For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Did Moses fear the king?
Here are the answers which the skeptic believes indicate a Bible contradiction:
Moses feared the king.
“But he said, “Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? Do you intend to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid and said, “Surely the matter has become known!” 15 When Pharaoh heard about this matter, he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from the presence of Pharaoh and settled in the land of Midian, and he sat down by a well.“ (Exodus 2:14-15)
Moses did not fear the king.
“By faith he left Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he persevered, as though seeing Him who is unseen.” (Hebrews 11:27)
(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)
Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:
- When dealing with skeptics’ claim of Bible contradictions it seems one can never be reminded enough of what exactly is a contradiction. A contradiction occurs when two or more claims conflict with one another so that they cannot simultaneously be true in the same sense and at the same time. To put it another way, a Bible contradiction exists when there are claims within the Bible that are mutually exclusive in the same sense and at the same time.
- One should be skeptical of whether this is a Bible contradiction given the Skeptic Annotated Bible’s track record of inaccurately handling the Bible. See the many examples of their error which we have responded to in this post: Collection of Posts Responding to Bible Contradictions. Of course that does not take away the need to respond to this claim of a contradiction, which is what the remainder of this post will do. But this observation should caution us to slow down and look more closely at the passages cited by the Skeptic Annotated Bible to see if they interpreted the passages properly to support their conclusion that it is a Bible contradiction.
- The skeptic tries to pit Exodus 2:14-15 as affirming the claim “Moses feared the king” against Hebrews 11:27 as affirming “Moses did not feared the king.”
- The skeptic rightly interpret Exodus 2:14-15 as affirming the claim “Moses feared the king.” Verse 14 states Moses was afraid. Verse 15 then said he fled the king.
- The skeptic rightly interpret Hebrews 11:27 as affirming “Moses did not feared the king.” It directly states “not fearing the wrath of the king.”
- Still both of these verses are not contradicting. They are two different time period when Moses feared and did not fear the king.
- Exodus 2:14-15 was before Moses fled from Egypt the first time and during that time “Moses feared the king.”
- Hebrews 11:27 I take it as after forty years later when Moses was leading the Hebrews out of Egypt.
- Note “he persevered” instead of him leaving in despair.
- Note this instance Moses was focused on God: “as though seeing Him who is unseen“
- There is no contradiction here. Seems the skeptic needs to learn of How to Handle Bible Contradictions.
- We shouldn’t miss that worldviews are at play even with the skeptic’s objection to Christianity. The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview. Check out our post “Skeptic Annotated Bible Author’s Self-Defeating Worldview.”
Oh my goodness Jim, I really fear for the writers of the skeptic bible. This is clearly seen as not a Contradiction and being two different time periods, even by non-scholars like myself. It has a bit of desperation about it in my point of view as they grasp at straws on this issue. God bless you brother for highlighting such things brother.
Alan it’s unfortunate that the skeptics twists the Word like this. Sometimes I wonder if the author Steve Wells actually knows some of these aren’t contradictions but he wrote them on his book and website anyways to make it look like the Bible has many problems and many errors. It’s slanderous. Man we should pray for Steve Wells to repent and I fear it be too late for him as he’s getting very old in age! I see how Twitter is littered with people copy and paste of his contradiction lists word for word and I can’t imagine the judgment! Let us pray amen?
Absolutely brother. Age isn’t a barrier, our Almighty God can turn anyone around at any stage of their life. It isn’t over until he breathes his last breath. 🙏
Not only the time frame, but the context of the word “fear.” Being “afraid” is an emotion, and Moses acted on that emotion earlier when he fled, and years later when God told him to go back to Egypt. After giving one excuse after another, he finally blurted out, “Send someone else!”
But, as we’re discussing in a book study, fear as in “fear of God” is a motivator. We can feel afraid of something, but if we fear (respect and give priority to) God more, we will obey Him in the face of our fear(being afraid).
This true courage. Just not being scared of something can be just plain foolish.
So, however Moses may have FELT, he put God above Pharaoh and obeyed Him.
(I pray I will be that way. However much something may scare me, I hope I will always be more afraid of disobeying God.)
That is awesome you prayed for that. I pray for that too: courage. Sometimes we can’t remove totally the absence of fear but we gotta do the right thing even with the midst of fear. Thanks for your comment sister. Hope your week thus far has been Spirit filled!
Thank you, Jimmy. It has. I’ve enjoyed some times of singing with my daughter harmonizing, and the Lord inhabits the praises of His children. 😊💕
As soon as I saw this I said to myself, “ah, different time period!!!!!” I am thankful this was not a difficult one for you to refute! While the skeptic may think he is doing well in this life now, when he stands before God and looks back on his life, he will see how wrong and foolish he was now. I would much rather be like Moses who fled in fear but at the end of my life, I am said to be a woman who feared God and ran to Him. Thank you for your faithfulness in refuting these non-contradictions!
This is truth that you stated: “ when he stands before God and looks back on his life, he will see how wrong and foolish he was now.”. Sobering really! I think that day is coming closer each week as I tackle this. Last week’s post was shared by a brother in Christ on Twitter and it attracted so many atheists and blasphemers on Twitter with low grade attacks. We even had atheists copy and paste from Steve Wells site word for word! I fear how much wrath Wells will face if he doesn’t repent of his sins and come to trust in Christ! Praying still for your health and doctors analysis of what’s going on. I know today is also class day for you too and I am praying for that. How goes your day so far sister??
Have you received any criticism on social media for this non contradiction?! I appreciate how you are not afraid to engage culture!!!!! I haven’t heard about my tests so I am assuming that no news is good news. I will call them tomorrow! Wells is the definition of the unbelief you taught on Tuesday, so sad! How are you doing today?! Thank you so much for your prayers!!!!
Excellent insight. Of course, it was at separate times. Seems to be a frequent mistake of the skeptic.
Shalom!

