For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Which sons of David were born in Jerusalem?
Here are the three passage the skeptic believes indicate a Bible contradiction:
“Now these are the names of those who were born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 15 Ibhar, Elishua, Nepheg, Japhia, 16 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet.” (2 Samuel 5:14-16)
“These were born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan and Solomon, four, by Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel; 6 and Ibhar, Elishama, Eliphelet, 7 Nogah, Nepheg and Japhia, 8 Elishama, Eliada and Eliphelet, nine.” (1 Chronicles 3:5-8)
“Then David took more wives at Jerusalem, and David [a]became the father of more sons and daughters. 4 These are the names of the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, 5 Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, 6 Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, 7 Elishama, Beeliada and Eliphelet.” (1 Chronicles 14:3-7)
(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)
Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:
- When dealing with skeptics’ claim of Bible contradictions it seems one can never be reminded enough of what exactly is a contradiction. A contradiction occurs when two or more claims conflict with one another so that they cannot simultaneously be true in the same sense and at the same time. To put it another way, a Bible contradiction exists when there are claims within the Bible that are mutually exclusive in the same sense and at the same time.
- One should be skeptical of whether this is a Bible contradiction given the Skeptic Annotated Bible’s track record of inaccurately handling the Bible. See the many examples of their error which we have responded to in this post: Collection of Posts Responding to Bible Contradictions. Of course that does not take away the need to respond to this claim of a contradiction, which is what the remainder of this post will do. But this observation should caution us to slow down and look more closely at the passages cited by the Skeptic Annotated Bible to see if they interpreted the passages properly to support their conclusion that it is a Bible contradiction.
- The skeptic tries to pit 2 Samuel 5:14-16, 1 Chronicles 3:5-8 and 1 Chronicles 14:3-7 against each other with the listing of the children of David that was born in Jerusalem.
- The skeptic did properly interpreted all three passages as referring to David’s lineage is the topic at hand with 2 Samuel 5:14-16, 1 Chronicles 3:5-8 and 1 Chronicles 14:3-7. Note the reference to David in 2 Samuel 5:13, 1 Chronicles 3:1 and 1 Chronicles 14:3.
- Before looking at the names note how many names of children of David are mentioned as being born in Jerusalem. There are 11 names mentioned in 2 Samuel 5:14-16, 13 names in 1 Chronicles 3:5-8 and 13 names in 1 Chronicles 14:3-7. Formally the numbers of sons mentioned in these passages are not contradictory since none of these passages stated that these are the only sons born in Jerusalem.
- Similarly the names in these lists are not formally contradictory since none of the passages said these are the only names of the sons of David.
- Also in the context of 1 Chronicles 3:5-8, in the next verse in 1 Chronicles 3:9 it states “All these were the sons of David, besides the sons of the concubines; and Tamar was their sister.” Note how this verse explains that the lists of names in 1 Chronicles 3:5-8 is by no means exhaustive of all the sons that David had in Jerusalem.
- Don’t forget too that during ancient times children fatality happened a lot more frequent than our time. So some of the names being omitted might be because of this reason.
- Furthermore individuals can have more than one name or their names over the course of their lifetime. This is true during biblical times but its also true elsewhere in other society even before and after Biblical times. For an example in the Bible see our post “Bible Contradiction? What was the name of the tax collector who was called by Jesus?“
- Outside of the Bible we also see that if a historical account mention one person or one party and did not refer to another party and other individuals that doesn’t mean the first account says it is ONLY one party or one person, and it does not mean we have a contradiction with other account. See for example my posts on the Gold Medal at the Cambrian Patrol, the Louisiana Purchase, the Thanksgiving Story, and September 11th.
- Thus we don’t have a contradiction here.
- We shouldn’t miss that worldviews are at play even with the skeptic’s objection to Christianity. The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview. Check out our post “Skeptic Annotated Bible Author’s Self-Defeating Worldview.”
Interesting discussion! I must confess that I am familiar with the family roster of David’s offspring, other than Solomon.
Excellent rebuttal and analysis. Thanks for the insight.
Good points (5-10), Jim! There is no stopping these skeptics on digging even so remote ones, thus giving you more tasks.
