This is a series on the attributes of God.
Purpose: In this lesson we will continue to see the universal scope of God’s control specifically over angels and demons and man.
- God’s control over angels
- God’s control over fallen angels
- God’s control over man
God’s control over angels
- God can send the angels to fulfill His will
- “And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other” (Matthew 24:31)
- Matthew 24 is about Jesus’ second coming.
- In the immediate context the “He” that is sending forth angels refer to the Son of Man.
- Earlier in this series we established that the Son of Man is the second person within the Godhead; thus, angels obey the Triune God.
- “The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness,” (Matthew 24:41)
- Here we see the angels obey the Son of man even with being sent to gather the lawless.
- How awesome is the thought that the lawless are weaker than angels, and though angels are stronger than humans they submit to God’s will.
- “And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other” (Matthew 24:31)
- God’s control and authority angels is seen in their worship of God: “And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures; and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,” (Revelation 7:11)
- This is a scene from heaven.
- Note all the angels acknowledge his sovereignty in their physical act of worshipping Him.
- The Four Gospels feature many account of angels doing the work of God. It shows God is in control of them.
God’s control over fallen angels
- God’s control over fallen angels are seen in His ability to send them to places of judgment.
- “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;” (2 Peter 2:4)
- First off, fallen angels are angels who have sinned.
- Note here how God has the control to “cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment.”
- “30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. 31 They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss. 32 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter [a]the swine. And He gave them permission.” (Luke 8:30-32)
- Jesus’ control over the demons apparently was recognized by the demons even during Jesus’ earthly ministry.
- Note the demon’s fear and recognition of Jesus’ power “to command them to go away into the abyss” (Luke 8:31).
- Jesus is able to exercise that control of power!
- “And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day,” (Jude 1:6)
- Some demons have not obeyed God and are extra rebellious that their judgment already happened.
- They are currently chained already.
- Summary: God is in control of demons in his judgment, some of whom He already has restrained (Jude 1:6), others will still face it in their future (2 Peter 2:4) and demons recognize that power of being cast in the abyss can occur in this side of history (Luke 8:30-32)
- “For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment;” (2 Peter 2:4)
- Satan asks God for permission for certain acts
- The Bible doesn’t say Satan asks God for permission for everything he does but we do see instances where he does ask God permission before he does something.
- “Have You not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.” (Job 1:10)
- This is Satan talking to God in heaven concerning Job.
- Satan recognizes there are somethings he cannot do because of God’s power.
- “31 “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has [a]demanded permission to sift you like wheat; 32 but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” (Luke 22:31-32)
- Context here is Jesus’ last night before His crucifixion.
- Here Jesus reveals that Satan has been asking God to be able to attack Simon.
- Again Satan acknowledges God’s control.
- The Four Gospels feature many account of Jesus casting out demons and spirits. It shows God is in control of them.
God’s control over man
- “The plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the Lord.” (Proverbs 16:1)
- Here we see Hebrew poetry of two lines called Parallelism.
- It is contrastive with the content of man’s heart (“The plans of the heart”) belonging to man contrast with man’s “answer of the tongue” source is “from the Lord.”
- God control man’s tongues.
- A good example of Proverbs 16:1 illustrated in Scripture is Balaam’s intent to curse Israel ended up being pronounced blessings to Israel from Numbers 22 and following.
- While the heart of a man belongs to man, nevertheless as we shall see, God is still in control over man’s heart.
- “Many plans are in a man’s heart, But the counsel of the Lord will stand.” (Proverbs 19:21)
- Here is another Hebrew poetry of two lines.
- It is a contrastive parallelism.
- First line makes an observation about man’s heart: “Many plans are in a man’s heart”
- Second line shows God’s plan is sovereign over man’s plans: “But the counsel of the Lord will stand.”
- “The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wishes.” (Proverbs 21:1)
- Here is another Hebrew poetry of two lines.
- This time the second line expands on the point of the first line.
- Among men, the most powerful is probably kings.
- Yet God says a “king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the Lord”
- Elaborating the point the author of Proverbs adds “He turns it wherever He wishes.”
- “The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)
- Here is another Hebrew poetry of two lines.
- It is a contrastive parallelism.
- First line makes an observation that: “The mind of man plans his way”
- Yet God is the One in control since “the Lord directs his steps.”
- Is God sovereign over man’s disability?
- “The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” (Exodus 4:11)
- In context this is God’s reply to Moses’ complaint that he can’t speak.
- Notice here that God in a rhetorical question says disabilities such as “mute or deaf, …or blind” was made by Him.
- To reinforce this point notice God asks ““Who has made man’s mouth?”and “Is it not I, the Lord?”
- “As He passed by, He saw a man blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he would be born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him.” (John 9:1-3)
- Notice the wrong view the disciples of Jesus had concerning the source of disability (John 9:2).
- Jesus correction: ““It was neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but it was so that the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:1-3).
- You might have a lot of questions about God’s sovereignty which hopefully we will explore in the next few sessions but for now we want to establish that God is Sovereign over individuals human lives.
- “The Lord said to him, “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes him mute or deaf, or seeing or blind? Is it not I, the Lord?” (Exodus 4:11)
Implications
- Focus more on God than fear of demons: God is Sovereign over them!
- In your spiritual warfare, don’t trust in yourself but in God as the angel Michael gives us the example: “But Michael the archangel, when he disputed with the devil and argued about the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a railing judgment, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”” (Jude 9)
- Be careful of speaking nonsense of the spiritual realm: “Daring, self-willed, they do not tremble when they revile angelic [c]majesties, 11 whereas angels who are greater in might and power do not bring a reviling judgment against them before the Lord.” (2 Peter 2:10b-11)
- Praise God for His Sovereignty of our Salvation despite hostile angelic beings: “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 8:37-39)
- If God is in control of our individual lives, we can pray for God to change us!
- If God is in control of our individual lives, we can pray for God to change others!
- We should be humble about our plans and goals. Note, in a future session we will discuss more about the role of human responsibility in light of God’ sovereignty and decision making.
- We should have a change view concerning people’s disabilities.
- Praise God for His Sovereignty of our Salvation: “But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us.
You are right, we should not be scared of demons, fallen angels, satan, or the evil ones, Jim. After all, they are just created by GOD as angels back then, and not in control of us. We, however, must surrender to GOD and trust in His sovereignty over us with love and reverent fear. GOD is sovereign and in control of events, including the rebellion in heaven. GOD knows before creation that it will happen but like evil men (e.g. Pharoah), He has a purpose for those fallen angels so His power and glory will be shown (e.g. healing of demon-possessed man). Also, GOD, indeed is in control of man as He can choose/elect one person but make the other one spiritually blind. And, we humans are blessed as GOD gives us salvation from His divine wrath even when we sinned; angels are be tormented in hell when they sinned. Thank you for this lesson that GOD is in control and sovereign of our lives. Blessings to you, Nancy, and your kids!
Thanks for this comment that share so much truths! Thanks also for typing this up yesterday as three points of applications and thoughts. When you pointed out how angels when they fall don’t have redemption that reminded me of how God doesn’t have to save any of us. Sobering to think about this truth. But the fact that God does redeem sinners shows us the grace and mercy of God which I’m so thankful for. And eternally grateful. How could we not love God???
You are right, how could we not lobe GOD. GOD makes the other blind.
Good morning brother. Great insight here. The scope of God’s sovereignty is simple stunning. It is hard to wrap my mind around it some days but these are great examples.
Blessings for an amazing day in paradise.

