I was looking for something that is a short read for our church youth (pre-teens and teens) that preaches the Gospel that is short and readable in one sitting that also introduce them to the heritage of sound Bible teachers from Church history and I thought this booklet published by Chapel Library might fit the bill. I wasn’t disappointed with The Gospel in a Single Verse. Spurgeon is among my favorite past preachers to read.
This booklet is an adaptation of a sermon that Spurgeon preached from 1 Timothy 1:15. I like the way this booklet is divided. First section is “Our name: Sinners” followed by “Our Need: Salvation” and then turning towards God’s grace section three is “His Name” Christ Jesus” followed by “His Deed: Came into this world.” The first two sections stating the problem parallels with the next two section stating the Gospel hope! I enjoyed it! The booklet is closed with a fifth section titled “Our Acceptance: I am Chief.” Here he appeals readers to confess Christ and to trust in Him.
The Gospel presentation is clear in this booklet. Spurgeon has shown me how there’s so much in God’s Word including a single verse. Spurgeon has been called the Prince of Preachers and he’s been one of those few preachers whom I can only read his writings and feel the electricity of his preaching. Yet it was an encouraging exhortation to read in this work Spurgeon telling us that we don’t need to have “ornaments set forth the Gospel” for the Gospel story is already marvelous enough. How amazing and God-centered was Mr. Spurgeon! Yet it is so true. He appeals to the nonbelievers to pay attention to the content of the Gospel than his rhetoric; I wished we had more preachers like Spurgeon today! While this wasn’t as profoundly in-depth insightful or new information Spurgeon divulged in his contents compared to some of his other teachings I have enjoyed still I give this a 5 out of 5 for the Gospel clarity. That is important if we are to present the Gospel to save souls. I think even preachers and teachers can benefit from this with learning the mechanics of a clear and timeless Gospel presentation. Spurgeon died in 1892 and I’m amazed at how well over hundred years later Spurgeon’s writings which are adapted from his sermons, still speaks to us in a manner that is still relevant and fresh. This booklet also makes for a great tract to give to nonbelievers. Even if you are a season saint you will also be blessed by this too!
So glad you and the youth benefitted from this! Will check it out! Have a great day with your family! Praying for y’all!
Thanks! Going to nap and hope to have a good day! Have a good day yourself, did you guys catch any fish this past weekend???
Sorry to interrupt, Jim but Mandy, are you still catching fish? 😉
HAHAHAHHA Nathan and I are eating breakfast and he said, “no worries, Kent! Catch and release only and we NEVER use nets!!!!”
Not bycatch? Yes, it is tue nets that does the huge damage. Let us enjoy fish designed ice cream then. Dinner!
You are SO funny!!!!!
Definitely praying for your sleep! No fish, but was great to be outside on the water!!!!!
Thank you for introducing us to this concise resource. I think this is “gold” as it contains the salient Truths based on your review and good for sharing to both nonbelievers and (c)hristians friends. True, “Gospel story is already marvelous enough” because it is GOD alone that calls and opens the hearts of humans to “digest” it. Blessings to you and your family!
Amen! I think too it is gold! It is good “fishing” material! I speak of fishing of men and women of course. Just curious if you like literal fishing yourself?
Yes! Enjoying it way back in early 2000 i.e. fishing Grouper and Red Snapper on our fish cages. The grouper was kind of dumb as its kind kept on taking the bait unlike the intelligent snapper who won’t take the bait for a long while if it has seen one of their cagemates made that error.
Thanks for the great resource. I look forward to reading it.
Blessings.
Thanks for this review! Spurgeon’s sermons are a blessing and delight to read.
It is indeed a blessing! He’s one of my favorite authors! How are you going after a long weekend? I had somewhat a long weekend too and had a long nap on Monday evening and night! Have you grabbed any filet o fish on Fridays this past few weeks?
Have a good rest day! Not much rest for me today…took my wife to a regular MD appt. this AM and now walking our way through the long line at the vaccination center for her second shot. She made her appointments at Syracuse 70 miles away when appointments hard to get locally. My appointments are at a drug store a few miles from our house. Nope no fillet o fish, how about you?
Reblogged this on Talmidimblogging.
Thanks.
Thanks…
I will have to look into this for (my own self, and) my youth. It is something I had considered getting before.
What are you going over with your youth right now? Always like to hear what others are doing!

Thank you. I have Spurgeon’s commentary on Kindle.:)
Encouraged to hear that! That is so awesome, he’s one of my favorite preacher from the 1800s. Glad you have his works Maw Maw!
I love ya. Grand.
Jim, thanks for sharing your comments on Spurgeon’s booklet. I have appreciated reading some of his past sermons in abbreviated form.
My wife started reading some Spurgeon books and was shocked to find out he lived in the 1800s. With other contemporary “Charles S.” authors like Swindoll and Stanley, you can get confused. Especially when it seems Spurgeon has his finger on the pulse of modern times. It goes to show that Satan really does not have that many arrows in his quiver. He puts a fresh coat of paint on and then sends the old arrows flying and we think it is something new. But that is good in that God never changes.
Wow I love that: “ It goes to show that Satan really does not have that many arrows in his quiver. He puts a fresh coat of paint on and then sends the old arrows flying and we think it is something new.” That is really well stated. It’s very Spurgeon-like, must have come from spending a lot of Time with Spurgeon? Wow awesome that your wife has read Spurgeon…is this something she said recently or often?
She has not read a lot recently. With her health issues, she has trouble concentrating, but 10 years ago, she had read 3-4 books by Spurgeon before she read the book jacket to figure our he was not a contemporary.
