Note: This is the ninth installment in our series on biblical leadership.
A Godly Leader is Self-Discipline
Selected Verse
Establish the need: Do you struggle with self-discipline?
Purpose: Today we shall three points so that we would be self-disciplined both as a Christian and also as a godly leader.
- The importance of self-discipline
- The example of self-discipline
- How to cultivate self-discipline
Quick Comments about meaning of self-discipline
- The dictionary’s definition for self-discipline: “the ability to make yourself do things when you should, even if you do not want to do them.”[1]
- Here I will use the term discipline and self-control interchangeably with self-discipline.
The importance of self-discipline
Even if you are not a leader it is important to be self-discipline
- Godliness require self-discipline: “But stay away from worthless stories that are typical of old women. Rather, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness” (1 Timothy 4:7)
- Notice the second half of this verse mention about the disciplining oneself.
- The purpose of disciplining oneself is mentioned here as being for “godliness”
- Secondly, benefit for this life: “for bodily training is just slightly beneficial, but godliness is beneficial for all things, since it holds promise for the present life” (1 Timothy 4:8a)
- Earlier in 1 Timothy 4:7 Paul said discipline is important for godliness.
- Here Paul compares bodily discipline with discipline for godliness; Paul is honest to say “for bodily training is just slightly beneficial.”
- Yet with “slightly beneficial” is still beneficial!
- Still a holistic self-discipline driven by godliness “is beneficial for all things.”
- What does “all things” entail? Paul said things for “the present life”
- Thirdly, benefit for the life to come: “and also for the life to come” (1 Timothy 4:8b)= Discipline looks beyond the here and now and somehow there is benefit for the life after.
Why is it important for leaders? (3 Reasons)
- Reason 1: Self-control is a moral requirement of Godly leadership:
- “but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,” (Titus 1:8)
- Here is Paul’s list of what are the qualification for a church overseer (Titus 1:7).
- Notice one of the requirement is that a church leader have the virtue of being “self-controlled”
- “An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach,” (1 Timothy 3:2)
- Again here is Paul’s list of what are the qualification for a church overseer.
- Notice one of the requirement is that a church leader have the virtue of being “prudent,” can be translated by other version as “self-controlled.”
- This adjective comes from the root “Cosmos” which is the ordered world and thus it describes what is well arranged, moderate or modest (Kitchen, 126).
- Why is self-discipline important as a moral qualification for leadership? Discipline helps us to operate by principle rather than pleasure.[2] Thus we are not surprised to see it being a requirement in Scripture.
- “but hospitable, loving what is good, sensible, just, devout, self-controlled,” (Titus 1:8)
- Reason 2: If one lack self-discipline in controlling his own life, how can he control other matters outside of himself?
- Someone without self-control will be controlled and dominated by others and outside circumstances: “Like a city that is broken into and without walls Is a man who has no control over his spirit.” (Proverbs 25:28)
- In such an instance it is hard to lead well.
- Reason 3: Lack of self-discipline lead to disqualification of leadership
- John MacArthur said: “There is one snare that has probably caused the downfall of more leaders than any other hazard: a lack of personal discipline” [3]
- People fall from leadership because of Sex, Salary (money), Self-importance (pride).
- Yet before those failure often leaders first failed to be self-controlled and self-disciplined.
The example of self-discipline
- Negative example of David: “Then it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him and all Israel, and they brought destruction on the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David stayed in Jerusalem. 2 Now at evening time David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance. 3 So David sent servants and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers and [b]had her brought, and when she came to him, he slept with her; and when she had purified herself from her uncleanness, she returned to her house. 5 But the woman conceived; so she sent word and informed David, and said, “I am pregnant.” (2 Samuel 11:1-5)
- Notice the setting in verses 1-2 indicate David was not doing what he was supposed to do, which is the opposite of being self-discipline:
- The expectation was for David to be in battle: “it happened in the spring, at the time when kings go out to battle” (1a)
- Instead we see David being idle: “Now at evening time David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the king’s house” (2a)
- From this David now set himself up to face temptation: “, and from the roof he saw a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful in appearance” (v.2b)
- Notice the setting in verses 1-2 indicate David was not doing what he was supposed to do, which is the opposite of being self-discipline:
- David committed adultery (v.3-5) and eventually the murder of Uriah, the husband of Bathshedba.
