For this Sunday here’s what you can do: Express praise if your Church teach from the Old Testament.
I think most churches on Sunday would be teaching on the New Testament. That’s good. But we must not forget that the Old Testament is also the Word of God.
And the Old Testament is often the foundation for our understanding in the New Testament. So Christians learning about the Old Testament is important.
After all a big portion of the Bible itself is the Old Testament. 23,145 of the 31,102 verses in the Bible is Old Testament. Or to think of it another way: 929 chapters of the 1,189 total chapters in the Bible is Old Testament. Or more simply: 39 Books of the 66 Books in the Bible is the Old Testament. To never preach and teach the Old Testament is depriving Christians of the wealth and riches of God’s Word.
Yet teaching and preaching through the Old Testament is not easy. So more reasons to be thankful to God if your teach teaches through the Old Testament whether on Sunday sermon during service or during Sunday School. Or even Children Sunday school!
Encourage those who are teaching from the Old Testament. Thank them. Tell them to keep on doing it and pray for them to do it well.
Blessings!

You will find a great deal of the Old Testament within the New Testament.
“…many erroneously believe the four gospels, starting with Matthew chapter one, initiates the chronicle of the New Testament. Although each of the gospels is considered New Testament, the majority of each gospel is under the jurisdiction of Old Testament law. Thus, the New Testament does not commence until Christ’s resurrection. “And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is of force after men are dead; otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth” (Heb. 9:15–17). So, most who may have considered the Old Testament as not applicable to modern times must now re-evaluate that belief.”
From chapter 5 “Israel, Rapture, Tribulation” by Michael Earl Riemer
Good stuff from your book!

I agree wholeheartedly! I am preaching through 1 Samuel right now. What a treasure, actually lots of treasures, are found in this book. So much for us to learn.
That is awesome! I just prayed the People are blessed by your preaching!
Good reminder that the Old Testament is also the Word of God.
Thanks Frank; have a blessed day
With the Old Testament we would be lost as the New quotes much of it.
Amen! The OT is the foundation!!!! A very important foundation amen?

I confess I too often neglect the OT in favor of the NT. Most times, when I do explore it, it is to find the larger contexts of NT quotes from the OT.
Same here; been trying to be intentional in looking at the OT! I mean same as you with needing to be in OT not that I’m as skilled with the NT as you are which is so encouraging on my end to see from you ✝️😎
Well, I wouldn’t go that far, Pastor Jim!
Good exhortation! The New Testament is even more of a blessing to read when we understand it as a fulfillment of the Old Testament.
Amen! It’s incredible how much OT quotations there are in the OT; nothing like it compared to the Apocrypha being quoted in the NT, amiright? (haha had to go there).
Don’t get me going! 🧐 Yeah, RCs insist there are many quotes from the Apocrypha in the NT but the “evidence” they produce are all generalities.
…also, I wanted to acknowledge the speaker in your presup video from yesterday who called out Andy Stanley for wanting to “unhitch” from the Old Testament. So wrong.
This does my heart good!!!! This year our Sunday school class is doing a survey of the OT. Our senior pastor is on sabbatical until the beginning of September and the next few weeks the preaching will be from Job. I don’t know how we can ignore almost 68% of anything and think that we have an understanding of a text. 66% of the Bible is Hebrew almost 2% is Aramaic, this is significant in my opinion. Jesus loved the OT; how Pastors and teachers can ignore this today is a travesty. (It is also a travesty the prosperity gospel Scripture twisting OT blessings.) I am thankful for any church who preaches and teaches the whole council of God. I am thankful for your faithfulnesses and diligence in loving and studying Scripture!!!
When I finished this post I thought about you! Thanks for being the OT scholar!
Amen sister, I totally agree!
Totally agree. The Old Testament is very important. It is the foundation for the New Testament. I hope you will have a great week in the Lord.
Amen OT is so foundational! Have a blessed Week Beverley!
Thank you. You also.
Blue Collar Theologian states: “Jesus loved the Old Testament”
True, but it was not Old Testament when He lived! It only became the OT after He died. The early Christian Church only had the OT to read, for the New Testament hadn’t been written yet! The book of Acts was written about thirty years after the death of Christ. And the gospels were also written at least a few years after Christs’ death, as were all the epistles. It was at least two years after the Day of Pentecost before Paul was converted. And probably years before he went on his four-missionary journeys, and founded the church congregations in the cities of Philippi, Colosse, Corinth, and other cities and places. Consider this.
“And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scripture” (Acts 17:2). What scripture was Paul using? What we call the OT. “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11). What scriptures were they searching daily? What scriptures did they diligently study? The early church grew and prospered greatly, only having the OT as the written word of God.
Maybe part of the reason so many churches seem to lack fire and energy, their diet is nutrient deficient. They lack the nutrients which can only be supplied by the spiritual food, that is found by reading and studying the Old Testament.
Goid points here brother and good comments too.
I must say that the compromised apostate church neglects/downright rejects the OT to avoid the revelation of God as fierce, avenging, holy and just.
As a result, they lack the fear of God, the very passion that humbles us, opens up wisdom and keeps us from sin.
So much to say but I’ll leave it here.
Press on pastor!
So true! I began preaching on Zachariah; and it opens up with the anger of God against Sin something apostate and compromising churches do not like! How was your Sunday???
Oh, I didn’t make the Zoom in but Bob did. We’ve been at my parents, last week was my dad’s 90th surprise birthday party! Turned out so good.
Amen! Blessings, Pastor Jim!
And amen Cindy, I hope your Son Day yesterday was blessed!!
It was! God encouraged me through my Pastor’s message. Blessings, Pastor Jim!
Praise God Cindy
Our Gospel-centered church has concluded recent sermon series from Jonah as well as the Ten Commandments from Exodus.
What a great reminder SlimJim, the Old Testament is full of so much biblical insight ☺️.
