This week I taught on Messianic Prophecy for our mid-week study. See Psalm 8 is Messianic. There’s a lot that makes me think about biblical theology, progressive revelation, NT use of OT, intertextuality, Canonical approach, apologetics, antecdenat theology, etc. Granted what I finally teach isn’t laced with all the technicality. There’s also a dimension of Biblical Theology and Self-Attesting Nature of Scripture with apologetics value. So Psalms 8 is quite deep because the Bible is so deep!
Yet the Word of God can be super practical! That’s what I will be going over today, if you can pray for me. Here’s the outlines for that teaching today:Disciplining Your Kids Series: Table of Contents
Do you marvel at how the Word of God is practical and also deep?
I’ve read through Part I and this is very good advice for parents, Pastor Jim. As someone who has done a few parenting classes myself, I realize the importance of this topic. Thank you for helping others with this and please know that your presentation is in my prayers.
Like you I do marvel at how practical and deep God’s Word is.
Yes, I always marvel that the word of God is practical and oh so deep! “Jesus” is my marvel character! He’s super man! 😊
Amen Jesus is the greatest Marvel Character!! Well put brother! I hope your Saturday went well sir!!
Yes and yours too!
Great post. Would like to hear you teach one day.
Agreed sir! Like to hear him also!
I might need to find a way to load messages on the blog; good idea; God bless you Andy!
Yes, that would be great.
Do you marvel at how the Word of God is practical and also deep?
Absolutely! This is true of Scripture in general, but my favorite book is John’s Gospel. In some ways it’s relatively simple and straightforward. But it’s also quite profound.
It’s truly multi-layered, with lots of double meanings (paronomasia). And I like the fact that the Greek text is relatively simple, though, again, with paronomasia and other literary devices.
Gospel of John is such a literary masterpiece. I really like Carson’s commentary on it. Any other resources you recommend on John??
I could name so many! Besides the grammatical/syntactical help in the EGGNT and BHGNT, here are works on John I’d highly recommend:
Westcott, B. F., The Gospel According to St. John (Yep, that Westcott)
Thompson, Marianne Meye, The God of the Gospel of John (given her focus, it provides an interesting and illuminating perspective)
Barrett, C. K., The Gospel According to St. John: An Introduction with Commentary and Notes on the Greek Text, 2nd ed.
Martyn, J. Louis, History and Theology in the Fourth Gospel, 3rd ed. (in case you haven’t read)
Brown, Raymond E., both Anchor Bible volumes (yes, it contains some RCC-isms, but excellent nonetheless, though perhaps a bit ‘liberal’ at times)
Keener, Craig, both volumes (contains interesting historical tidbits not found in other works)
Bruce, F.F., The Gospel & Epistles of John (Bruce always has great insights)
Koester, Craig, Symbolism in the Fourth Gospel: Meaning, Mystery, Community (a specialized look at certain aspects)
Malina, Bruce J., Richard L. Rohrbaugh, Social-Science Commentary on the Gospel of John (same as above!)
Schnelle, Udo, Antidocetic Christology in the Gospel of John (I love the focus in this not-well-known book [I stumbled upon in my local used book store and @ $4.98!]; technical and very detailed; I’d already determined that John was written as an implicit apologetic against a proto-gnosticism by the time I procured this, but this book really nails the anti-docetic aspect; originally in German.)
Ashton, John, ed. The Interpretation of John (a bit ‘liberal’ for sure, but thought-provoking insights)
Bauckham R., and C. Mosser, eds., The Gospel of John and Christian Theology (nice collection from authors of various backgrounds)
Praying for you 🙏 Practical, yes. It hit me yesterday as I was reading the Sermon on the Mount. It doesn’t “seem” practical at all by the world’s standards. It turns them upside down. But with the eyes of faith, this Sermon is God incarnate talking, the Maker of heaven and earth, the most Practical Being that ever set foot on earth. And He’s instructing us on how to live. How dare we do otherwise! How impractical!
Wow nicely put! WHen you said it like that, not only is it practical in being relevant for our lives but also practical in making us REVERENT to our Lord and Savior! Praise God!
I marvel at how practical and deep, and also how it connects heaven and earth, God and man. He is truly a personal God.
Amen it is truly awesome and amazing! A Personal and Living God is worth our worship and our awe! Thanks for sharing that G.W!
“Do you marvel at how the Word of God is practical and also deep?” Yes, and at times it is intensely personal, in the “Closer to me than my own skin” sense. For example when I was a very young Christian Isaiah 55 “spoke” to me extremely personally. It was so personal I had the real sense that had I not been born, Isaiah 55 would not have been written! To this day, 40+ years later, I still feel a little of that “warm vibration” whenever I read Isaiah 55! 😊 💕
Thanks for sharing! The Word of God is so amazing and it’s amazing How you often mediate on it! What an example and an encouragement
Yes…practical and deep 🙌🙌🙌
Amen! Agree with you! Have a blessed Lord’s Day tomorrow!!
You have nailed it brother. It is very practical and extremely deep. Praying for your ministry this weekend.
Shalom!
Thanks for your prayers; I see God working for today’s one day parenting conference!
I was away from WordPress for an extended period yesterday. I hope the conference went well. Yes, God’s Word is lofty, but also has very practical teaching for day-to-day living.
When we are challenged by the depth of the Word, we are encouraged to take the plunge. Our deepening faith will bless us.
In prayer for all your teachings. May it be heard and acted upon.
Thank you Maw maw for your prayers for all the teachings. That means a lot to me. May God richly bless you
And you also.
Hoping this conference went well for you!!!
THanks! Blessings to you sis, I’m slowly catching up on everything since its a crazy weekend in so many ways (good ways)
Amen! His Word never is out-of-date and it’s poetic Words are always in motion!
Amen His word is never out of date!!
And the answer to your question is all the time, either practical, deep or both. And in starting a study of Jeremiah, other than a few details, he could be writing the news of today.
So true; sometimes passages seems like its contemporary headlines!
