For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Were the men with Paul knocked to the ground?
Here are the two answers which the skeptic believes shows a Bible contradiction:
Yes, they fell to the ground.
“And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew dialect, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.’” (Acts 26:14)
No, they remained standing.
“The men who traveled with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one.” (Acts 9:7)
(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)
Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:
- When dealing with skeptics’ claim of Bible contradictions it seems one can never be reminded enough of what exactly is a contradiction. A contradiction occurs when two or more claims conflict with one another so that they cannot simultaneously be true in the same sense and at the same time. To put it another way, a Bible contradiction exists when there are claims within the Bible that are mutually exclusive in the same sense and at the same time.
- One should be skeptical of whether this is a Bible contradiction given the Skeptic Annotated Bible’s track record of inaccurately handling the Bible. See the many examples of their error which we have responded to in this post: Collection of Posts Responding to Bible Contradictions. Of course that does not take away the need to respond to this claim of a contradiction, which is what the remainder of this post will do. But this observation should caution us to slow down and look more closely at the passages cited by the Skeptic Annotated Bible to see if they interpreted the passages properly to support their conclusion that it is a Bible contradiction.
- The skeptic tries to pit Acts 26:14 as affirming the claim “The men with Paul fell to the ground.” against Acts 9:7 as affirming “The men with Paul remain steadfast.”
- The skeptic rightly interpreted Acts 26:14 as affirming the claim “The men with Paul fell to the ground.” But the skeptic did not interpret Acts 9:7 accurately as affirming “The men with Paul remain steadfast.” The verse does mention the men with Paul were standing and what that moment was like; but that verse does not say the men with Paul didn’t fall at all. So the skeptics did not accurately extrapolate from Acts 9:7 to justify his claim.
- Furthermore Acts 9:8 does mention Paul is on the ground; it makes sense that he fell if he was on the ground. While it does not mention that the other men with Paul were on the ground still we see something happened powerful enough that Paul as a grown man was knocked down to the ground. It is reasonable to think others could have also fallen on the ground who were in proximity with Paul. This of course is confirmed in Acts 26:14.
- Outside of the Bible we also see that if there’s multiple historical account of the same event and one historical account did not mentioned a detail that doesn’t mean another account that did mentioned the detail is somehow contradicting with the first account. Outside the Bible we also see that if different accounts mentioned separate incidents that are similar that does not mean there’s a contradiction between the accounts either. See for example my posts on the Gold Medal at the Cambrian Patrol, the Louisiana Purchase, the Thanksgiving Story, and September 11th. I bring these examples up is to make the point that the rebuttal to the skeptic here isn’t something that’s unique to the Bible but its also how we deal with historical account in general.
- There is no contradiction here. Seems the skeptic needs to learn of How to Handle Bible Contradictions.
- I know some of you are also searching for the related question of Did Paul see Jesus on the road to Damascus? and Did Paul go to Jerusalem immediately after his conversion?
- We shouldn’t miss that worldviews are at play even with the skeptic’s objection to Christianity. The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview. Check out our post “Skeptic Annotated Bible Author’s Self-Defeating Worldview.”
[…] Were the men with Paul knocked to the ground? […]
It becomes pretty simple when you understand both things can be true.
Thanks for the insight.
Thank you Michael for reading this and you are right in your comment! Its ironic those that are secular and talk about rejecting false binary thinking…would engage in that with the Scriptures like here! Have a blessed day in Georgia brother Michael!
Good point: “if there’s multiple historical account of the same event and one historical account did not mentioned a detail that doesn’t mean another account that did mentioned the detail is somehow contradicting with the first account.” There’s no contradiction between these verses.
Amen there’s no contradiction. It’s rather forced on the part of the skeptics to say this is a contradiction. Rather atrocious of the skeptic here. Thanks for reading this! Have a blessed day in SC Frank!!
My thoughts exactly!
Amen Lisa! God bless you with your Tuesday!
