Garment and the Gospel?
Clothes is a one trillion dollar industry. The Bible is not so-other worldly that clothing doesn’t matter. Acts 9:36 even stated an early member of the church was a maker of garments. And the theme of garments in Scripture points us to God’s grace. Hebrews 1:11 and James 1:23 makes the observation of how garments is temporary and so is our life. Zechariah 3:3-4 tells us how even a High priest name Joshua who was spoken of highly elsewhere is a wretched sinner where in a vision he wore filthy garments that symbolizes his sinfulness. If you ever been embarrassed with what you wore and the condition of your clothes you can relate to Joshua! Yet God also says we can be clothed in righteousness and have a garment without shame in Revelation 3:5 and 3:18. This is from God but it is costly. Costly not to you but Jesus the Savior. He died on the Cross. While being crucified His clothes and last garment was taken from him according to Luke 23:34. He died naked and humiliated, mocked and shamed. He bore our shame fully and died for the sins of those who would trust in Him. Trust in Him. This is the message of the Bible. This is the message I want to preach.
So thankful for the Jesus and the sacrifice He made for us to be in right standing with God.
Blessings for the morning insight.
Excellent post and collection of articles, thanks brother. One of my gripes is how often certain churches and believers make decisions about others based on clothes, it is wicked.
That is indeed wicked, a wicked partiality that the book of James condemns. Which makes me think of how much more about clothes the Bible has to say about clothes more than I realize if I don’t consciously think about it.
Encouraging words this morning Pastor. Immediately brought to mind another garment teaching, Matt 22:11, which had seemed so harsh to me. We are truly hopeless without the righteousness of Christ!
Thank you brother.
Oh how we need to be clothed with Christ’s righteousness! I’m grateful it is a free gift of God. Isn’t it so neat God uses clothes as an illustration of the Gospel? God’s Word always has something I’m learning…never gets old! So much to dig into!
Amen brother!
Reblogged this on Talmidimblogging.
I appreciate this post. There is so much to the putting on and taking off in the Christian life. I am SO thankful that we are bathed/covered in the blood of Christ and dressed in His righteousness/garments. Do you live far from Echo Park? Praying for you as you preach, teach and share the Gospel.
Thanks for sharing the “put on/put off” motif, man Scripture is so rich with this theme. We don’t live too far from Echo Park though I don’t know exactly where it is and need a map but I know the general direction where it is at. Was there something or someone in particular from there? By the way I’m looking forward to April 3rd with your second session on the OT.
I read about unrest there last night and was hoping it wasn’t near y’all!!!
Thanks for this good message! I’m also reminded of the wedding garment in Matthew 22. We are clothed in the wedding garment, the imputed perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ, the only garment that will be allowed at the diving wedding banquet.
Amen that is a sobering parable! Looking forward to that Divine Wedding Banquet. What a day that would be. One that we will remember forever…I am glad by the way to see your daily posts this week! I imagine there will be one on Friday too?
Thanks! I created more posts than usual last week because of my “couch convalescence” so I need to thin out the queue a bit.
Good article. Let’s preach it as long as long as we have breath. “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, it is the power of God unto salvation.”
Amen thank you for your comments! Amen may we not be ashamed of the Gospel! Are you preaching any upcoming Sundays soon?
Yes, On April 11
Well expressed: “we can be clothed in righteousness and have a garment without shame”. This reminds me of the clean heart David yearned for in Psalm 51.

♥️ Amen! A solid message you deliver “Trust in Him”. ♥️
Trusting in Him is not easy but seeing nuggets of Gold in the Bible motivate us to desire to obey more and obey out of love. How is your day?
My day is moving well, but I am prone to fits of anxiety. I remember your words “Trust in Him” and I feel calm, again, through His Holy Spirit. ♥️
Amen and Amen.
And amen! Thanks for all the likes and comments on here and our FAcebook page!
You are welcome, Grand.
Amen!
Yes, from the very beginning, garments are part of the Lord’s message. Adam and Eve tried to hide their shame with garments made from leaves–like our efforts at righteousness, which quickly crumble. Instead, God provided them garments made from animal skins–a sign of the sacrifice of his Son, a life surrendered to clothe us in righteousness. Jacob came to his father and received a blessing because he was clothed in his brother’s garment, while his brother was out doing the work that pleased his father (as Jesus pleases his Father but clothes us in his righteousness so we are accepted). And the sons of Jacob brought their father their brother Joseph’s garment, stained in blood, to hide their own sin from their father. And all that is just in Genesis! J.
Thanks for sharing that. I do recommend others your book on Genesis and Christ. How are you doing brother?
And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.
Revelation 19:8 NKJV
Thanks for that verse, another verse that is part of these theme. Hope you are doing well!
This wasn’t what I thought it was but more edifying than I thought
Let’s proclaim Jesus and Him crucified till our last breath.
Amen! How was it for evangelism?
Didn’t go too well last Friday. We are considering hitting the streets on Good Friday.
I am going to read more of your articles this evening, but because of WordPress’ new block editor that we are MADE to use, I have to switch screens to comment, and then switch again to LIKE posts. It’s crazy. Wow, WordPress!
Pastor Jim, thank you for sharing the Word of God. The love Jesus took with Him to the cross allows us to be clothed in the Gospel.
That’s true. Never really thought of that.
Amen, SlimJim. Jesus is the only way to the Father.
Amen John 14:6
Ours garment starts with God and ends with God. Self righteousness is clothed with sin upon sin