🙌 love the applications…🙌
Thanks! Have a blessed week sister!
Thank you, Jim. To know that “angels are ministering spirits to the heirs of salvation (Heb.1:14) and the Holy Spirit is within us and with us always, we have assurance for constant guidance, protection, and help at all times. Blessings for you, your family, and your ministry. .
Amen! God bless you sister, those are truth filled comments. Knowing God uses angels to minister to us is an encouragement. How are you doing these days Fran?
Still waiting for direction. Thank you.
This is such an excellent lesson, Jimmy!!! God’s Sovereignty and the omni attributes bring so much joy and comfort to my weary soul! I agree with Michael’s comment. God’s Sovereignty is stunning and I am thankful for the effort that you have given this two part series! Praying for you, Nancy and kiddos.
Studying God’s attributes seems to pay great dividends! I’m so grateful for God being God, with all His attributes. Our one youth seems to be deciding to stay in California instead of Penn State. Will keep you posted with his decision!
Hey, Jimmy! Just an FYI he was applying to the University of Penn (Penn or UPenn) which is Ivy League! Penn State is FAR from it!!!! I am truly impressed! They have one of the best Jewish studies departments in the country and even now I think they would laugh at my application!!!!!
The sovereignty of God seems to be forgotten in this “not today, Satan” pop culture, so I’m glad someone is writing about it! Fantastic points under your Implications section 👍
Thanks for reading this all the way to the end with the implications! Applications are important and applications driven by God’s truth of His attributes even more so! How is your day going so far?
So far so good! About to get my studies started 🙂 I hope you have a good one!

Thanks for this outline study on God’s sovereignty! Such a blessing to read through and know the Lord is aware of everything that’s going on in our lives and is working it out.
You’re welcome! It was for our study last night. How is your day going?
RE: day
Thanks! I was busy raking leaves out of the garden earlier and the working on stuff for my sister. That will be my everyday part-time job until we get her moved down to Florida and sell her house.
How is your day going?
Thank you, Sweetie. Flooding in these parts.:(
Oh no! Taking it to God, keep me posted yeah? Do you have to evacuate???
No. Things are balancing out.:) Prayer works..
Thanks for this. Question about Elohim, are you familiar with Dr. Heisler’s Divine Council? The God is the Elohim among elohims?
I have heard video clips of Dr Heisler talk about it but don’t know how reliable it is; I’m not against it, just don’t know how helpful it is to read that much Ancient Near East background into Psalm 82, etc, but I also don’t see Heisler as heretical. I need to read his book Unseen Realm sitting on my shelf. What do you think of the Divine Counsel idea?
I read some of it. I think he has a point. But I am yet to dig deeper into it. Some of the passage about the divine council make more sense in his view than the traditional interpretation.
Pastor Jim, thanks for opening up more of Scripture’s meaning. I especially find much to lift up from the parallelism found in many of the verses in Proverbs. I will be looking for more of these.

I can still remember a dream I had many years ago, when I was on a Christian school board, and we were desperately praying for a building to replace the one we had been forced to leave. In my dream I couldn’t see a face, but I could hear a voice saying sternly, “Annie needs a building for the school. Go get her one. And no dilly-dallying around!” (lol)
Did you guys get the building?
Of course. 😊