Thanks…🙌
You are welcome! Thanks for reading this! I hope you have a blessed week in the Lord! Will be on your site later today listening to worship songs while preparing for tonight’s Bible study on Messianic Psalms!!
🙌🙌🙌 ✝️🛐🙏🙏🙏
Humility before the word of God is something a non-believer cannot possess unless he was also a true intellectual. A true intellectual comes to texts in an attitude of “what can I learn?” not “what can I mock?” Oh that our Lord would give all those possessed of unbelief, an intellectual’s ability to learn until they are brought by the Spirit to believe!
Your comment is so dead on accurate. You said “ A true intellectual comes to texts in an attitude of “what can I learn?” not “what can I mock?”” And I agree! I pray the last sentence you wrote for Steve Wells who is the author of the skeptic Annotated Bible. I think often of how he’s getting older and yet add the occasional contradictions to his site every six months or so. I pray he repents and be born again before it’s too late. I pray also he reads these posts and your comments and that of other believers too! We gotta pray!!
Thanks for this rebuttal of another one of Steve/Stephen Wells’ alleged contradictions. Once again he goes to the either/or false dichotomy well. I imagine he is quite pleased with himself, chalking up yet another “proof” against the veracity of the Bible. It will all come back to bite him some day.
I think he does think he’s so smart! Next week I will tackle another of his alleged contradiction concerning Paul’s conversion! I heard skeptics attack Acts record for years, I remember someone arguing against me in Iraq and seeing this brought back memories of how people actually do use the skeptic website to try to feel justified in their rejection of God. But as you said it will come back to bite them. How’s your Tuesday going so far???
RE: Tuesday
Today was super busy! Had to take the dog to a groomer that does elderly dogs waaaaay out in the boondocks. Then had my yearly physical which took super long because the MD was training a medical student.
Enough whining on my part, how’s your Tuesday starting out?
Anyone that is sensible even if they are non-Christians will see through this. Stunning example of biblical coherence in your post. Funny I see people making comments online all the time that there’s contradictions yet they didn’t read anything like this about the verses. Quite frankly, truth and actually knowing the laws of noncontradiction doesn’t matter to them.
I am appalled often how bad these folks understand the law of non-contradiction. It’s part of the reason why I teach my kids formal logic, and will teach them again in another year or so.
Learning some of the intricacies of logic will make it hard for them to be deceived by attacking nonbelievers
Various accounts from multiple sources are naturally going to be different in parts but not contradictory. Think of 3 witnesses of a car accident, each person with a different vantage point.
That’s a very good example with the witnesses! Its incredible how the skeptics can make fun of fundamentalists but their readings of the Bible is worst than any of their caricature of fundamentalists, with how simplistic their hermeneutics are; crazy isn’t it? Thanks for reading this dear brother in Christ, may your week’s ministry be a blessing!
Wells is so infuriating. I haven’t listened to this whole thing but the contradictions in Wells’ worldview is stunning. Feel free to delete this video interview if you want, I just thought it gave insight into Wells himself. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CuOslLo6htg
Wow I see it’s a newer video. I have a post a few years back responding to the worldview as described in a YouTube interview he gave. I see nothing has really changed. This guy needs our prayers
YES!!!!! The judgment of God is coming, the time for repentance is now.
If the skeptics really observe the details of Scripture around the verses they bring up they can see how everything connects perfectly and so perfect that you know it’s the Word of God.
Well said I like that. Thanks for reading this ongoing series including past ones that you commented on
This is a good endeavor on your blog

Jim, I always appreciate gaining deeper insight of the Word. Posts such as this challenge me to take a second look at the verses I read. It also encourages my writing to reflect with truth upon the Gospel.
Praise God for the encouragement with how you get things out of the Word of God. I’m encouraged to hear that brother
You know a lot about The Bible. It’s fascinating to read the resolution of these contradictions. Thank you!
Thanks sister! I do love the BIble a lot! Hope you are doing well this week sister
Yes, getting much better! 💜
Glad to hear this
