Are you looking for spiritually edifying reading on the birth of Christ that is also biblically faithful and accurate? This work is from Charles Spurgeon, the famous Victorian era Baptist Preacher. Based upon a sermon he delivered at his church at New Park Street Chapel on Christmas Eve 1854, it blew my mind that these words was from Spurgeon when he was twenty years old. The message in based upon Isaiah 7:14-15 and the truth Spurgeon delivered is timeless, Christ-centered and Gospel driven.
The booklet is divided into three parts after the introduction. The first is on the birth of Christ the second is on the food of Christ based upon Isaiah 7:15 and lastly part three is on the name of Christ. Under the birth of Christ there’s also four subpoints with the first on miraculous conception, the second is on humble percentage, the third is on humble birth which is balanced by the fourth subpoint on “Glorious Birth day.”
Interpreting Isaiah 7:14 can be controversial today, where some don’t think its Messianic while some see this as fulfilled earlier during Isaiah’s day and later again with Jesus. I appreciated that Spurgeon saw it clearly as being Messianic and referring to Jesus. Of the three sections in this booklet the part I found most fascinating is “The Food of Christ.” I never focused on Isaiah 7:15 as much as I have with Isaiah 7:14 and Spurgeon preaches verse 15 with several truths from it such as Christ is fully human and also Christ’s sweet words are food for our soul.
Reading this made me love Jesus more. I would never find it old the story of God the Son being born as a man to save us. What a glorious gospel. Whether you are looking for an advent reading, or want to read a short devotional or want to give an evangelistic tract that is timely during December I do recommend this booklet.
Hi Jim, Twenty years old, you say. To be that gifted by God, at that age, is truly mind-boggling. I shudder to think of myself when I was twenty. Thank you for sharing, Jim. Blessings!
Mind blowing indeed! Will catch up on your blog when I get back from my vacation
Enjoy! 🙂

Always love some Spurgeon wisdom on scripture. Amazing he was 20.
