There’s a lot of discussions of root causes these days in politics, society, etc.
I think the root cause for many ills are spiritual.
Its the lack of thanksgiving to God.
This is what the Bible teaches.
Hear Romans 1:21-27=
For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their reasoning’s, and their senseless hearts were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools, 23 and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures. 24 Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. 25 For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.
Root Cause identified: “For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks,” (v.21a)
The Result of lack of thanksgiving to God we can group here under 5 Cs:
- Cynically foolish: “but they became futile in their reasoning’s, and their senseless hearts were darkened 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools,” (v.21b-22)
- Creatures being worshipped (Idolatry): “and they exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for an image in the form of corruptible mankind, of birds, four-footed animals, and crawling creatures” (v.23)
- Continual unsatisfying sinful desires: “Therefore God gave them up to vile impurity in the lusts of their hearts, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them” (v.24)
- Chained (enslaved) to what one makes as an idol: “For they exchanged the truth of God for falsehood, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen” (v.25)
- Corrupted sexuality: “For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged natural relations for that which is contrary to nature, 27 and likewise the men, too, abandoned natural relations with women and burned in their desire toward one another, males with males committing shameful acts and receiving in their own persons the due penalty of their error.“
When I read Romans 1 I can’t help but to see the state of the world today.
We can feel so hopeless. But one of the most under appreciated means of changing the world is with family and relationships through the church. Start by praying with others with what they are thankful for. Better yet teach thanksgiving biblically; feel free to use my “The Struggle of Thanking God” and add and modify it to make it your own to go over a topical lesson with somebody!
Knowing how serious an unthankful heart is, yet what can we be thankful to God for? Life. Forgiveness from God and more importantly the path to eternal life available by trusting in Jesus Christ! Have you trusted in Jesus as your Savior and Lord? Have you believed in Jesus who died for those who trust in Him, to save them from the penalty they deserve because of their sins? Will you be those who are saved as well, by trusting in Jesus? Thank God we can be saved!

Greetings on this most wonderful day. I am so thankful for you and your ministry. Blessings from mighty King Jesus.

I love the Teaching about thanksgivings, I like the way the Teaching prepared. I like the 5c that are used to demonstrate the unthankful heart
May God have mercy on Us
Thanks for reading this! Wow how did you find this post? May God have mercy, this I pray as I pray for the Gospel to go forwards too!

Such a great remember! Thanks
Thanks JD for reading this and dropping by with a comment! May you have a blessed Thanksgiving!!
Went back to read the linked post band overwhelmed at the truths you lay out so clearly! As you show through Romans 1, the root cause of the downward slide happening today is an unthankful heart. May we always give thanks for all that God has done for us and for His Son, our Savior and Lord. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!
Indeed it is as you summarized it: “ the root cause of the downward slide happening today is an unthankful heart.”. How we should pursue thanksgiving towards God! Do you have family over for Thanksgiving today???
Giving thanks with immediate family today, everyone else is far flung, these days, but grateful for the ways we can keep in touch. Enjoy family time, Jimmy, and may God bless and keep you all! 😀
Saved this! I appreciate these 5cs! I hope it’s ok to say, since today is Thanksgiving, the more/farther we are removed from our food source, farming etc the less dependent on God we become resulting in being less thankful and grateful. I live in a high agricultural part of the US and it grieves me how much we take God for granted with meeting our daily needs in the West. I pray that even when it is hard that I will thank God for His goodness and provision in my life. That I will thank God for salvation, family, friends etc. I am thankful for you, your family and your ministry!!!! Praying for you to share with your mom today!
What you said is so true. I suspect all around the world it is also hard to be an atheist and be a farmer. Atheism is often the privilege of those removed from the reality of seeing the means of how we can survive…excellent observation sister and thanks for sharing this! Are you guys having Thanksgiving meal for lunch or for dinner today???
We are eating very shortly, praise the Lord! I agree there are no atheist farmers!!!! “Atheism is often the privilege of those removed from the reality of seeing the means of how we can survive” well said! 🎯🎯🎯💯💯💯💯 are y’all having duck today?!?!
Amen, Slim. Love that old song, “count your blessings, name then one by one.” Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy thanksgiving! Are you guys going to have thanksgiving you part of the US, or there are restrictions??
LOL! We’re all rebels, Slim, so the whole family will be gathering. Last year though, we all piled into one car, parked down the street, and snuck in the back. I’m laughing about it today, but it was kind of scary, people were actually calling the cops on family gatherings and reporting violators to the health dept.
Thanks for this post! May our (believers) thankfulness to God be evident to unbelievers. It’s sadly ironic that a large number of Americans celebrating Thanksgiving today won’t be giving one thought to God.
“. It’s sadly ironic that a large number of Americans celebrating Thanksgiving today won’t be giving one thought to God.” So true. I hope that won’t be the case as much as humanly possible today with family over for Thanksgiving. I’m hoping to bring in the Gospel especially for my mom who is not a believer (and I’m not sure about my dad’s salvation). Pray for me!
Yes, I’ll be praying!
“Knowing how serious an unthankful heart is, yet what can we be thankful to God for? Life. Forgiveness from God and more importantly the path to eternal life available by trusting in Jesus Christ! ” Amen! No matter the circumstances I can *always* be thankful for eternal life!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Happy thanksgiving to you too! Thanks for always dropping by and reading this post!!
Good reminder that giving thanks is a way to honor God.
Thanks! I needed that reminder too! How was your Thanksgiving?
Brilliant! Happy Thanksgiving! 🍁🦃🍽
Happy Thanksgiving! Hope yesterday went well and today is going well for you sister??
Yes, just been busy searching for gifts. Lol. Jesus is The Gift.
Great post, Jim. Yes, if the only thing God had ever given us was life and salvation, we could praise Him every moment for the rest of our lives, and it wouldn’t be enough. (Good thing we have eternity. 😉 )
So true. Amen. Your comment reminded me of a video someone shared from Justin Peters where he explain this year he’s thankful for “nothing.” But when he unpacked it, it was the Gospel! The Gospel is sooo amazing amen???
Powerful witness to the role of Scripture-based gratitude. With thanksgiving, we acknowledge the blessings bestowed by God’s grace.
Amen!! How did your thanksgiving went brother?
My wife and I were dogsitting during the entire Thanksgiving week for our younger daughter. On Thanksgiving Day, we shared a blessed time with our older daughter and her family. Both daughters live in the Columbus area. Jim, I hope you and your family enjoyed some special blessings as well.
GREAT lesson and oh so true!! 👍💗✝📖🕊😇
