This is a new series we are starting on the attributes of God.
Selected Scriptures
Purpose: this session we looked at five truths concerning the truth that God is unique so that we would worship and cultivate a loving awe of God.
- General statement that God is unique
- God is different than humans
- There is Only One God
- God is different than false gods
- Three ways God can be distinct
Note: Some Words before we begin this study.
- Sometimes in Systematic Theology and Apologetics writing this is called the Creator/Creature distinction
- By unique I mean that God is unlike us or anything other creatures and creation.
- Also when we talk about God’s incommunicable attributes we are talking about attributes that He alone possess, which makes God unique of all beings.
Truth 1: General statement that God is unique
- “For this time I am going to send all My plagues on you and your servants and your people, so that you may know that there is no one like Me in all the earth.” (Exodus 9:14)
- In the context God is speaking to Moses.
- Moses has been speaking to the king of Egypt to free the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt.
- Here in this verse God explains the reason why God is sending plagues is so people know God is unique in that God said “there is no one like Me in all the earth.”
- “See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can save anyone from My hand.” (Deuteronomy 32:39)
- Here again we see God saying He is unique for God says “there is no god besides Me”
- In what ways is God unique?
- “It is I who put to death and give life.”
- “I have wounded and it is I who heal”
- “And there is no one who can save anyone from My hand”
- Other verses: Deuteronomy 4:35, Psalm 18:31, Isaiah 43:10, 44:8, Isaiah 45:5-6, 45:18, 45:21, 46:9.
Truth 2: God is different than humans
- God rebukes those who thinks God is like man: “These things you have done and I kept silent; You thought that I was just like you; I will rebuke you and present the case before your eyes.” (Psalm 50:21)
- “God is not a man, that He would lie, Nor a son of man, that He would change His mind; Has He said, and will He not do it? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” (Numbers 23:19)
- In the context this is Balaam the false prophet speaking.
- God is speaking truth through Balaam to rebuke the evil king Balak (18)
- In this rebuke there is a statement of what is not like: “God is not a man,”
- What specific differences are mentioned?
- God does not lie.
- God does not change His Mind.
- God is one who keeps His Word
- Similar to Numbers 23:19 is 1 Samuel 15:29: “Also the Glory of Israel will not lie nor change His mind; for He is not a man, that He would change His mind.”
- “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)
- We see here that man cannot be compared to God.
- God is different from us in terms of:
- Thoughts
- Ways
- Specifically the reason why is because God is greater in terms of His:
- Ways
- Thoughts
- Note there is a poetic emphasis of “Ways” with this verses’ Chiasm (Hebrew word ‘sandwich’):
- Thoughts
- Ways
- Ways
- Thoughts
- Thoughts
- “Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. (1 Corinthians 1:25)
- Distinctions between God and men being made.
- Discussion Question: How is God different?
- “Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! 34 For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor?” (Romans 11:33-34)
- This is a doxological praise that Paul broke into after some serious intense theology of God’s predestination and the role of Israel and Gentiles in Romans 9-11.
- No one can search His ways and His Judgment.
Truth 3: There is Only One God
- Here we see God is not just different qualitatively but quantitatively there is only one God, further reinforcing the point that God is unique.
- Yahweh, the God of the Bible is alone in that He is qualitatively incomparable: “Who is like You among the gods, O Lord? Who is like You, majestic in holiness, Awesome in praises, working wonders?” (Exodus 15:11)
- Here in context is Moses’ song after the Exodus
- With all that Moses heard and seen He knew God was different than other so called “gods.”
- “See now that I, I am He, And there is no god besides Me; It is I who put to death and give life. I have wounded and it is I who heal, And there is no one who can deliver from My hand” (Deuteronomy 32:39)
- Here in context is Moses’ song to the people (44)
- Some people have argued that the Bible is a product of evolution; that in the beginning of the Bible the people believed in henotheism which “is the belief that there are other gds, but only one God is to be worshipped.”[1] See for example above in Exodus 15:11.
