Given the New Left has made everything political in which there is no neutrality, and that include the personal (see The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self) I thought these seven questions mind be helpful for believers to think about as social media, public education, entertainment and woke corporations swarms people to go with the flow of the trend of being politically woke. I minister to young people in a very liberal part of the US, have done campus ministry even back when I was in the Marines, as a student and also an campus ministry adviser and I see this creep into among believers all the time which affects the individual’s sanctification.
For this post I will list the seven questions and some explanation about the questions.
These are the seven questions:
- Are the truth claims factual?
- Is the wrong done demonstration of sinful partiality/prejudices?
- Does the claim of wrong-doing assume an unbiblical standard of ethics, definition of justice and philosophy of facts?
- If the claim of wrong-doing are factually true, does this prove systematic or institutional oppression versus individual or smaller social units committing these wrongs?
- What is meant by the term “systemic oppression/racism?”
- Is the proposed solution a good solution?
- Does the problem and the solution deny the power of the Gospel?
Explanation of these questions
Are the truth claims factual?
Sometimes there are woke claims that is not based upon actual facts. This can be historical details or details of what happen in current events. For historical examples see my articles Is Christianity a Tool of European Colonialism? or Asians coming to America to benefit from Slavery?, Discussion with a Pastor about US Constitution and 3/5 Compromise and lesson of correcting others, The Improper Use of Theologian Herman Bavinck for a Political Agenda, Antonio Gramsci is not a Marxist? Response to Joel McDurmon and Response to Joel McDurmon: Voddie Baucham’s quote about CRT is not from any school?. With current event knowing how fast rumor spread it is wise we try to collect our cool in general and see what further information comes out more clearly.
Is the wrong done demonstration of sinful partiality/prejudices?
Since this can be quite sensitive I’ll pick something that involves my own ethnic background, to minimize misunderstanding or question of my motive. Right now Asian hate crime is discussed. Sometimes videos go viral and its upsetting. Now there are wrongs clearly done: punching, assault, violence, etc. But there are some incidents that I don’t know if its done because the suspect is motivated by racism. But when I say this I’m not saying there isn’t any racism being done in this particular action nor am I denying that racist attacks have happen in other instances. Nor does it mean I think the assault is somehow not heinous. But I think we need to ask these questions for the purpose of being factual. I’ve seen enough this past year on social media of people of every ethnicity giving a clip of violence and saying look this is a demonstration of the wickedness of this ethnicity because this ethnicity has partiality/prejudice. All the more important we ask this question.
Does the claim of wrong-doing assume an unbiblical standard of ethics, definition of justice and philosophy of facts?
For example some today think that it is wrong to say something is against the Bible or is morally wrong. So there is a wrong view of ethics being assumed. For instance there are those who justify riots from Jesus’ cleansing of the Temple; see my response here: Jesus’ actions at the temple justify the riots?
If the claim of wrong-doing are factually true, does this prove systematic or institutional oppression versus individual or smaller social units committing these wrongs?
Be careful of anecdotal evidences that is used to argue for larger macro claims.
What is meant by the term “systemic oppression/racism?”
Some use the term systematic to refer to an institution. Some to institutions (plural). Some refer to all of society. Some use the term systematic as referring to the fact that something happens frequently. Knowing what people mean helps us not only understand them better but also help all sides to think clearly of what exactly are people claiming and whether the evidence matches the claims.
Is the proposed solution a good solution?
There are times people who are into woke ideology identify a legitimate problem. The next question is if their proposed solution is good. By good I don’t mean whether or not the individuals proposing the solutions is sincere and well-intentioned. I mean the results of their policies. Intentions aren’t the same thing as results, and the history of economics provides us too many examples of it, unfortunately. We must ask this question with thinking also in the back of our mind if there are unintended consequences too with suggested solutions. Our church is located in a community that can get quite rough. Its certainly more poor than some of the neighboring towns. I talked to a neighbor next to the church a few weeks ago who was telling me about the crimes he’s seen and how people are scared. When he was talking it brought back my own memories living in that same city as a kid to parents of a refugee in a run down drug and gang infested apartment next to a government project. He’s a minority and I’m from a different ethnic minority group from him and we don’t support defunding the police not because we are MAGA-hat-flag-waving-Trump-supporting-White-Supremicists-Christian-Nationalists-Q-Anon , but because sometimes there are real evil out there that hurts the community that the police does have actual restraint to these evil.
