I was always curious about the church’s interpretation of various Old Testament prophecies of Christ, especially among sound Gospel preachers, do you have the same curiosity too? If so this work might be for you! This is actually an issue from the Free Grace Broadcaster for Spring 2022. I have been receiving different issues from them since I order booklets of famous old preachers and teachers such as Charles Spurgeon but this is the first time I read one of the Free Grace Broadcaster since the topic of Messianic Prophecies fascinated me. My soul was fed reading this, like how my soul delights with reading sound Christians preachers from previous centuries with the combination of my fascination with Messianic prophecies which made this read a savoring spiritual delight!
There are twelve essays that this issue shared. They include writings from famous Christian writers and teachers such as J.C. Ryle, Charles Spurgeon, George Whitefield, John Calvin and Matthew Henry. Among the contributors both Spurgeon and George Whitefield has two articles. The articles start with Genesis as the focus and ends with Malachi in the second to last essay with the final one by Spurgeon on the topic of Jesus teaching on the Emmaus Road. I love that, given this a “biblical theology” feel. Obviously not every Old Testament verses was covered but I love the surveys of collection of Protestant meditations upon Messianic prophecies. I hope that Chapel Library would have a part two since this was so good!
My favorite was Jonathan Edwards’ “Christ’s Suffering Prophesied.” He gives readers a listing of Messianic prophecies grouped by events of Jesus’ last hours with the accompanying passages. Love that! I also enjoyed Matthew Henry’s discussion of the prophecy in Isaiah 42:1-4 in the essay titled “Christ the Elect Servant.” It was expository with a clear outline based upon the text; neat to see expository preaching isn’t new! Both of Whitefield’s sermons were also good, with the first on Genesis 22 as a type pointing to Christ and the second was focused on Jeremiah 23:6. I love Genesis 22 and it blew my mind thinking of how some of Whitefield’s observation of the Genesis 22 are observations I have noticed and preached about and Whitefield notices these things in the 1700s, some three hundred years ago. God’s Word is timeless! Whitefield’s sermon on Jeremiah 23:6 is driven by the text and context of Jeremiah 23:5 and I love how he concludes with an appeal to listeners to trust in Christ and the Gospel to save them from the wrath of God; one can see how God uses Whitefield with revivals with his focus on the Gospel. I want to read more of Whitefield now.
Overall I recommend it and I hope and pray to see more of this topic from Chapel Library!
Good morning brother. Thanks for the great resource. Love this topic.
Shalom!
This will be a fruitful read I am sure. Thank you brother Jim.
It was a fruitful read! Blessings to you brother may today be a day to love Christ more for you!
Thanks for the review! Sounds like good stuff! I love OT types and Messianic prophecies.
I’m glad you like OT predictions of Christ! I know we talked about it in the comments and wrote posts and reviews on this topic! Such a marvel, I feel Messianic predictions are way too under rated in apologetics! I rather have some one interested in apologetics be good with Old Testament scriptures than Aquinas philosophy, I think you would too?
Ach. The popularity of Aquinas (and G.K. Chesterton and Mother Teresa) among some evangelicals is so wrong.
That looks like an interesting collection of essays. Such collections give one an opportunity to see how different authors approach a particular topic.
Yes you are right the different authors shows us different guys approach (not always a bad thing) and yet the approach is still within the range of being biblical Christians. I am grateful you love the Jewish Old Testament Frank! Hope your day is well brother!!
Thanks for sharing, Pastor Jim. I will definitely check this out!
Thanks for checking it out brother Chris!! Blessings to you, I know you love the Old Testament!!!
I do indeed, Pastor Jim!
Thank you for sharing this.
Those old timers had something we should walk in too.
There was such power during their days.
Revival ,miracles etc
Amen we can learn a lot from saints before us! God has used them for spiritual revivals! Amen and amen brother!!!
Precisely
Excellent. Amen.
Thanks Maw Maw, God bless your day today Bonnie!!!
I love this topic, Jimmy! My favorite chapter of the Old Testament is Isaiah 53, a detailed description of Jesus’s atoning death and resurrection. I have asked some Jewish people who they think Isaiah was writing about, and I have never received an answer that fits. Usually, I get no answer at all. If I had to pick one OT chapter to prove the gospel, that would be the one.
I love Isaiah 53! I’ve asked Jewish folks in my campus evangelism ministry before Covid era to read it aloud and tell me who it is. And there were people who honestly said Jesus. It’s amazing prophecy! Do you have a second favorite Messianic Prophecy
Probably the one in Micah 5:2, because being born in Bethlehem wasn’t something Jesus could deliberately do to fulfill prophecy – unless He was God, which He was, and is. Bethlehem is so small among so many cities, towns, and villages, it’s a really, really specific prophecy – like saying the next President of the United States is someone born in Onekama, Michigan.

Thank you, Jim. I wish all Christians would subscribe at Chapel Library for this free periodical and other literature. FGB has been a blessing to me for over 25 years. Blessings to you as you continue to share the gospel.
Wow you have been reading them for 25 years! This is my first that I read! Any issue stood out to you? I’m glad you commented and encouraged the saints to read this!!! Blessings to you Fran!
I can’t remember one in particular. I would have to look back in my files. They are always good, covering new topics every other month from the Puritans, the Reformers and theologians. You can get former copies. I hate to throw them away. They are priceless. I hope my children and grandchildren will read them.
Thank you Pastor Jim for sharing. Some of my most meaningful devotions with God’s Word come out of reading from these distinguished speakers from the pulpit. God’s peace and mercy reaches out from each one.
“ Some of my most meaningful devotions with God’s Word come out of reading from these distinguished speakers from the pulpit.”. Praise God! And I imagine some of your readings you turned into blog posts?
