For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: When was the woman who touched Jesus’s robe cured?
Here are the two answers which the skeptic believes indicate a Bible contradiction:
She was cured the instant she touched Jesus’s robe.
“‘A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse— 27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.” 29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction.” (Mark 5:25-29)
“‘And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, 44 came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You.”” (Luke 8:43-45)
She was cured within an hour after touching Jesus’s robe.
“‘And a woman who had been suffering from a hemorrhage for twelve years, came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak; 21 for she was saying to herself, “If I only touch His garment, I will get well.” 22 But Jesus turning and seeing her said, “Daughter, take courage; your faith has made you well.” At once the woman was made well.’” (Matthew 9:20-22)
(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)
Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:
- When dealing with skeptics’ claim of Bible contradictions it seems one can never be reminded enough of what exactly is a contradiction. A contradiction occurs when two or more claims conflict with one another so that they cannot simultaneously be true in the same sense and at the same time. To put it another way, a Bible contradiction exists when there are claims within the Bible that are mutually exclusive in the same sense and at the same time.
- One should be skeptical of whether this is a Bible contradiction given the Skeptic Annotated Bible’s track record of inaccurately handling the Bible. See the many examples of their error which we have responded to in this post: Collection of Posts Responding to Bible Contradictions. Of course that does not take away the need to respond to this claim of a contradiction, which is what the remainder of this post will do. But this observation should caution us to slow down and look more closely at the passages cited by the Skeptic Annotated Bible to see if they interpreted the passages properly to support their conclusion that it is a Bible contradiction.
- The skeptic tries to pit Mark 5:25-29 and Luke 8:43-45 as affirming the claim “The woman was cured the instant she touched Jesus’s robe” against Matthew 9:20-22 as affirming “The woman was cured within an hour after touching Jesus’ robe.”
- Just by taking the skeptics’ claims at face value we already don’t see a necessary contradiction. Let’s say those verses do teach “The woman was cured the instant she touched Jesus’s robe” and also Matthew 9:20-22 do teach that “The woman was cured within an hour after touching Jesus’ robe.” Technically if she was healed instantly no doubt she would be healed within the duration of that hour. It’s not a contradiction.
- We must look at both verses in its context to see if the skeptic cited it properly.
- The skeptic’s accurately cited both Mark 5:25-29 and Luke 8:43-45 as affirming the claim “The woman was cured the instant she touched Jesus’s robe.”
- Mark 5:29 mentioned the term “Immediately” to described what happened: “the flow of her blood was dried up.” So we this passage definitely affirm the woman was cured instantly.
- Luke 8:44 mentioned the term “Immediately” to described what happened: “her hemorrhage stopped.” So we this passage definitely affirm the woman was cured instantly.
- The skeptic did accurately cited Matthew 9:20-22 as affirming “The woman was cured within an hour after touching Jesus’ robe.” However there needs to be some nuanced as observed from the Greek grammar of the passage.
- What the NASB translated as “At once the woman was made well” is also literally translated in the footnote as “from that hour.”
- But we must then ask what does the Greek word for “hour” means.
- The Greek word for “hour” is ὥρα. It can have more than one meaning besides a literal hour of sixty minutes. While it refer to literal sixty minutes hour as the most frequent use of the term in the New Testament (84 times), nevertheless it can also mean a moment, time , or while.
- It seems in the Greek the combination of the relative pronoun “that” with “hour” actually refer to the idea of instant rather than sometime during the range of a sixty minute hour. For example in Mark 13:11 the phrase “that hour” occur there in which Jesus taught His disciples that when we are persecuted the Spirit will help them speak the right thing; what is the result? They speak within that hour. I don’t think its teaching us that almost an hour later you when someone ask you a question you finally know what to say to those persecuting you; rather the better sense is that “that hour” in the Greek can literally mean at that moment instantly since Mark 13:11 is hinting at a spiritual ability God has given to respond amazingly.
- So if “that hour” is better understood as “instant” than we don’t have a Bible contradiction.
- For those who think they can dismiss point 7 about the Greek term “hour” can have a meaning of something different than a sixty minute hour, think of how even in the English language “hour” doesn’t always mean a literal sixty minute time period. People talk about Great Britain in World War fighting the Nazis as their finest hour. In fact Church even gave a speech and said “Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, “This was their finest hour.”” But he doesn’t mean the war is finished in sixty minutes as if World War Two is just an hour long documentary or movie. Likewise the Greek word for hour can have more meaning than a sixty minute time unit.
- There is no contradiction here.
- We shouldn’t miss that worldviews are at play even with the skeptic’s objection to Christianity. The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview. […] When was the woman who touched Jesus’s robe cured? […]
Thanks for your faithfulness in providing this great resource. Blessings.
Thanks for carefully examining another of Steve/Stephen Wells’ cherry-picked contradictions! I appreciate the effort that you’re putting into this important series. Just a heads up; you’ll want to replace the quote for Matthew 9:20-22 as what’s showing is a re-paste of Luke 8:43-45.
I need to fix that. Last night I was falling asleep on the keyboard and usher a lot of will power to finish it so I won’t be surprised if there’s typos. Answering your question our Sunday went well, had long time online since we also had a servants meeting with members to get things done. Sounds like you had a fun Sunday! So many lakes near you it seems and historically rich ones! Do you like your burgers in any certain ways?
RE: Lakes, rivers, canals, etc.
We do have a lot of various bodies of water and waterways near us, but they weren’t developed properly. Very poor community planning. 99.9% of land abutting the water is privately owned and there’s very little recreational development (parks, hotels, restaurants). Very short-sighted and with the area economy now shot the opportunity is gone.
