So here’s a lighter post that I wanted to ask readers the following question: What are you planning to read for May 2021?
Do share with us, and I hope you sharing would encourage other readers to read God’s Word.
Personally I’m reading slowly through Genesis and Proverbs and also I’m reading through some big books that’s been slowing down my book reviews on the blog (I’m also behind on writing book reviews of the works I did finished). I’m reading a book by Van Til and also started a short book on Biblical Theology of blessing.
Reading should be a Christian regular habit and ordinary means of grace for sanctification and growth. For a study on reading check out our “Christian Theology on Reading Series– Audio Mp3s and PDF available free.”
So what are you planning to read for May 2021?
I received hard copies of The IVP Bible Background Commentary (Old and New Testaments) https://www.logos.com/product/204338/the-ivp-bible-background-commentary for my birthday recently and they both are substantial volumes, so . . . besides the Bible, that will take care of any external Biblical reading for a while!
Those are great resources, especially the OT. Enjoy and happy belated birthday!!
Thanks Mandy, I have a habit of underlining and color coding, so it could be a good while!
I appreciate your color coding system, I do the same!!!
Great choice. Blessings for your studies.
Wow how are they as resources? I’ve heard of them but never looked at them before
Just getting into them, they look pretty good from what I’ve read so far.
I have several in process right now. It is great to see what others are reading. Thanks for making this happen.
Walton, J. H. (2001). Genesis. Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan.
Grudem, W. (2020). Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Biblical Doctrine (Second Edition). Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan Academic.
Gundry, R. H. (2010). Commentary on the New Testament: Verse-by-Verse Explanations with a Literal Translation. Peabody, MA: Hendrickson Publishers.
Wuest, K. S. (1997). Wuest’s word studies from the Greek New Testament: for the English reader. Grand Rapids: Eerdmans.
Hodge, C. (1997). Systematic theology. Oak Harbor, WA: Logos Research Systems, Inc.
Stott, J. (Ed.). (2020). The Message of the Sermon on the Mount: Christian Counter-Culture (Revised Edition). London: IVP.
Walton’s Genesis book is fantastic. While I don’t agree with all his positions of things, I really appreciate his insight on the ANE!! You’re the second person I know who is reading Gundry NT commentary, I will check that out! I agree with you, love this post and to learn what others are reading!!!
Brother that is a lot you are reading and that is so encouraging to read!
I am going slowly through numbers using the Revised Expositors Bible Commentary. I am reading The Gospel According to Nahum: Severe Compassion by Gregory Cook. I am also reading The Wisdom Pyramid: Feeding your Soul in a Post Truth World by Brett McCracken. For a book that’s less than 200 pages taking me a long time to read as I am taking notes and really thinking about what he’s saying. I long for wisdom and to be wise and so this book is convicting me to examine my daily media diet.
The God of all wisdom will guide you. Blessings.
Thanks, Michael!!
Hi Mandy, Your decision to get away from Twitter and FaceBook are increasingly becoming seen by me as a wise move. The ONLY reason I currently stay on them is that I repost my WordPress articles on both of them and quite often I get comments and new contacts through them. You have no idea how many times I have thought of just dropping them because of their irritation factor but just when I do, I get a comment etc. I did open an account on DingDash and so far it seems pretty good. Alan and SlimJim are both on it. Blessings!
Hey, Bruce! So I am the only person under 40 (for another 5 months) that has NEVER been on social media!!! When I tell people that they’re either horrified and want to start an account for me or they are like wow, good for you. Truly God made that a no go for me from the start! Whether MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest or any other social media site. Half the time I hear what people say or read blogs talking about what is being said I’m like what is this, who starts this and why are you believing this?! I don’t begrudge anyone who is on it, it was just a personal conviction for me from the beginning. I hear about the wars that ensue and it grieves me. I struggled with starting a blog because I really am not interested in social media. I will admit, I’ve never even heard of ding dash!! Anyway, that’s enough about me but for those wondering why I’m not found on these platforms, this is why! Love and blessings to you and Peggy!!
Thoroughly understandable and totally defensible! There’s a small amount of envy in there if you look for it! Likewise to you and Nathan!
I’m glad you are reading Severe Compassion! That book by Brett sounds like a practical book but also engages with postmodernism?
Yes! You would like the book I am positive of that. I think it would be understandable for youth as well to get them thinking about media/electronics and wisdom.
Aside from the Bible verses, no other religeous books in particular that I’m planning to read this month. Blessings to you and your family!
Do you have any Christian documentaries that you would recommend?!
None recently. I have not watched anything Christian yet since Spurgeon.
Sticking to the Word! That’s good! I was really sleepy trying to write a Bible contradiction post last night and didn’t get to yourr blog and your comment on here….but answering you now its beginning to feel like summer in Cali. Have a blessed sleep Kent!

Above all, the Scriptures!! 🙂
I am currently re-reading Hebrews, accompanied by listening to Alistair Begg’s series “Fix Our Eyes on Jesus” I have also downloaded the sermon transcripts. Then I will go through the book of Daniel the same way, using Alistair’s series, “Faith Under Fire”. I frequently hear teaching from Truth for Life that I incorporate for Christian Military Fellowship monthly newsletters.
Thanks for sharing that. Have job thought of posting your newsletter on your blog?
I’ve posted some of the articles, but not the newsletter. Good idea,
My daily readings are based on Ligoniers TableTalk and recent questions have me reading through The Works of Josephus complete and unabridged. Also starting a lesson on the U.S. Constitution available at The American View.com.
Wow that’s a lot on your plate. Josephus isn’t a short reading. How are you enjoying his history so far?
It is along read and small print. May get in touch later. I did start reading All That Is In God by James Dolezal but it is a little above my pay scale. LOL
Psalms and Reflections For Ragamuffins.
