What does the Bible have to say about fatherhood and also what are the insights of various historic Protestant preachers and pastors have from the Bible on fatherhood? This booklet is a great resource for that. It was originally an issue from the Free Grace Broadcaster from 2014 but the truth found in its pages is timeless. There’s various compiled writings from John Calvin, A.W Pink, Richard Baxter, William Gurnall and Thomas Watson. This is my second Free Grace Broadcaster I read. The earlier one I read was on Messianic Prophecies. Like the first one this particular booklet too was a spiritual delight!
There are ten articles in this work. The first one is on how the father is a prophet, king and priest. The second essay is on the responsibilities and privileges on fatherhood while the next is on a father’s main responsibility. Article number four covers the topic of leading a family four Christ which is followed by an essay on a father must be godly. Then it is an article on fathers teaching God’s Word and prayer with the next one on fathers disciplining their children. The next is titled “How Fathers can provoke their children to wrath” which is trailed by an essay on reforming fathers and the last piece being “A Father’s Prayer.”
I really enjoyed the fourth essay by Richard Baxter especially the part when he laid out how to cultivate a father’s authority. I thought it was practical and shows biblical principles that foster a family climate that loves God and submission to the father’s role as a family leader. The essay on how father can provoke their children to wrath was also insightful and helpful with giving readers a checklist of heart checks for fathers to avoid exasperating our children. This really was a good balance to the articles that mentioned the father’s role in leading and teaching and disciplining children.
Overall this was God exalting, practical and biblical in its exhortation. The publisher Chapel Library really did a good job compiling great short essays and excerpts. I felt my soul was fed and reading this renewed my prayers for my own parenting and also for my children to be raised up in the things of God and for them to know the Lord. I think those are good fruits from this booklet. I recommend this for fathers both new fathers and older fathers.
Great topic. Thanks for the resource.
Shalom!

Thank you, Jim. I have a stash of Free Grace Broadcaster from 20 years. They are free from Chapel Library but “priceless.” You won’t find free literature anywhere else like this. For those who don’t know, go to chapellibrary.com and check all their resources. Blessings as you are preparing for your teaching abroad.