Does the problem and the solution deny the power of the Gospel?
I think we must watch out for this since the Gospel is what saves people from hell and we shouldn’t see the Gospel denied or downplayed. Sin, problems and difficulties will never be fully crushed this side of eternity (doesn’t mean we don’t try). But the biggest problem man has is eternal. Beware of those who wish to downplay the Gospel. The Gospel also is what changes hearts of people in the present too. Imagine having the resources to change people’s heart from the inside out and only to chuck it away for behavioral modification strategies and politics that uses tools of soft or hard coercion.
Well written post brother! I’m not for defunding the police either because anarchy and lawlessness are not from God.
Any policies that promote lawlessness is dangerous. Then to take away resources for personal liberty to defend oneself makes it even more heinous. I have this post sitting for weeks as a draft as I want to word the seven questions correctly but then I just wrote the explanation all in one sitting just now in rushing to post, overall I hope the explanation makes sense? How’s your day going so far Mandy? Praying for your time with your mom!
It was really well written and nuanced to use your word! It’s a good day God provided Nathan with a new job opportunity that is WAY better than his current job! I am so thankful! How’s your day? Are you doing the couples lesson tonight? Praying for youth tomorrow; I will be fishing with Nathan so not sure if I will be able to make it but for sure will have my prayers!
Right on! Great material!
Thanks! God bless you, appreciate you reading this!
Good questions and answers, especially the last one. It is better to change hearts from the inside out through the Gospel than through coercive behavior modification.
Amen! I’m sadden to see some pastors unable to bring the Gospel to these subjects but they spend all their time with generalized woke talk points that sounds more from CNN than the Bible. And the more they give woke talks and interviews the less I hear the Gospel than how they talked pre-2020. They even post on social media how cool they have platforms…while not talking the Gospel. Sad isn’t it?

Very powerful set of questions. I love the insight. Frank is right about the last one. Excellent.
Blessings.
The battery of questions are helpful.
Great post, brother!!
Thanks for reading this sister!
You make some very good points in this post. Christians need to be very wary of getting pulled into social reactions/movements on either the Left or the Right that are based on anecdotal/isolated incidents and even on hearsay and conspiracy theories. Facts are twisted to fit the political agenda.
Indeed. How was your starting day of work for this week? Hope it wasn’t too hectic?
Thanks, brother. Yesterday was very busy as Fridays usually are, but today should be a bit slower. Have a good prep day.
number 7 says it all Jim
Thank you for these information. Blessings to you and your family!
Thanks for reading this! Hope your Saturday is going well so far?
My Saturday is ok. Praying for yours.
Got to save this for next time I talk to someone woke
Good post, good questions. And I would think that the questions are applicable not only to the New Left but also to the Right. I strongly agree with Frank and that applies to both the Left and the Right. If we applied removing the log from our own eye first, we would see more clearly how to remove the twig from other eyes. The problem being, in far too many cases, we have the blind leading the blind or one can of worms trying desperately to maintain control and dominance over another can of worms. And yes, I am for Law and Order but fair and balanced Law and Order, for all, not just some. Same thing with Justice. Our world is in a sorry state. Blessings.
That’s fair
Excellent!!
Thanks! How did the evangelism go???
Reblogged this on clydeherrin.
Very well done, Jim. Great questions that we really need to be honest about.
Another question that comes to mind is, do we know the ideological origins of “woke-ness”? This is a little more difficult and takes some digging, but when we do, we find that it’s the latest strain in a long philosophical succession: from Hagel, to Marx, and more recently, the Critical Theories and Postmodern philosophy. James Lindsey does a throrough job of tracing this dangerous ideology’s insidious path, going back to 19th century. You can look him up on YouTube or his “New Discourses” podcasts here:
https://newdiscourses.com/
Interestingly, there’s a LOT of pushback from all sectors, Christian, liberal, and conservative. There’s a new documentary coming out called, “The Woke Reformation,” comparing the Woke movement to a religious cult:
https://thewokereformation.locals.com/
You can read about it here:
https://thewokereformation.locals.com/about
Traditional liberals and conservatives of all color in acedemia are now pushing back on this woke cult religion, like Jordan Peterson, Bret Weinstein, Glenn Lowry, John McWhorter, and many others.
