Matthew 23:8-10 KJV But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. 9 And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ.1
John 13:13-14 KJV Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet.2
The most common title used by others of Jesus was Lord, or Master. Altogether there are 8 distinct Greek words associated with the designation of Master. But the Greek word concerning us under the title above is Despotes and represents one who has absolute ownership and uncontrolled power (yes, our modern vernacular despots is a negative connotation but appropriate, nonetheless.
I wonder if we could all spend some time in prayer today examining ourselves in this regard. Is Jesus your Master?
Thank you for this post Bruce, and thank you for writing a guest post for SlimJim while he is away. Even as a Christian I need to daily be reminded that I am not my own master but the Lord is. What a blessed Master is our LORD.
Worth pondering, at least once a day, with humility and repentance, or let the world have mastery over us.

Thanks for reading and commenting on this guest post while I’m away! Meditating on His Lordship today!!
Joining you in that with joy and gladness.
Dear Bruce, you have taken us a step further than even some who will accept Jesus as Savior, but not as Lord. “Master” denotes a fellowship between servant and the Master who owns him. What a blessing to serve Him.:)
Great revelation about the word Master and Jesus being Lord over all.
We recently had a conference with fellow pastors and there was a question about calling someone a father or spiritual father and that verse you used and what Paul said concerning the issue was raised, I discovered that people are desperate for answers.
That is a much needed conference topic
When we say He’s Lord it implies He’s master!
Amen. Thank you.
Thanks for commenting while I have been away from much blogging since I’m out of the country!
You are welcome. Good fill ins.
