Point: What do you say when someone say a Christian defense of the faith at a worldview level is circular? This is brought up often as an objection to Presuppositional Apologetics.
Picture: I find electrical circuits fascinating:
There’s a sense in which a circuit if it works is “circular” in some ways. Or another way to say it is a closed system. With a rational worldview one hallmark is that it is a coherent system. That is, a rational worldview has a theory of knowledge (epistemology) that supports a worldview’s view of reality (metaphysics). And knowledge needs to be justified by norms so one’s epistemology also needs a view of ethics that supports one’s epistemology if such a worldview is rational.
We can illustrate the elements of a worldview of epistemology, ethics and metaphysics as “switches” in a circuit:
A rational worldview would have mutually reinforcing epistemology, metaphysics and ethics. For a worldview to to work these three dimensions must not be short-circuited with any of these dimensions that does not follow/connect.
POSSIBLE SCENARIO FOR EMPLOYING THIS ILLUSTRATION DURING APOLOGETIC EVANGELISM
NON-CHRISTIAN: I think your apologetics is circular.
CHRISTIAN: There’s a difference between vicious circularlity and virtuous circularity.
NON-CHRISTIAN: What? What do you mean?
CHRISTIAN: I’m not giving you an argument of a fallacious circularity or even a simplistic circularity. But at the level of worldviews all worldviews are circular; its the question whether they are cogent and secondly if the worldview account for intelligibility and meaningfulness. By the way what do you know about electric circuits?
NON-CHRISTIAN: I know something about it.
CHRISTIAN: Perfect! [Insert illustration]. Now do you think someone that point out the lack of connection of a bad worldview’s inability to have epistemology, metaphysics and ethics connect, is a rational endeavor? That is, do you think it is rational to argue that a worldview is problematic when a worldview’s epistemology provides the self-defeater to its metaphysics, and vice versa, that its ethics undermine its view of knowledge, and its view of metaphysics makes it impossible to have norms for ethics, etc?
NON-CHRISTIAN: Yes.
CHRISTIAN: If so you do believe there is such a thing as a cogent worldview, that is a closed system like a circuit, and that’s one hallmark of rationality at the worldview level.
I really like this analogy!
Thanks Craig! Glad you liked it! Hope you have a blessed day today sir!
Excellent analogy brother. Love it!
Very good analogy using the electric circuit connecting epistemology, metaphysics and ethics. Also good description of “circular” reasoning as being a “closed system”. All worldviews are circular in this way, however, some are cogent and some aren’t.
Frank, beautifully said and summarized of what I was trying to say! Thanks for this summary, I hope that helps anyone who might have a hard time with this post! Frank I pray you have a blessed week this week!
Excellent analogy! An atheistic worldview must leap over origins and morality.
Thanks! It seems the atheist takes out the battery altogether! How is your recovery day going???
RE: recovery day
Both my wife and I had scheduled MD visits this morning, but I’m laying low after that. Really whipped from the weekend.
How is your “couch day” starting out?
Wow, this is really good.
Thanks! I am going to expand on this analogy to teach about what is a worldview tomorrow! Been thinking about this for weeks how do I explain with an analogy about worldviews and dimensions of a worldview. Hope you can join in tomorrow! Only if you can 🙂
I will be there, brother!!!!
I loved this analogy. Interesting video. Saved for future reference.
Thanks! Appreciate you did enjoyed this analogy! I’ll be using analogy for tonight’s apologetics lesson of what is a worldview. How are you?
I am doing well, thank you for asking. A lot of things happening as the Lord leads. Can I ask for prayer for my friend Isabel? She is in a desperate situation with her suicidal son. She of the Catholic faith. I witness to her last night . Thank you pastor Jim. Anything I can pray for you?
Reblogged this on My Logos Word.
Excellent I never thought of worldview circularity in that way before
This is a compelling illustration

Thanks brother! I was trying to think about how can I illustrate a way to convey not all circularity is a problem…took a while before this dawn on me! Grateful for His illumination! Or application analogy…
I appreciate it. We are led to believe that circular reasoning is always fallible, but that illustration so simply destroyed that illogical and dishonest reasoning.
Creative application of the circuit board to apologetics

Illustration 75 and this one were good explanations of worldview apologetics
Why didn’t I think of this before

Won’t see circuits the same way after this