- But note the “no god… no one” language in this verse that shows the possibilities of other gods being closed.
- This is significant in that this appeared in the first five books of Moses thus questioning the thesis that the Bible was originally henotheistic.
- Thus reference to other gods must be seen as rhetorical. More about false gods below.
- Other Old Testament monotheistic passages in historical books affirmed by others: 2 Samuel 7:22, 1 Kings 8:60, 1 Chronicles 17:20.[2]
- Isaiah’s Theology is clearly monotheistic: Isaiah 43:10, 44:6, 44:8, 45:5-6, 45:14, 45:18, 45:21-22, 46:9.[3]
- Survey these passages and we see the strong use of “no other besides me” language.
- Note how Isaiah 37:16 refer to the fact that there is one God even when considering other kingdoms and their gods: “OLord of hosts, the God of Israel, who is enthroned above the cherubim, You are the God, You alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth.”
- For an Old Testament book Isaiah is definitely heavier in its emphasis on Monotheism.
- Jesus Himself affirmed there is only one true God: “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” (John 17:3)
- Jesus the Son of God Himself attest to the One True God.
- Do you value your knowledge of the one true God? Don’t forget John 17:3 that this is eternal life!
Truth 4: God is different than false gods
- He is different than other false gods
- “For even though they knew God, they did not[n]honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. 22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible man and of birds and four-footed animals and [o]crawling creatures.” (Romans 1:21-23)
- “For they exchanged the truth of God for[p]a lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed [q] Amen.” (Romans 1:25)
- Both Passages imply that the Creator ought to be Worshipped.
- Both Passages shows that it is a bad thing to worship creatures and creation.
- What does the Bible says about other gods?
- The Bible calls other gods idols: “Forall the gods of the peoples are idols, But the Lord made the heavens.” (Psalm 96:4-5)
- The Bible evaluates idols as worthless; read Psalm 115:4-7 and also verse 8 with its implication of what it means for those who follow them.
- These other gods do not truly have Divine natures: “However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods.” (Galatians 4:8)
- These other gods are demonic: “However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods.” (Galatians 4:8)
Truth 5: Three ways God can be distinct
- Quantity (how much)
- When we think of some of God’s communicable attributes for instance God’s patience, God’s patience is longer in duration in time than our ability to be patient.
- Yet God being quantitatively different than us isn’t fully adequate to capture the essence of His uniqueness: For example the difference between God and creatures isn’t that God has more being and creature has less being.[4]
- Quality (which)
- When we think of some of God’s communicable attributes for instance God’s love, God’s love is greater than our love.
- Yet God being qualitatively different than us isn’t fully adequate to capture the essence of His uniqueness: God is a different king of being than the class of humans so with God and creatures it isn’t as if there’s a comparison of two more item within the same class and judging which one is better.[5]
- Quiddity (what)
- Quiddity is an uncommon term but it refers to the idea of “what” in which God is different than what creatures and creation are.[6]
- This type of difference acknowledge that God in comparison to us are “apples and oranges” differences.
Theological Implications
- We should not be surprised that some of God’s attributes are not like us and His creation (incommunicable attributes).
- We should not be surprised that even some of God’s attributes that we have (communicable attributes) is different from us not in terms of degrees but kind as well.
- His knowledge is not like our knowledge of something.
- His love is not like our love.
- With importance for the Trinity: His personhood and Being is different than our personhood.
- Yet this does not mean it is meaningless to talk about God and humans in relations to God. We can talk about God analogously.
- What we mean by analogous isn’t by means of analogy or illustration but in the sense that we think or speak of God we acknowledge there’s connection and disconnection between God and humans.[7]
- For example to talk about God is love we say He is love in His attribute in proportion to Him as God while human love as an attribute is to the portion of us as humans.[8]
- This means that we keep in mind that God’s love is original, eternal, perfect, Holy, etc.
What does this mean for our lives?