- In 2 Samuel 12 God brings a prophet Nathan to confront David’s sin. David’s sin began with the problem of lack of self-discipline brought about negative consequences as a leader.
Positive example of Paul
- Discipline involves sacrifice and self-denial.
- Paul had right to be financially supported according to 1 Corinthians 9:1-15.[4]
- But he chose to forgo his right as seen in 1 Corinthians 9:12, 9:15.[5]
- So to make a living Paul became a tent maker: Acts 18:3.
- To do both ministry and another vocation require self-discipline.
- Paul was an example of self-discipline and sacrificial self-denial as a leader.
How to cultivate self-discipline
- Pray for self-discipline
- Self-discipline is something God gives you: 2 Timothy 1:7; Galatians 5:22.
- If this is true then pray to God to ask Him for self-discipline!
- Believe God will answer the prayer!
- But also make sure you are asking with the right motive (James 4:3).
- Do not say “I cannot” in regards to being self-discipline!
- Sometimes when we lack self-discipline it is because we struggle with the sins of laziness.
- Mediate on 1 Corinthians 10:13: “No temptation has overtaken you except something common to mankind; and God is faithful, so He will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.”
- The truth from the passage is that God always allow a way out of sins including the sins of being a sluggard.
- Meditate on that verse in order to give you hope!
- Stay focus on the Main Goal: “Brothers and sisters, I do not regard myself as having taken hold of it yet; but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 3:13-14)[6]
- Of course the main goal is to live for God.
- Paul here describes it as a race and focusing on going forward.
- When we keep “looking back” or looking at others instead of the goal of God’s calling on our lives we are going to get in trouble.
- Likewise in other areas of life we must focus on our goal.
- Put effort into what you are doing yet knowing God is the one working in you: “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me.” (1 Corinthians 15:10)
- Notice Paul labored.
- Paul even said he labored more than the other Apostles!
- Yet there was no room for pride since Paul knew it was God working in him: “yet not I, but the grace of God with me”
- As you pursue self-discipline to get things done set realistic achievable goals towards your big goals so you don’t be discouraged.
- Gersom Clark has a good point to add here: Make a list; this will be a helpful tool.
- Live simply: Get rid of distractions which can undermine self-discipline
- Set an alarm to discipline yourself in regards to your time.[7]

My work on self discipline is akin to the legendary painting of the Forth Rail Bridge…it is never finished!
Never heard of the painting before
The painting of the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland was reputed to be a continuous job that was never done.
I am only responding to the title of this post. I will comment more later on your lesson! Yesterday I started a 6 month spiritual goal to grow in the Lord in self-control/self-discipline. What an awesome and timely lesson. I am even more convicted for not being on zoom 😞😭. I can’t wait to read this!!! Love and blessings to you, Nancy and girls!
Wow that is coincidental…I mean providential! Wow would like to hear more of what you have planned for now I’m going to go to sleep but we did pray for your prayer requests! Gersom could attest to that!
Yes, Mandy, Jim did pray for you during the Bible Study!
Thank you both for your prayers! I wrote a spiritual goal yesterday at 7:15am EST stating, “11/17/2020-05/17/2021 to grow in self-control and self-discipline in the next six months. For God to help me to partner with Him, which is a MUST for me to grow in my time with Him, decrease foul language, decrease reading news headlines and increase time spent on studying and writing blogs, increase time spent in preparing Bible Study material for [my mentee]. To increase my physical fitness routine and increase eating healthier foods. Father God, this goal will NOT be possible without you! Lord, teach me, open me. I long to know You more! Amen and Amen.” The main verse for this goal is Prov 25:28 “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls” (ESV). I am under conviction. The world is being lulled by COVID and it is time for me to cut the spiritual and physical fat that is weighing me down. It is time that I dig into the Lord and His Word now more than ever. This will NOT be easy. I know that I will be attacked. Like Gersom (Kent) I too make lists, it helps me. I was praying this morning and asking God to show me where I lacked discipline yesterday. This may seem like an unachievable goal but my aim is progress. This isn’t just a six month goal, it is a lifestyle change. With the new COVID mandates that are coming to Pennsylvania on Friday, I need to have discipline and self-control to honor God. I really believe that in Gal 5:22-23 self-control is the last fruit mentioned because it is the hardest. Without self-control there is NO love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness. Jesus is the ultimate example in self-control. I want to be more like our Triune God manifesting His Fruit. I also know that without self-control/self-discipline I will look more like Mandy and less like Mandy-in-Christ. People now more than ever need to see people being/living in Christ and this will take hard work, it will require making intentional choices. The Christian life is a die to self life, not live for self. Father God, help us to exercise self-discipline and self-control. Help us to look like You and not like this world. Prepare us Lord to stand firm in You. Remove any excess fat that is distracting us and causing us to stumble. Lord God, thank You for choosing us! Lord God, for the person reading this who does not know Christ may You stir their heart for Jesus while there is still time. In Jesus’s Name I pray. Amen.
