This week I took a break from teaching Exodus with our family devotions. Been rather tired. But I want to reflect briefly on Exodus.
We are now in Exodus 30. Lord willing we pick up again from Exodus 30:11.
First off family devotions with family can be tiring and not easy. I now use three commentaries to prepare to teach my kids. After reading commentaries I also want to explain things simply to my daughters.
Still it has been rewarding. Which leads to the second point: It has been profitable. Sometimes we think the Old Testament is obscure. Or worst: Irrelevant. But I found it fascinating. I’m learning. The kids are learning. My wife is learning. We are all learning. Whenever we think a part of the Bible is hard to understand it is worth the effort studying it.
Thirdly it also help me appreciate more the Gospel and Jesus Christ. There’s so much typology pointing us to Christ. From Moses to the Tabernacle to the Priest and the sacrifices. There’s also the joy of knowing Christ is our Sacrifice for sins once for all.
Fourthly studying Exodus has also humbled me. There’s so much to learn in the Bible! We need to keep learning and remain teachable and sometimes books like Exodus reminds us there’s a lot we can learn for a lifetime!
Praise God!
I find the OT fascinating and deeply satisfying. Through it, I understand the teachings of Christ in a much more vivid picture. It sounds like you’re on the same track, Jim! God bless!
Glad to read your comment that’s encouraging to hear your love for the Old Testament!!!
Amen. Luke 24 comes to mind
That’s a good example going through the Bible with your kids
Our adult Sunday school class has been studying Exodus, too. It’s a fascinating book, and no matter how many times I’ve read it, I keep learning new things or finding different perspectives.
That’s great your church Sunday’s school is going through Exodus. That is awesome. It’s so true one can always still learn new things from the Scripture; I pray I never get tired of learning and finding new things in the Word!!!!
So thankful for the Book, the exodus itself and the new exodus! Your ladies have such a WONDERFUL heart for Jesus and His Word. I am so thankful for your preparation to teach them!
Awww thabks!!! By the way I’m praying for the lessons for the kids tomorrow!!! Excited!!! Thank you thank you for wanting to teach them!!!
Thank you for the opportunity!!!!! I am really excited as well. The one chart I am using is directly from my studies.
I remember having family devotions with my girls, no matter how simple I tried to make it, they thought I was to long-winded, lol
Wow whether they think its long winded or not praise God you taught them the Word! I’m so encouraged to hear that testimony from you brother! Are they all adults now?
All my girls are. Two are married. I have my son at home yet.
The wonders of His word are inexhaustible, praise God! May He continue to bless your family devotions as by the Holy Spirit.
Thanks for these words of blessings!! Hope to persevere and finish Exodus!!!
There’s so much wisdom treasure in God’s Word, inexhaustible. Thanks for the transparency. We all struggle (even us retirees at times), especially when we’re sleep deprived or up against demanding schedules.
So true about sleep deprivation and the struggle to teach and prep. It is so true that the Word is inexhaustibly insightful!!! How goes your Saturday???
I was workin’ on leaves today, the hard part, digging them out of the pachysandra and front garden. A couple more days and I’ll be done. Our youngest granddaughter’s b-day party is tonight. Turning 11. How goes your prep Saturday?
It’s “new” all of the time!! It’s awesome how ALIVE His Word truly is!!!
Sometimes it is good to take a break. This is it: “We need to keep learning and remain teachable and sometimes books like Exodus reminds us there’s a lot we can learn for a lifetime!”
Praying for your ministry this weekend.