- Knowing He’s different than us as our Creator and we are His creatures means we should worship Him with awe and praise!
- Have humility when we study God: We don’t know about Him unless He reveals Himself to us and its not because of our wisdom!
- We should expect to learn about things about God that shows how He is different than us—and that includes the possibility that He is Triune.
- Meditate on how is He different than us has implication for our lives:
- He does not lie; we can trust in Him!
- His ways of things are different but also better than our plans and ways: we need to trust in Him.
- He does not lie so His words are promises: we must love to trust in Him!
- Yet at the same time though He is different He is also the original archetype and we are to “mirror” Him in a creaturely humble way as His image; How have your life mirror God in terms of love, holiness and patience?
- What other implications can you think of?

I’ve learned a new word: quiddity. And it works great in parallel with quantity and quality, of course.
I like that you used personhood instead of how others use personality. The latter is less neutral in that it can connote an entire collection of qualities, of which some could be good and some bad.
Good point about the personhood and also I learned of quiddity recently too with the book i footnoted. I know you are big with exegesis and Greek and New Testament studies but does systematic theology capture your fancy and any particular authors? Tangent: I’m praying today with everything in the US…
Early on, in my zeal to learn, I picked up a number of systematic theologies: Louis Berkhof, Charles Hodge, Grudem, Chafer, and Thomas Oden. I see pluses and minuses of all (and Hodge can be challenge to read because of the somewhat dated language). Along the way, I added Pannenberg, Charles Finney, and Hendrikus Berkhof (as I came across them), to broaden my scope and to understand differing perspectives.
I should probably amplify my meaning in the last paragraph. Personality has a much wider semantic range. Personhood is limited to what constitutes a Being/being as existing as a ‘person’/’Person’, whereas personality can mean the same, but can also mean other qualities of a B/being. The latter is too loaded, IMO, for theological purposes.
Same here, I also learned a new word in quiddity!
Great study. God is indeed unique. “He does not lie; we can trust in Him!”
Look forward to this series.
Blessings.
Thank you so much for this indepth study Jim! It certainly deserves and requires more than one reading, and with an open Bible. It is always fruitful to return to what are often considered foundational beliefs, it is similar to a regular service checking oil levels etc. In your final words you ask how our lives could mirror our God; immediately charity popped into my mind. His Word is full of examples of His compassion for the poor and needy, our Father God is the original Charitable Benefactor…our lives should reflect this each day. Thank you again for this exciting new series, God bless you richly today brother.
[…] God’s attribute: God is unique […]
Wow! Thank you for this excellent outline that teaches from Scripture how God is unique! I think we can take God’s attributes for granted over time, but a focused study and series like this really helps us to reappreciate them afresh. Looking forward to more installments!
The more we meditate on the attributes of God, the more He will increase and we will decrease. I am also “looking forward to more installments!”
You’re welcome! I love studying and reading and teaching on God’s attributes! The more we study Him the more I realize how unique God is, so I thought we begin with this attribute first! When do you start with the company again?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Start day is five days away, Monday a.m. How does your day look?
Hey, Jim! I love God’s uniqueness. I think it takes GREAT effort to not put God and His attributes in a box. I think far too often people limit God and put Him and His uniqueness in a box because it helps to better understand and relate to Him. I really believe that we need to do heart checks regularly to see if and where we are putting God in a box.
I also think in relation to God’s uniqueness we have to come to a place of acceptance there are things about God that are a mystery. While I appreciate your discussion of God being One, He is also Three. Gregory of Nazianus said something along the lines that when you think of the One you have to think of the Three. Thomas McCall describes the Trinity like a constant dance going from the One to the Three because if ponder to long on the One risk that God will become a monad and ponder and fixate to long on the Three run the risk of tritheism. The Trinity is unique unlike anything we can even begin to comprehend!
The beautiful thing about studying the attributes of God is that if taken seriously, one has NO choice but to say along with John the Baptist, “He must increase and I must decrease!”