RE: burgers
Order mine the same way every time: medium with Rochester meat hot sauce and chopped onions. My 2nd choice would be with lettuce, tomato, and blue cheese dressing slobbered on the bun. How do you like your burger?
Instantaneous or within an hour or 2 minutes after really doesn’t matter, the primary take is, the woman was cured. You are right, Jim, worldview is at play.
Yeah I agree with you it’s nit picky in a way that’s not very rational. And also it shows that they don’t know the biblical languages which would really be helpful if they are going to sell books of “Bible contradictions.” This is number 145 of alleged Bible contradictions I have refuted weekly, when I reach 150 I’m going to do a special round up posts and have a break that week from writing a new one. Going to yesterday’s comment you got to watch a Superhero movie, which one did you get to watch???
Jim, you can actually write a book compiling all your write-ups/articles on “countering ill-researched and baseless ‘alleged’ Bible contradictions”. The compilation itself is a good clarificatory resource for those who read the Bible and are confused in some verses. I watch TV episodes mostly from DC or CW like Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Titans, Doom Patrol and yesterday I watched Stargirl, a modern take on Justice Society of America.
A radio station has some giveaways when a popular song is played at the noon hour. Listening in you discover instantly at noon its the song that you were waiting for. Would anyone accuse the radio station of a contradiction? I don’t think so. Yet the atheist says stupid things like this.
The quote from Churchill is a good one to rebut the skeptic. Its a moving quote historically too!
Great job with this!
Thanks! How did your Lord’s Day go yesterday?
It was a nice day with Nathan, my dog and my folks. We went to my dad’s house to swim and eat dinner. I am really thankful, my folks are divorced but are able to hangout with each other without issues! How was your day? How are things in your town? I am starting to wonder if we are going to shut down again (I think my area would not respond well if that were to happen).
Why do the people rage?
A good question from Psalm 2 indeed! And its interesting to see how God’s Word answer and refutes the skeptics themselves with their attempt to attack it. God’s Word is powerful and true Amen Maw Maw?
True, my Grand.
[…] Jim […]
The skeptic is clutching at straws to make his ridiculous claim.
Thank you pastor Jim for your faithfulness to God’s Holy Word.
Aww thanks for that encouraging comment! This is my 145th contradiction refuted, by the grace of God. Also by the grace of God I hope to write more! It seems there’s a small stream of people googling for answer that find our posts and I hope they can plant seeds. Praying for God to use our websites for His glory and to evangelize a lost and dying world! Need to do that more In a world of Corona Virus amen?
Amén !’
Your ministry is on our prayer list .
As we were sharing in our prayer group yesterday we were hoping that one day we will hear Jesus say :
“Well done good and faithful servant ”
I pray for opportunities is our crazy world to reach those that God is calling .
Blessings to you
Reblogged this on WALKING BY FAITH.
Word!!! 🙌
Amen! How are you sister? Going to check out your blog in a bit.
Blessed!! You?!
My children purchased a hummingbird feeder for me a few years ago and I’m just now able to enjoy it! We have been blessed to have a wrap around porch on our home out in the country 🙏🏻 I was sitting on the porch swing after a job yesterday afternoon alone and was blessed to observe 13 hummingbirds! With the Covid flying around there’s not much else to do 😂
The house we live in is over 120 years old-it was across the street from where it is now. My husband and much of his family was raised here (some were born in the house too oh and “waked” after their passing)-His family was going to burn it down! At the time we had 5 children and had outgrown our 3 bedroom ranch. So we were told we could have the house if we moved it across the street! So we did and it was one of the best moves we made 20 years ago! We had a set of twins a couple of years after we moved in!! And that, my brother, is a whole other story LOL
🙏🏻❤️
[…] 2.) Bible Contradiction? When was the woman who touched Jesus’s robe cured? […]
What the scripture wants us to know is that the woman was healed at the touch of Jesus cloak.
Jesus wants to see the person that touched Him so he can bless the ‘faith’ that was why He asked who touched me..
Amen
Interesting discussion! Scholars of the Greek and Hebrew languages bring renewed understanding from these ancient texts of Scripture.
this is why learning some Shakespeare in high school is helpful. From that hour is just an old English way to say right away, like “starting at that time.” YOu don’t even need to read Greek for this

It is hard to believe that a guy with a background in Mathematics could be so illogical in his “Skeptic Annotated Bible”. But I am seeing that every time I see you correct these.
Wow that’s incredible his background with mathmatics; it shows he can reason logically to some degree; but he won’t want to reason “reasonably” when it comes to reading the Bible; that is, his conclusion doesn’t follow from the Bible’s propositions, nor does he really apply the law of non-contradiction well! Blessings to you James, what’s the weather like in your neck of the wood, more cold and cold wind?
Thank you for sharing this information. I needed an article to explain this and yours helped
The real contradiction is when did this occur chronologically?
In Matthew, it says Jairus came to Jesus when he was talking to John about fasting.
Matthew 9:18: “While he was saying this…”
But in Mark and Luke, it says Jairus came to Jesus after he healed a demon possessed man, after returning from sailing to Gerasenes. In both Mark and Luke, Jesus already had the conversation with John about fasting much earlier in the gospel.
So which is it? Did Jairus come while he was talking to John about fasting like in Matthew?
Or did Jairus come after jesus returned from healing the demon possessed man, like in Mark and Luke?
Keep in mind in Matthew, Jesus had already healed the demon possessed man a chapter earlier, before talking to John about fasting, but in Mark and Luke, its the opposite, jesus had already had the conversation with John about fasting before healing the demon possessed man.