Read your comment and did what you said. Going to be on a one day vacation with family today to celebrate my marriage anniversary. A friend of mine in the Island got the virus recently and thought of you. Hope you are safe and healthy
🥁🥁Happy Anniversary, Jim and Nancy! 📯📯 You both deserved the vacation. 👍 Which, Island…the Las Islas Pilipinas? We are the top in Southeast Asia…in terms of the number of infected. Today, rather yesterday (it is 12:10am here) there were 4,002 new cases. We reached 6K plus few days ago. Thank GOD,🙂 we are safe here and we buy provisions via online so less risks as long as proper protection and hygiene protocols are followed. Still stuck here for almost 5 months now. Some of them got it in the malls.
You would think even the skeptic would be too busy to try and make a “contradiction” with this one. I will confess, there are some that the Skeptic presents that are worth digging into and then there are ones like these where I think to myself, what a waste of time to correlate a “contradiction” with this. Jim, what you are doing is AMAZING and is NOT a waste of time, I am thankful for your efforts!
Thank you for reading this. Grateful for you reading and commenting on this. Personally I think this one is rather silly, like it’s a last minute thing Steve Wells tack on to his listing to make his list looks more intimidating with the number. I’m celebrating 10 year’s anniversary one day early by going to the beach for today, so I woke up earlier than normal at 7 when I went to sleep at 3:30 finishing this, it will be quite a day today lol. Hope you have a blessed day today Mandy!
Hey, I just thought to myself, “why is Jim awake already? He did not have enough sleep!” Enjoy your day with your family! Congrats on 10 years! Again, enjoy your day!!
I agree with your answer. Good assessment brother. In this climate where there’s a lot of lies on the internet Christians gotta lovely hammer away at attacks on God’s Word. This angel is so weak, an easily identifiable ploy.
Leave it to Stephen/Steve Wells to try to hang his hat on another either/or argument. Thanks for another thorough debunking!
Thanks for reading this! Wells’ ability to twists Scripture never cease to amaze me and the fallacious reasoning he commits in order to say something is a contradiction is rather embarrassing for someone who say he’s about “reason.” I’m walking at a bay and docking area with my kids right now and I’m at 4.3 K so far before 10:30 AM, happy for that. I imagine waking around Erie Canal must be nice and scenic and historic! It’s starting to heat up here what’s the weather like in NY?
Enjoy the walk! We’re at 86F right now. Comfortable in the shade. My steps will be limited today because of final prep. Will start painting tomorrow. I really enjoyed the excursions to the canal the two previous weeks. Will start that up again after I finish painting. I see you guys have some serious heat in store this weekend. Stay cool!
Amen. Thank you.
You’re welcome thanks for commenting on another answer to an attack of God’s Word. The Bible stands even as the skeptic falls into logical fallacies amen?
Amen.
The skeptic must’ve had a lot of time to waste to come up with this one.
Well done pastor Jim.
Hope you had a wonderful wedding anniversary.
Thanks for you warm wishes with our 10th wedding anniversary. The skeptic not only waste time but sadly they “waste” people’s lives with their accusations that there’s legitimate reasons to reject the Bible…I hope more people see through the charade and get saved. How did evangelism go?
Your posts on the subject is certainly a step towards reaching those that are rejecting the Bible.
Our Evangelism went well today. Although not many people stopped to chat because of COVID, we did give out many tracts. Thank you for your prayers. The team is encouraged knowing that a brother in the USA, is part of out ministry through prayer. May the Lord reward you.
[…] Which sons of David were born in Jerusalem? […]
Reblogged this on The Searchlight.
This attempt by the skeptic of conjuring a Bible contradiction is rather ridiculous. I looked online and this is number 201 on the Skeptic’s list, so its part of the original list of contradiction that was published in the Skeptic Annotated Bible. Others have pointed out the error. That means all these decades it has yet to be removed though it is a terrible example of a supposed contradiction. Why didn’t they remove it?? Agenda??

I feel the skeptics just threw something together last minute with this one, just to say “contradiction”
[…] Which sons of David were born in Jerusalem? […]
These atheists need to study some hermeneutics
The fact that that Bible is slandered so badly shows it is hated more than it is understood by these skeptics
I saw someone dismiss the link to your posts and said its just the justification of an apologist with apologist thinking. If they read this they will see you answered it with actual reasoning and laws of logic. The description is more fitting of the Twitter atheists!
Atheist in their own beliefs and presuppositions can’t even make sense of what they see, what they read and what they think and they want to come and say this is a contradiction? Their worldview actually try to say it doesn’t all matter. Total madness
Thank you for this answer, you have a lot of materials in your archives