What are Ragamuffins? Sounds like a cool title
I still have Andrew Steinmann’s “From Abraham To Paul” (https://www.amazon.com/Abraham-Paul-Biblical-Chronology/dp/0758627998/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2CLZFMXYBRT8E&dchild=1&keywords=from+abraham+to+paul+a+biblical+chronology&qid=1619793814&sprefix=From+Abraham+to+P%2Caps%2C313&sr=8-1) still to read…maybe this coming month will be the time to get into it. 😉
Seems fascinating! Did you get this as a gift or purchased it yourself?
Hi Jim. I bought it myself to supplement my chronological reading plan this year. I can only vaguely remember doing a search for a study of Biblical chronology and this popped up.
Bible wise? We are finishing Luke and Exodus at home. I also saw a review for a book called “How (Not) to Read the Bible” and I’m looking forward to that one!
Just book wise, I’m still finishing up “Wade McClusky and the Battle of Midway” and starting “Mao’s Great Famine” by Frank Dikötter.
Happy reading!
How is the midway book? That is my favorite WW 2 naval battle to read about. Thanks for sharing your reading!
It’s very interesting! It focuses on Wade McClusky, his role in defeating the Japanese fleet, and other biographical aspects. It’s by David Rigby and I would recommend it 🙂

Good conversation starter! I’m reading this post while at work on lunch break. If I were home, I would have copy and pasted the books in my queue. I’m currently working on a book published in the 1920s that blames the assassination of Abraham Lincoln on the Jesuits. I definitely don’t endorse the old worldwide-Jesuit-conspiracy books, but it is interesting that most of the Lincoln conspirators were Roman Catholic.
Did you find this book in the library???? Will you write a review of it??? How is your shift going?
Got it cheap on Kindle. At least they did a decent job transcribing it, unlike a lot of the “classics” in the public domain. Yup, will definitely write a review. It’s actually a fascinating topic. One of the chief conspirators, the son of Mary Surratt (she was one of the four who were hanged), escaped to Canada then England and then to the Vatican with the help of multiple priests. He even served as a guard at the Vatican for a short time. U.S. agents finally caught up with him in Egypt but when he was returned to America he couldn’t be tried because of a legal technicality. Very interesting book despite the hyperbole.
RE: shift
Thanks! Fridays are always exhausting but only 39 minutes to go.
How did your Friday go?
Romans, peter 1&2, and revelations, I would like to read these three simultaneously and interlock the divine nature of what the spirit is leading me to understand 🙂 blessings on all of you on your Revelations from the Lord leading you into the Promised Land, may we all bear much fruit and be overflowing with new wine ready to work the field for the harvest🔥🌾
Jennifer thank you for sharing what you are reading! That’s neat to see multiple books of the BIble you are reading all at once!
Amen.
And amen! Hope the rain is not too humid!
only 110% lol
I used to read lots of books, but recently I’m only interested in reading the Bible. I do like WWI and WWII videos though. 😉
Let me know what documentaries you found online that you recommend!!!!
I finally took the time; it’s a huge topic. I ran out of time but this will get you started. 🙂
Love hearing what others are reading. Good idea to request it.
In addition to Bible studies, most recently Ephesians while listening to Pastor Martyn Lloyd-Jones’s sermons on it, I’m wading into “Things To Come,” by J. Dwight Pentecost. Fairly academic from the start where the author is dealing with the ways of Biblical interpretation before actually starting his interpretation of Revelation. Slow going. Interestingly, I bought the book from a used book store selling on Amazon. It was originally a library book.
L-RD Bless, Keep, Shine. . .
You know that I am a voracious reader. In my Bible reading in May I will cover Deuteronomy and Ezekiel. I will also be reading from Luther’s works and from Francis Schaeffer. My philosophy reading has me tackling Sigmund Freud. And my lighter reading will take me to the end of Mark Twain and then on to Virgil’s Aeneid, Voltaire’s Candide, and the works of Kurt Vonnegut. J.
Studying the Old Testament writings, including available ancient writings which opens the narrative and brings it to life.
I love biographies. Someone suggested the biography of Silvia Tarniceriu. I believe she wrote two books.
Blessings for your weekend.
I have never heard of Silvia Tarniceriu before! Have you read her books before?
I never heard of her or read her books.
After some research I believe she wrote two books. The first one I am going to order is entitled “God Knows My Size!”
Key word, “planning.” 🙄 Not sure I’ll get through them, but I have a copy of “No Ordinary People” that I got for my friend in India to send with the next shipment of my books, since he couldn’t find one in India. It’s an intriguing book with devotionals about unnamed people in the Bible, so I am trying to read it before I send the package. I am in a ladies’ group that is starting a study of “None like Him” by Jen Wilkin on about ten days, and I just got that one. I also borrowed my granddaughter’s book “The Lightning Thief” from the Percy Jackson series. She is really, really into this series and Greek mythology, and after a failed attempt to persuade her to read the Bible instead, I plan to step into her world for a bit (I used to teach Greek mythology when I taught literature) and when this craze has run it’s course, I’m hoping we’ll still have a good rapport and can talk about more meaningful things.
Well, for me that’s a lot to read. I’d better get going. 😉
(And the Bible, duh. 🙄 I’m in Romans, and our Sunday school class is in Genesis.)
well I’m late to this one, so tomorrow is June 1st, I’ll be reading the end of John, and the Acts, Psalms, and Proverbs, lol yes I read with my wife in a Bible in a year ( year 14 ), God Bless Dave
I’m just finishing my saunter through Isaiah. So enjoyed God’s faithfulness to His chosen despite their rejection of Him.