Thanks for dissecting this limp allegation. As we’ve seen before, Steve/Stephen Wells completely ignores chronology in an attempt to amass another “contradiction.”
It seems if there’s a theme throughout this adventure refuting alleged Bible contradictions is that chronology matters! And matters big time!! The lack of attention to details by Steve Wells is rather embarrassing and it saddens me to see how many of the Twitter atheist crowd last week attacked one of my Bible contradictions posts that another brother shared. It’s like Steve Wells is bad but his “disciples” who literally copy and paste from the skeptic annotated Bible is twice as bad as Wells with knowing the Bible! I fear the judgment Wells will face for his slander of the Bible. I pray he repents and trust in Jesus before it’s too late! Strangely I feel I see a parallel between Wells and Kreeft with how shallow their arguments are…
RE: I see a parallel between Wells and Kreeft with how shallow their arguments are
For sure. Kreeft is “shooting from the hip” and Wells is “grasping at straws.” The argumentation from both is pitifully weak.
How does Thursday look for you?

What a cool sounding phrase “Act of Errorism”
Point 6 makes it clear that this is not a contradiction: “They are two different time period when Moses feared and did not fear the king.”
Exactly. Appreciate you highlighting point 6, that’s what it boils down to. Blessings to you with all you do for the Lord today but online and offline Frank!

Context: Moses feard God.
Moses feared God indeed. How can I pray for you today?
Pray for salvation of grandchildren.:)
Another easy one and the hardcover of this book sells on Amazon for 34.99? I was unable to find out how many of these have been sold but I didn’t dive too deep to find out. It is probably 10 times more than I imagine because books like this seem to sell well. So many want the Bible to be untrue to justify unrepentant behavior (and other very bad reasons).
Thanks for sharing, Pastor Jim.
I can’t believe how popular the book is; considering how juvenile it is. And to be popular for so many years. Its unbelievable. Have you seen the site also? Its so juvenile. Writing these posts seems to have given a steady stream of people finding this blog looking for answers to the skeptics; I pray that this would help evangelize nonbelievers and also equip believers for God’s glory sake. I’m praying for God to use this and hope every week I have the energy and wisdom to thoroughly refute each one!
Thanks for letting me know about the site, Pastor Jim. I looked it up and saw his 17 categories. Wow, this guy really seems to hate God.
I’m glad you are getting traffic to these posts. People need to see how ridiculous these claims are. I will keep you in my prayers as you work through this anti-God babble.
God’s blessings…
I just saw this on the SAB site, Pastor Jim:
“There is not a single good idea in the entire Bible that is taught consistently throughout.”
This statement is so wrong on so many levels.
Has this guy even read the Bible in a thorough way?
In John 5:39 Jesus says:
“You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,”
Most good theologians would say that Jesus is the center of the Bible, the main thread that reaches from cover to cover. He is the “greatest single good idea.”
Sadly, books like this, designed to tear down what God has built, have been and will always be around and even more sad is that they can be popular.
I will pray with you that God will give you wisdom in answering these ungodly statements.

Well-researched! The differences in Scripture also show the maturity of faith in Moses for God.
Well put! We see from this passage a spiritual maturity of Moses, and not an issue of a contradiction. Thanks brother for reading this post! I do enjoy researching and writing these posts answering the skeptics as they have grown my faith seeing details in God’s word I didn’t see before if it wasn’t for looking up these alleged Bible contradictions. Hope you are doing well!!
Peace be with you in your faithful journey with God’s Word. Life is finding some familiar turf.
Blessings to you this Saturday and weekend!
Only the gullible would be impressed with online atheists twisting the Word of God
Of course a different time period ! Moses feared the king because his faith was weak. Not so later. Great work pastor Jim.
Indeed! I am glad you read this. Praying for you to have a blessed upcoming week with God’s presence and also to be used by God to minister and witness to others! Hope your Lord’s Day which is nearly done, went well!!
Amen! Thank you for your prayer.
My Lord’s day was different I had to stay home.
The Lord bless you and your family and keep you safe.
