For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Is it OK to curse people?
Here are the two answers which the skeptic believes shows a Bible contradiction:
Do not curse anyone.
“Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” (Romans 12:14)
No
“If anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be accursed. Maranatha!” (1 Corinthians 16:22)
“But even if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed! 9 As we have said before, even now I say again: if anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, he is to be accursed!” (Galatians 1:8-9)
(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)
Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:
- When dealing with skeptics’ claim of Bible contradictions it seems one can never be reminded enough of what exactly is a contradiction. A contradiction occurs when two or more claims conflict with one another so that they cannot simultaneously be true in the same sense and at the same time. To put it another way, a Bible contradiction exists when there are claims within the Bible that are mutually exclusive in the same sense and at the same time.
- One should be skeptical of whether this is a Bible contradiction given the Skeptic Annotated Bible’s track record of inaccurately handling the Bible. See the many examples of their error which we have responded to in this post: Collection of Posts Responding to Bible Contradictions. Of course that does not take away the need to respond to this claim of a contradiction, which is what the remainder of this post will do. But this observation should caution us to slow down and look more closely at the passages cited by the Skeptic Annotated Bible to see if they interpreted the passages properly to support their conclusion that it is a Bible contradiction.
- The skeptic tries to pit Romans 12:14 as affirming the claim “One should not curse people” against both 1 Corinthians 16:22 and Galatians 1:8-9 as affirming “One could curse people.”
- The skeptic needs to pay attention who is doing the action with the verbs for “curse” in these passages.
- The skeptic cited Romans 12:14 correctly as affirming the claim “One should not curse people.” When it says “do not curse” the Greek verb for curse is a second person plural imperative in which the imperative with a negative particle before the verb indicate this is a prohibition while the second person plural refers to the readers of Paul’s epistles. So Christians are not to curse those who persecute them but rather bless them.
- Looking carefully at 1 Corinthians 16:22 and Galatians 1:8-9 we see the verses is not teaching believers that “One could curse people.” Note the verbs for both passages use a stative verb plus the noun “curse.” The stative verbs for both 1 Corinthians 16:22 and Galatians 1:8-9 are third person singular as oppose to second person singular; so its not telling the readers to do something but instead it focuses on the individual who does not love the Lord (1 Corinthians 16:22) or the individual who preach another Gospel (Galatians 1:8-9). These individuals have brought upon themselves curses because of their action (note the verbs are active voices, and with the subject being the individual). Stating the factual truth of the matter of what are the consequences of such individuals is not the same thing as going around being the very one performing the cursing.
- If it helps to think about it from a linguistic perspective of speech acts, Romans 12:14 prohibit cursing nonbelievers with us doing the act ourselves; but that is not the same acts with Paul’s speech in 1 Corinthians 16:22 and Galatians 1:8-9 informing readers that certain individuals action will bring about obligatory consequences that are curses.
- There is no contradiction here. Seems the skeptic needs to learn of How to Handle Bible Contradictions.
- We shouldn’t miss that worldviews are at play even with the skeptic’s objection to Christianity. The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview. Great word here my friend!
Thanks BG! Hope your Monday is going well
Yes sir it is! Into studies! Reading a book! Etc.
Excellent insight brother. Easily resolved.
Blessings for a stunning day in paradise.
Thanks for reading this! Hope your day is going well! Wonder what the weather in your area is like, since so much of the US seems to face a hard cold front!
54 and sunny in Atlanta! A stunning day in paradise. 😁👍
Great post. Point 6 bore out what I suspected (but did not have the Greek grammar background to know) that those who do not love the Lord are already cursed. This pretty much mirrors John 3:18.
All good connections to John 3:18! This is where comments section is great,we all need each other’s insights into the Word!
By the way, I like the logo that you have changed to. I am not certain when you changed it, but it fits the blog.
Thanks! Is this the logo for the blog or our social media account? They were all done within a year or less I think!
Thanks for this thorough rebuttal. Once again, Steve/Stephen Wells has thrown context out the window. Sadly, these days many evangelical pastors and churches defy Galatians 1:8-9 and readily embrace false teachers and false gospels.
Wells throws out the context; he doesn’t even look at the verses themselves carefully! Yes Galatians 1 is applicable today! Sadly it might be relevant for the top 20 biggest churches in America…I need to get on that sometimes and make a post on it unless you have done it already?
Yup, I suspect all of the Top 20 are suspect! Well, I know I definitely have more time than you do, so I’ll put that post on my to-do list.
I can’t believe the shakey arguments of these skeptics! Thank you Pastor for once again dismantling their stand.
I see being “cursed” as the fate proclaimed upon apostates and others. We are not given the authority to enact a curse but declare that will befall those whom God judges.
Well said here: “ We are not given the authority to enact a curse but declare that will befall those whom God judges.” man this is where we need each other’s insights in dismantling what the skeptics make up! The indefinite pronoun in Galatians translated in English as “who” in Galatians 1 shows Paul was not having the power to curse himself but he declared the conditions of one who would be cursed. Your sentence made me recall the Greek text! Again once more thanks for sharing that I hope others looking for answers will see your comment here!!
Well stated SlimJim. The title “Skeptic Annotated Bible” is an oxymoron to me. Sounds like a coupon for a free rental from a no longer in business video store. Let the skeptic ponder the meaning of Hebrews 11:6. If they have NOT been granted the necessary wisdom to understand that verse, the rest of the Bible will be locked to them as well. Let the believer consider Proverbs 14:7 and then deal with any Skeptic Annotated Bible appropriately.
Amen to Proverbs 14:7. Good point. I love your analogy: “ Sounds like a coupon for a free rental from a no longer in business video store.” What a vivid illustration I can picture it in my head! God bless you sir!!
Good point in part 6: “Stating the factual truth of the matter of what are the consequences of such individuals is not the same thing as going around being the very one performing the cursing.”
Thanks for noticing this point. I think that distinction makes this alleged Bible contradiction to be rather silly by the Skeptic Annotated Bible. Thanks for your comment brother!
Wells is truly horrific and again I am amazed by God’s patience.
Amen it is amazing how patient God is with Steve Wells, and that makes me think of how patience He is with us! Are you back in PA or enroute?
I’m in pa. Praying for study!!!
Context is everything. And as far as bringing a curse on oneself, I pray Wells take heed. Those who mock and scorn God’s word are “as chaff that the wind drives away.”
I pray Wells take heed too with that biblical warning you gave here. I really hope he sees these posts on here and the comments. I join you with that prayer! How are you Dora?
I’m well enough, thank you for asking. Certainly much better than this time last year and that’s a good sign, praise God! Praying for blessing upon blessing upon you and your family! May you rejoice in your Maker and your God!
I like that you brought insights from the Greek text. These pesky atheists must be annoyed since the Bible just won’t yield a contradiction!
Thanks for reading this! This is an ongoing project on our blog refuting the skeptic Annotated Bible. I imagine some are annoyed with this ongoing series! But I believe some people will be helped here too. Thanks for reading this! Have you checked out point 2 and the link to more articles?
I have read and commented on some of your posts but this is the first time I read your post on alleged Bible contradictions
Twisting the Bible is no laughing matter
It is not at all. It’s a serious sin
This site is a serious warning to these mockers
