Point: Everyone has a worldview. Different worldviews also understand differently what’s man’s biggest problem. Of course what is seen as the greatest problem will shape what one thinks should be the solution (if any). I think a helpful evangelistic and apologetics discussion question is “What do you think is the biggest problem in the world today?” and chances are someone would identify what’s a legitimate problem (though not always); yet what they think is a dire problem might not be the biggest problem from God’s perspective.
How can we transition that point to sharing the Biblical worldview and also give an analogy for the nonbelievers to “step into the biblical worldview” and have the point driven home?
Picture: I read a news article about silly things people call 911 for. 911 in the United States and America is the number you call for emergency services such as police, fire fighter, etc. Some of things shared are silly. But for the individuals making the call no doubt for some of them it was a mental emergency; but that belief is shaped by their views of the world.
Here’s some that the article mentioned:
- A “caller who requested assistance deleting a voicemail from their phone”
- A “caller whose bathtub drain was clogged”
- A”caller who used the emergency line to avoid being put on hold in a request for paperwork”
- A “prank caller reporting a “cougar,” which turned out to be referencing the colloquial term for an attractive older woman.
- A “roommate had eaten their take-out order”
- A “caller reported a “hostile cat” in their neighborhood”
- A “caller reported they were out of milk and a caller reported that swallowing a mosquito had caused them to choke and lose their dentures”
We would say some of those are issues but not serious enough to be the big problems associated with calling 911.
In the same way people can think their biggest problem are other things. But the Biblical reveal the biggest problem is with our sins against God and the wrath of God we deserve.
Fortunately there’s the greatest news ever: Jesus Christ who died to save us from our sins, if we trust in Christ’s work and Person!
POSSIBLE SCENARIO FOR EMPLOYING THIS ILLUSTRATION DURING APOLOGETIC EVANGELISM
CHRISTIAN: What do you think is the biggest problem according to your worldview?
NON-CHRISTIAN: I think the problem is X.
CHRISTIAN: Those are problems but I think its not the biggest problem. The biggest problem is your sins against God. In light of that your problem is a side issue/or an issue that stems from the root cause of sin. <Insert Analogy>.

Great analogy, Jimmy. I’ll remember this one.
Thanks for reading this! I am glad it made the point! Hope your Friday is going well!!
I would love to listen in to some of those 911 calls
It probably would be funny yet sobering since people do really need the phone line clear for real emergencies. It makes me think of how people confuse the trivial for the important all the time
It be hilarious to listen in to
Excellent brother. Love this: “Fortunately there’s the greatest news ever: Jesus Christ who died to save us from our sins, if we trust in Christ’s work and Person!”
Shalom!
Amen! Have a blessed upcoming Saturday sir!
Good reminder: “The biggest problem is your sins against God. “
Thanks for reading this Frank! Blessings to you!! So glad that God saves us from our biggest problem
Excellent transition into the Gospel! This post also brings to mind how we Christians can sometimes get sucked into temporal/worldly concerns/thinking/worldview rather than staying on course with a spiritual worldview.
Yeah even Christians can get lost with all the worldliness and temporal concerns. HOw did your Friday go? I had a lot going on with ministry and getting things in order for family concerning logistical stuff all day.
RE: Friday
Thanks. I had blood drawn in the AM and shoveled the driveway in the afternoon – only about 1″ of snow. The days kind of blend together after retirement. Our oldest son is coming over tonight to watch football. I hope you have a good Saturday! I’ll be praying for all of your logistical stuff.
You used something that I have long appreciated: perspective. “Those planes in the photo almost crashed!” No, because of size and distance, they were actually miles apart. Closer to your examples are when kids are screaming and crying in the Big Box Store because they want that overpriced toy, but Mom is trying to keep the spending down because the rent is due. Keeping the home is more important than trivial matters, but the toy is the immediate big deal to them.
Tom pointed out some things, especially the transition to the gospel. All the analogies we have are less effective if we don’t bring it home at some point.
Thanks for the encouragement! Good examples you gave, they are very useful to show how we don’t have perspective often…with fellow humans let alone God! May we share the Gospel!

I agree.
Have a blessed Lord’s day today Maw mAw!!
I did and the same hope for you and your Family.

This is a thoughtful analogy
Thanks appreciate you reading this. I plan to use this analogy sometime when I preach!!
I didn’t realize you were a preacher
I’m convicted thinking about how many emergency prayers can be for the trivial
Yet at the same time we can pray to God about all things
Putting it that way I am glad God is not like us