Wow Mandy thanks for sharing that. It seems the providence increases with more details especially with your reference to Proverbs 25:28 that you mentioned. Very spiritually passionate comment! I want to pray for all of us…
Dear Lord, thank you for allowing us to use WordPress as a platform. Help us Lord to be even more disciplined in these days where a lot of falsehood and evil reign both online and offline. Help Mandy and Kent and I and everyone else who are believers on WordPress to be more self-disciplined and more productive in being a light to a lost and dying world. We can only be self-disciplined by your sanctifying Grace! Help us Lord!
Amen and Amen!!!!! It was almost good I wasn’t online last night or I would have talked WAY too much!!! I am so thankful that God has used you and your ministry to bolster, convict, encourage and affirm me!
Love this. Great study. This is the truth “Rather, discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness” .
Blessings.
Thanks for this excellent outline on leadership and self-discipline! I especially appreciate your comments on leaders falling into temptation and sin because they had not previously worked on self-discipline. We believers still have our sinful natures and we are never going to be perfect this side of eternity, BUT we can do much, by God’s grace, to discipline ourselves, as apostle Paul exhorts us to do in multiple passages.
Thank you for reading and good comment by the way. I think reading MacArthur quote about disqualification really made me think about the lack of self discipline and self control in more serious light than when I first started preparing for this series. How’s the snow and weather for you guys this morning?
RE: weather
It was cold and a little snowy today. We really bundled up for our morning walk around the cemetery. 30F now. Tomorrow, the temp jumps up 30 degrees to 60F. Will go over the entire lawn one last time (hopefully) tomorrow. How’s your day starting out?
You are right, Jim, like the sanctification process, we should cultivate self-discipline knowing that GOD is also helping us to have one. Self-discipline also begets respect, trust, and “authority” from among followers, superiors, and peers, and this is essential among leaders and otherwise. True, we live and work for GOD in whatever capacity we are doing, and as Christians, we can be a role model too as disciplined leaders and workers for CHRIST (even if we are working outside of church or ministry). Thank you very much for the lessons I’ve learned today. GOD bless you, Nancy, and your 3 kids!
That’s a good point about being self disciplined even as a role model no matter what capacity God has placed us in. You took really good notes I saw the email briefly before I went to sleep. It was a joy to see you again last night Gersom, the pleasure was ours! Thanks for the words of blessings for Nancy and the kids! I hope your day yesterday (Wednesday) went well?
We have a new subseries on glorified for GOD’s glory that will be posted in few seconds, wait it us 8:00AM here so it is posted by now.
[…] Outline: A Godly Leader is Self-Discipline […]
Reblogged this on The Searchlight.
Brilliant study and some excellent points .
Thank you.
Thanks for reading this. I’m praying for your upcoming evangelism on Friday
Thank you for praying . We had a good morning out there today although the temperature hit 43 c ( 109F) today .
I still find most people’s hearts are hardened and mostly think they are “good” compared to Hitler .
Sometimes “I cannot” is the truth, but for the believer should always be followed by “…but GOD can.” 😉
I have been sick frequently for most of my life, and I used to be jealous of people who received instant healing. But over time I have learned ways to be a good steward of the body God gave me, including a healthy diet, exercise, and refraining from unhealthy habits. God HAS given me healing – and self-discipline was an added “bonus.” 🙂
Wow thank you for your testimony. That’s awesome you shared that and I hope other would be blessed reading this. Not fully the same but before slightly analogous before I was a pastor I often felt I have to do a lot for the church when people drop the ball or didn’t keep their word of what they will do. Looking back God was teaching me the importance of self-discipline along with the privilege of serving Him! Hope you have a blessed weekend ahead of you, does your state have further restrictions?
Yes, they just closed up the bars and restaurants again.
I got more writing done than usual today, but I feel bad for the people who are struggling because of the restrictions. 😦

This is very important virtue that I should work on
