Want something short to read while also being helpful concerning family Bible studies and family worship? I recommend this booklet fom Chapel Library! This is written by J. H. Merle d’Aubigne. Sadly I did not who he was until I got this from Chapel Library. J. H. Merle d’Aubigne was a Swiss pastor and historian of the Reformation who lived from 1794-1872 and from what I can tell online he is most famous for his History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century. For someone that could write serious history the author was also gifted to write practically and simply making this a highly recommended resource!
This booklet is divided into four section. The first section is on the history of Family Worship. I thought that was neat and certainly we see a bit of the historian side of the author! The next section gives us five motives for doing family worship which is followed by the next section on practical directions for family worship. The final part is the conclusion.
I love how this was laid out. He shared the motivations before the practical directions. I find the older I get as a preacher the more important it is to address motivation for godly duties. I suppose we see the author is a seasoned saint who understands people. The five motivations are God centered and something that some readers today might find is his fifth reason which is to do family worship to influence society. In an age of much antinomianism people can question that and while the result is up to God still historically God has used Christians to impact society. The historical discussion was also refreshing though I wish it was longer! The practical directions is something I can spend a long time talking about but I think it is suffice to say the booklet is worth reading! One thing that stood out to me was the author’s awareness to be flexible with how family worship is done. I love that and agree wholeheartedly!
Recommended! It is worth getting and reading!
Thanks for the great resource. I look forward to it.
Shalom!
Thanks for pointing to a central topic for today.

Yes thank you 🥰
It is good to read the Bible and worship as a family. We keep our families close to us.
Amen it is an important topic to read about. I hope you are doing well!!
Thanks for the good review! This brings to mind that parents shouldn’t limit worship to church, but should acknowledge God in all aspects of life to/with their children.
Amen worship and honoring God is in all of life! This was the most clear, simple and practical of all the writings I read on family worship!!! How are you??
Had a busy “rest day” yesterday, but looking forward to a slow day today. How did your Monday go?
I’ll be sure to check it out! Love reading and I know it’ll be a good read if you suggested it.
Awesome! It isn’t that deep but its simplicity and practicalness was really good for me! Blessings to you JBH!
Have to take a look at this
Family Worship shouldn’t just be a Bible study. It should be a time to encourage family members to love God.
Right the two don’t clash. We read the Word to foster love of God
Thanks Jim for sharing the works of J. H. Merle d’Aubigne. It is always a delight to learn of other Christian witnesses.
