For this Sunday here’s what you can do: Talk to your kids what the Lord’s Supper Mean.
For our upcoming Lord’s Day today we will be doing Communion. I don’t know if your church is doing communion or not for this Sunday. If your church is doing it this Lord’s Day then this would be a great opportunity to talk to your kids what that means. Even if there’s no Lord’s Summer in your church still it is worthwhile to talk about to talk to your own children about what the Lord’s Supper means.
Matthew 26:26-28 states “Now while they were eating, Jesus took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is My body.” 27 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you; 28 for this is My blood of the covenant, which is being poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.”
I love that passage. Jesus speaks here and instituted the Lord’s Supper for the Church. For you and for I. It is something done which we should thank God (v.27). It is something that shows Christ has died for sins. It preaches the Gospel to us, that Christ’s work on the Cross can forgive our sins. Oh the precious blood of Christ!
If you church is doing Communion today, you tell your children how you are thankful for the Lord’s Supper; and more than that you are thankful for the Gospel. Communion points to the Gospel. Talk to them about God saves those who trust in Him!
Some additional pointers for talking to your child about this subject:
- Ask the child questions of what he or she have seen and observed with Communion in the past at church. Look for things to engage the child with the conversation.
- Ask them what the child understand communion is. Encourage the child when they are correct with what they do know. If there are a child said they say that are incorrect guide them to what is the biblical view.
- Explain what is the Lord’s supper in simple terms.
- Even after you explain things to your child ask the child what they learned; this feedback helps reinforce the lesson and also check for any possible misunderstanding.
- Ask them if the child if he or she have any questions about communion. Sometimes a child might even ask difficult questions. Tell the child you will research on it. This let the kid know you are learning too: That’s what a disciple of Jesus is, a constant student of God’s Word. Ask your pastors; read also books on the Lord’s Supper. Books I recommend include Review: The Lord’s Supper as the Sign and Meal of the New Covenant and Review: Spreading the Feast: Instruction and Meditations for Ministry at the Lord’s Table by Howard Griffith.
Our church has communion the last Sunday of the month. I will keep these questions in my to discuss with the children I know at church! I am still thinking what you said last weekend about some churches allowing young children to participate in communion. How important it is that we teach our children that communion brings judgment upon ourselves when not taken appropriately. Thanks for this word of encouragement!! Prayers for your sermon!
Thanks for reading this! Wow did you sleep? It seems many churches in LA area I know take communion the first of the month; is there a reason they have it last of the month for communin?
A good point Jim; we must teach and prepare children for the day when they are old enough to participate in the Lord’s Supper.
Amen. How did your Sunday go sir?
Hi Jim, I am in isolation due to covid in my house, Susan is positive but Samuel and I are negative for now.
Hope your Lord’s Day service blesses you and others brother.

Some great pointers and questions here. Thank you
Another great Sunday encouragement. Thank you brother Jim.
Thanks Crissy. How did your Lord’s Day go sister?
Was a good day. More brethren are returning to church, which is good.
Hope you had a blessed day of ministry .
I think what Communion means is confusing even for adults, but it is good to talk to one’s children about what goes on in Church. And it is good to be thankful for all of it.
Well stated Frank; you are right there can be theological disagreements about it even for mature Christian adults. How goes your Lord’s day?
Great suggestion. It is important for parents to provide core biblical understanding at home.
Blessings.

Good post Pastor on this essential practice. I believe that even the word ‘Communion’ connotes fellowship, not just with the Lord but each other.
I try to remember that the early Christians didn’t pass out a wafer or cracker but had a whole meal together. We can still do this, with Christ in our hearts, at the head of the table.
Not sure how churches could do this but I think it would serve to strengthen the bond of love that Jesus so wanted for His body here, while exalting and honoring Him.
What do you think?
I agree about communion being a communion for believers and with God. It also seems to be a big deal for the church in the New Testament, with a possible love feast so people didn’t see communion as food and miss the meaning of it. I miss our church’s love feast/potluck that we once had before Covid. But these days people don’t stay long after service like we once had vibrantly before the pandemic. And this isn’t fully blaming people since we have a lot of old people and medical professionals who work in hospitals, that can be a dangerous mix. I try to remind people during the week about communion to at least highlight it’s importance. Let me know any further thoughts!!!
Yes, potlucks and luncheons can really strengthen fellowship. When I had (small) home Bible study I tried to have Communion meal, starting with bread and wine/juice and then food. Not sure if that’s how the first church did it but we liked it!
Being a pastor must be so challenging! Do you have a Communion ministry?
I know my thoughts are probably not realistic for a whole church but I thought I’d share them.
Always good to comment/hear from you Pastor SlimJim!
A good exhortation, Pastor! I know a lot of parents “assume” their children are picking up on the activities at church, but that is expecting too much.
Good point that can easily be assumed but parents must be intentional to talk about spiritual matters! How goes your shift today? Praying it goes well
RE: shift
Thanks! It was a slow day, lots of piddly jobs. The company is having a hard time getting parts like a lot of businesses currently and may consider furloughing employees.
Hope you’re having a good Sunday!
Amen. Thank you.
Blessings to you. Hope your Sunday is a blessing in many ways Bonnie! Hope your blog get some views and hits today!
Me too. Thank you, GRand.
If Parents at church did this more we see more of the next generation still following God
Especially with parents sharing the Gospel
Great counsel. We need to be more proactive in teaching our children the doctrines of the faith, engaging them to help them rightly understand what the Bible teaches.
Amen! We need to proactively teach them doctrines that’s from the Word. Curious brother if you yourself subscribe to any confessions of faith (London Baptist, etc), are more Calvinistic Dispensationalist, etc, ?
1853 New Hampshire Confession of Faith. I am more Calvinistic in my theology. I love the confessions. They help to put our theology in a more systematic outline, if you will, for better comprehension.
Our church have communion every first Sunday in the month. When my children were teens and we were going through some tremendous trials I used to have communion with them every Sunday after dinner. I believe it kept us grounded in the Lord.
Thanks for sharing that; what a testimony of God’s grace and also your faithfulness as a mom! Beverley can you check if some of my comments entered your spam filter? I think I commented too fast and WordPress thinks I’m spamming you
Okay. I will check.
This is an excellent way to share with kids!
Good idea 💞💞 I agree with you on this…
