The Struggle of Thanking God
Selected Verse
Establish the need: Do you regularly thank God?
Purpose: Today we shall see three points concerning prayers of thanksgiving towards God so that we be daily thanking God starting today.
- We are commanded to thank God
- Struggles of thanking God
- Helps for thanking God
We are commanded to thank God
Proof
- Definition from RC Sproul: “Thanksgiving is an acknowledgement of God and His benefits”[1]
- Commanded in the Old Testament: “Oh give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.” (Psalm 107:1)
- This is a Psalm written on the occasion of God rescuing and redeeming God’s people.
- Here in this first verse of the Psalm there is an imperative to give thanks to God.
- Commanded in the Old Testament: “I will praise the name of God with song And magnify Him with thanksgiving.” (Psalm 69:30)= Note how we are to “magnify Him with thanksgiving”
- Commanded in the New Testament: “always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father” (Ephesians 5:20)
- Notice we are to give thanks to God for all things.
- This thanksgiving is directed towards God.
- When we thank God? The verse says always!
Practice
- Do you thank God?
- Do you lift His name High when you talk about Him and talk to Him in prayer?
Struggles of thanking God
Proof
- Pride: “Thus says the Lord, “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom, and let not the mighty man boast of his might, let not a rich man boast of his riches;” (Jeremiah 9:23)
- We see the danger of boasting.
- Of course boasting is driven by pride.
- What are negatives things to boast about? Three things mentioned:
- Wisdom: “Let not a wise man boast of his wisdom”
- Strength: “and let not the mighty man boast of his might”
- Riches: “let not a rich man boast of his riches”
- If one is prideful they are adoring themselves instead of God.
- We are anxious: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Philippians 4:6)
- Notice being anxious and be thankful to God are opposite in light of the Greek strong form of contrast translated as “”
- So we gather from this that thanksgiving will remove our anxiety but also anxiety can remove our thanksgiving.
- We complain
- Yet complaining is prohibited: “Do all things without grumbling or disputing;.” (Philippians 2:14)
- When we are too busy complaining we are too busy being negative, the opposite of being thankful to God.
- We are too busy enjoying life first; that’s the lesson with the story of Jesus healing the ten lepers in Luke 17:11-19.
- Unbelief: “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be.” (Romans 1:22)= Notice in people’s unbelief the root problem is not intellectual it is a will that does not want to thank and honor God.
Practice
- Which one of these roadblocks do you struggle with presently with thanking God in your prayer?
- Ask someone close to you which are your potential obstacles or a pattern of being an obstacle in your life.
Helps for thanking God
- Realize complaining is a sin; recall: “Do all things without grumbling or disputing;.” (Philippians 2:14)
- Easier said than done! But still, we must fight the problem at the level of watching out for our complaining heart!
- Still the following below will also help us to fight against complaining!
- Remember His benefits: “Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits.” (Psalm 103:2)
- Sit down regularly and intentionally to write down at least a list of ten things you are thankful for. Pray to God about it right now!
- Be on the alert to hear what people say to you that God has bless you with. Then thank God for His benefits!
- Singing to God is helpful: “I will give thanks to the Lord according to His righteousness And will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.” (Psalm 7:17)
- In this Psalm David is taking refugee in God even as he has enemies in his life.
- Yet in the end of this Psalm David mentioned about giving thanks to God.
- Note David says He sings to God.
- Sometimes when it is really hard and we have really difficult circumstances and enemies: Sing! Sing will propel us to go deeper in being thankful to God.
- Realize we are to give thanks despite all circumstances: “Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)
- Notice the verse states we are to give thanks to God in everything.
- That include tough and rough times.
- Ultimately we always have this to be thankful for: Jesus saving us from our sins!