Love and blessings to you, Nancy and Kiddos!!
I enjoy your comment, indeed we must not put God in a box and with the One and the Three we must realize one doesn’t take priority over the other, and your point is so true we don’t want to focus on one to the exclusion of the other side of the truth lest we become Unitarians or believe in three gods. I love your point in the ending: “ The beautiful thing about studying the attributes of God is that if taken seriously, one has NO choice but to say along with John the Baptist, “He must increase and I must decrease!”. How true! Thanks for your blessing to our family, may the Lord bless your day today for you and Nathan. Are there Amish buggies on roads in your neighborhood?
I hope you know I wasn’t suggesting or saying that I think you put God in a box (maybe an OODA loop??!!) Haha, joking not sure if the Marines ever used that!
We don’t have any Amish living in our neighborhood; however, as soon as you leave our neighborhood, there are potential for Amish buggies. We have many Amish in our area just not in our hood. The Amish are amazing builders and carpenters. Most of my house will be furnished by local Amish craftsmen (yes, they are men).
Right now I am doing the most unenjoyable but necessary task in my world, getting rid of physical books. Do you struggle with getting rid of books? My Aunt has a book stand at our local country market where she sells used books, I am giving A LOT (she can keep the money, I just need the space), the others I am giving to my friend and mentee, I think they will really bless her. I have some Christian teaching and learning books that I will never use and I have no clue who to donate them to. I don’t know of any church library that would want them either! Arg, any thoughts?!
GOD, our Creator, is indeed unique and I’ve learned a lot from your lecture today and the enhanced version i.e. your post, Jim! Thank you! We can only know a small chunk of who GOD entirely is but you are right, we are humbled and very happy at what He revealed to us through His Word and inspiration. It is indeed sufficient to trust and obey Him. Looking forward to listening more to GOD’s attributes in the lenses of our belief in the Tri-unity of GOD. Blessings to you, Nancy, and your kids!
I love what you said “We can only know a small chunk of who GOD entirely is but you are right, we are humbled and very happy at what He revealed to us through His Word and inspiration” and to that I say amen! There was a lot of joy preparing this and reading and studying and being in His Word! This is one of the things I’m looking forward to this year. It was a joy to see you yesterday and have you participate along with Mandy! Studying His attributes drives me to obedience more than if I just sat there and just thinking about my own self power to obey (which in reality I’m so weak in my flesh, not to mention it doesn’t please God when we are driven by self-righteousness), for it is a heart of worship that should fuel our obedience, amen? Blessings to your upcoming Thursday!
Amen! Thank you too, Jim! These lessons from you help us to be a better Christian by knowing the Triune GOD and discerning GOD’s will for us, including salvation, in this temporal/transient life.
He is Holy!
Reblogged this on My Logos Word.
Amen. That is Fine Teaching.
Thank you for your encouragement Maw Maw. With all that is going on in our country, let us pray for the US with all that is going shall we?
Yes. In prayer.
The God of the Bible truly is unique in so many ways including being Triune and Impassable and Immutable!
you have a beautiful site🧡. I will be able to read a little more or you some of your fantastic material now that I have some time. I will take a break from posting between moving and so many posts I have done, I am burned out.
Thanks for that encouragement! The last few days have been busy for me with ministry, I hope your new place that you moved to is nice a blessing! Is it still in Florida?
God is the One and Only
Amen!🙏🙏💕
As usual Jim, your well-organized and Biblical study is a worthy read. As I was reading about Moses and his mission to free Israel from their Egyptian task masters, my thoughts went to Pharoah following the final plague and the eventual destruction of his army of chariots at the sea. Ultimately, he realized God is GOD!
Love this! And you quoted from Rehinan’s Deity and Decree! Superb!
Wow you know of Rehinan and his book! Have you read this book before or others by him???
I have some of his books and writings at home and on my online library.
I haven’t read his Deity and Decree. I wish i have copy of it.
