthly power can even ruin/tarnish.
Amen I like how you brought the attributes of God to bear as the doctrinal foundation for the integrity and perseveration of God’s Word! It’s true. The work of God through His Word in our lives is so amazing, amen?
True, Jim, it contains GOD’s own words, the creator of the big wide universe will surely insure its integrity. Amen, Jim! Yes, it is amazing, especially if we compare what was our life back then against the current one i.e. how we sense that the HOLY SPIRIT is convicting us if we sinned, more than the thing called “conscience”. Although there is this difference (in this “battle for the soul”) but still it is a work in progress and we are always in need of our Lord and Savior (because we are imperfect creatures).
Excellent.
Thanks! I hope you are enjoying your new computer
I am, thank you.:)
Reblogged this on Talmidimblogging.
This is an excellent presentation pastor Jim
Fulfilled prophecy and some of the concepts taught in the Bible confirm that this book was not authored by man.
Amen! There is something awesome about God’s Word! How’s your Lord’s Day going?
I am having a very tranquil Lord’s Day.
Blessings for your Lord’s Day Pastor Jim,. Always keeping your ministry in prayer.🙏
“I stress the OT is part of our philosophy of evidence that interpret what Christ was doing in His first advent, etc.” Amen!
And Amen! I know you are the OT gal! Have a blessed Lord’s Day tomorrow, and my your service have some kind of wonderful reference to the Old Testament!
Thank you! How are you and your peeps doing?!
As YOU know Pastor, the more you read it and even study it, the more you see the depth of its treasures and character. It shows us God’s Character and Nature for sure, but it truly digs deep into man’s heart and anyone who is truthful with themselves will see the Bible is “right on target” when it comes to man’s nature!
Great job and word here Pastor. I loved the way you laid it out. God Bless!