ause of Christ!
I would consider myself a very thankful and appreciative person. However, I do complain A LOT. I will save this post and meditate on it frequently because as you said so nicely, thanksgiving and complaining can’t exist together. Complaining is sin for me because it keeps me focused on my circumstances/feelings etc rather than on God. I have heard it said that the prayer that changes everything is praise. May I thank God more and praise Him more. In doing so He will increase and I will decrease. Love and blessings to you and your family!!!
This is such a convicting scripture. “Do all things without grumbling or disputing;.” (Philippians 2:14)
Thanks for the great insight on how to be more thankful.
Thanks for this good outline on thanking God including the practical suggestions! If we spent less time complaining (inwardly and outwardly) and replaced that attitude with gratefulness to God, we would be a lot happier and contented.
I find that so true what you said. As a a pastor I realize I need to teach more on thanksgiving as many problems in life don’t go away but what needs to change is us, with our perspective. Praying for your day today, including health, steps and job search.
Thanks, brother! And I’m praying for you today for your ministry, family, and steps. I’m averaging only 5K steps/day the last 5 days. Gotta pick it up. How’s your day look?
Thanks, Jim! Adoration, Confession, and Thanksgiving, of the first 3 in ACTS, thanking GOD is relatively not so difficult to pray or utter at any given time. There are many things to thank for and count your blessings from GOD. It reminds me of a related verse: “in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” (ESV)
It has been ‘ingrained’ in me for a long time to be thankful for all things. Sometimes that is all I can say….Thank you Father. The Holy Spirit has to take it from there.
Thanks for the reminder to thank God.
Well, here I go, trying to reblog your post. It’ll probably just disappear into cyberspace; but I can only try.
It seems it didn’t go through. I do appreciate your effort brother. I also sometimes wonder if my comments even go through with your blog. Something makes me think the left leaning internet tech companies is causing your trouble on your blog. Just a speculation…I’m sure it crossed your mind
Well, this comment went through, at least.
I think it’s a WordPress problem that’s blocking my reblogs. I’ll have to address it, once I’m sure I’m not going to lose my internet access again.
Reblogged this on Lee Duigon.
Excellent.
Thanks for dropping by I hope you are dry from the rain!
Very little rain so far.:) That is La. for you.:)
I’ve been praying a lot more prayers of thanksgiving since realizing that most of the things I was asking God for were things He had already promised.
Wow that’s an encouraging example and practice. I can work on thanking God more! I suppose the practice of praying according to the Scripture leads to thanksgiving and praise, Glory to God when we pray according to His will!
Praying Scripture is exactly what I do. 🙂
Looking forward to the supplication part, Jim! I’ve learned a lot from your posts, in this regard, in my prayer, adding more adoration to GOD and knowing how to confess. Likewise, Jim, same sentiments and I appreciate our friendship in CHRIST. Let us continue our ministry and also encouraging others.
I teach my grandchildren to be grateful. Today things are expected even from God. When we learn to be grateful even in dire situations we have a different perspective. How can
How can we,begin our day without thanking God?
Thank you for this study outline on Thanking God Pastor Jim.
Enter his gates with Thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise His name” (Psalm 100:4).
Thank you for sharing that you taught your grandchild! How old is he?
My grandchildren range from 4 to almost 17.
Thank you Lord in Jesus name. Glory be to God
While it seems so natural to thank God, one must wonder why it is so easy to forget…
That is a great question! I think we get too caught up with ourselves as maybe the reason why…wow glad to see you back here again! How is your health brother???
Glad to be back, Jim. Hope you are doing well. Me… well the doc says I’m a bit anemic, so he’s given me an iron supplement, and my liver enzymes are up so he’s set me up for a sonogram. Later on, they’re giving me an EGD to make sure bleeding in my stomach isn’t causing the anemia. Personally, I think it’s the fact that my appetite has gone down due to some depression I’ve buried. I’m still quietly grieving my mom’s passing and feel that the numbness I experience is evidence that the pain is subconscious. Emotionally, I tend to be like a volcano and worry about all this surfacing.

Hi there just wanted to give you a quick comment. Someone said I am too happy. She says that like it’s a bad thing. Simple solution to being happy: being thankful to God for everything
So much talk of “rights” and “privileges” today, makes a generation ungrateful
So happy I got to be a part of my cousin’s wedding and got to see both after a year of lockdown. Thanking God right now but you’re right we need to thank God every day
The best teacher in understanding the scripture is the Holy Spirit…The Spirit helps not only with intellect and personal interpretation of the scripture but move us to be grateful and thankful
In light of yesterday I’m grateful for first responders

Thankful for this; : “Is it not wonderful news to know that salvation lies outside ourselves?”

There is no greater state than to get up from your knees knowing that God has forgiven every sin you’ve ever committed. —R.C. Sproul