Thanks for sharing this. I do see woke as a different strand of ideology than left wing/spectrum classical liberalism. Your comment made me think about how this past year from last May to now I have actually step in to defend liberals from the woke crowd. Almost forgot about that. Not that I’m a liberal but the amount of toxicity in misrepresenting others by some of those who are woke is too much for me to see slander happen, even if it’s directed towards my progressive friends who believe different than me. And the part that concerns me is the mob torches nuances even from liberals as compromises. I think a few of my progressive friends on FB are more willing to converse and hear the other side and my perspective over the long run after sticking up for them though they don’t agree with me but there is civility. Those many names you mentioned does show a wide spectrum of people who are not monolithic in thinking that show serious concerns for the woke crowd. I don’t often point that out enough and thanks for making this point in the comment. Thanks for the links. You’ve probably been thinking through these things pre-2020?
I couldn’t agree with you more, Jim. Traditional liberalism is NOT the same thing as the radical left. I actually wrote a post about how liberals and conversatives should unite to fight against the toxic ideology of the left here:
Liberals may seem like they’re on the other side of us, but they’re not in many ways. They love our country and see things in a more progressive way; the radical left hates our country and are regressive in their neo-Marxist ideology. While I’m not a liberal either, I can find common agree with them in the free market of ideas. This is why we’re seeing my liberals, even atheists, coming together with Christians against the woke. One example is James Lindsey being on Allie Beth Stuckey’s show, “Relatable” [See video here: https://youtu.be/1xhxItXRPf0%5D
Truth.
How is your Saturday so far Maw Maw??
Well said! With so many issues being debated passionately, we MUST keep our priorities straight! As you say, the problems in the world won’t be saved this side of heaven, but the Gospel is for eternity.
Indeed in the end that is what I ultimately want to see is the Gospel going forward and Christians being biblical and not caught up with the power politics that is so prevalent in my generation and younger that goes with the flow of the world and the socialite elites in entertainment and woke corporations. I am seeing pastors tell me that even if they are silent about politics those woke would demand a political statement about race, gender, abortion, socioeconomic issues, because of that mentality that silence is violence. The pressure from the world to go with the flow is huge. Hence these questions must be asked when people come and make claims.

The pure Gospel of Jesus Christ is the most powerful message that ever was and ever shall be. Being saved, having our sins forgiven and our guilt and unrighteousness washed away by the blood of Christ, frees us from all the lies of the evil one and his woke religion. When a Christian knows who he is, he cannot be canceled.

Christians need to wake up and practice biblical discernment
You should see how white leftists are such racists looking down on African immigrants who are Christian, Conservative and successful
Thank you dear brother! You are speaking to my heart tonight.
progressive
Or
christian
Pick one…you cant have it both ways
Bro, I think God want me up to read this, the circumstances are weird. Many family and friends are woke. I totally understand but many times it goes against the truth and I have to speak the truth though it limits my conversations with people, and causes me to separate.. No one wants to talk real, it’s always people, places and things

Helpful strategy.
Leftists commit the fallacy of the theory of causation for their whole worldview. “We see X in Christianity, therefore, Christianity caused X, also Christianity is X.” X can be misogyny, nationalism or racism.
Woke is build on top of 21st century errors of cultural Marxism. It is not apostolic Christianity.
Providentially you are already a biblical person which will help you ward this off.
Embryonic forms of Woke ideology has been around for years, always accompanied by some ridiculous tale that misrepresent history…it is fairly obvious they adopted Marxist reading of History
A high salary doesn’t mean much if the company doesn’t treat you like you should be treated.
Woke ruin everything. Even comedy. Thats because before 2020, you could actually joke about things without offending everyone
YEYYYY!!! … I have read this post multiple times and I am definitely excited to hear your teachings on this even further! Thank you again, so much, for allowing your apologetics thought to be read (online) as it has been more than a blessing for our family- especially since there is SO much worldliness going on within our local churches in our area! I grew up always being a part of a strong church and it was a part of our lives every day of the week. But these days, it is SO hard to find a church that strictly abides by GOD’S laws and for this reason, I feel incredibly blessed to be able to at least share your sermons with my family online. Thank you Pastor, from the bottom of my heart, for speaking on current topics so that we may learn what God’s Word says about these times so we can act accordingly!! 🙏
Social justice looting is one bad fruit of woke ideology. If you think for a minute that Walmart will just eat that loss you are sadly mistaken. It will be pushed on to the consumers! During the holiday season it happens often! 😡
It is ironic that woke elites are smugly enjoying a sense of moral superiority in their ignorance while accusing others of the very same thing
