My present laptop is now my longest lasting laptop (8 years old!). I really don’t want to get a new one because I have Bible Works software on it and Bible Works is no longer in business and available and they are the Bible softeware that I most prefer. But maybe the deeper reason is that I just got so use to my laptop and don’t want to change anything.
Last night when I shut down my computer there was just a blank blue screen and the computer couldn’t do anything. It was like that the whole time. I lower my laptop screen and this morning it was the same. I turned it on and off and it was the same.
I prayed and asked others to pray and by God’s mercy it started working normally again. My biggest fears was all the sermon outlines and teaching courses outlines I have taught over the years which would be helpful for me when I am asked to teach overseas and at other churches, since they are literally hundreds of messages with thousands of hours of studies poured into them.
I was thinking to myself I should have backed up the computer to an external hard drive. I have been putting it off for a while now. While the computer was still unable to work I started wondering when was the last time I backed up the documents on my computer to my external hard drive. I thought to myself it must have been a year and no more than a year and a half ago.
So when by God’s grace my computer just started working right now I thought the first thing I need to do was back up everything. I decided to look at my external hard drive to see when the last back up was; it was in 2018! Then I thought about how 2018 to the present has really been the most optimized productivity of the amount of lessons and teachings I have taught; and all that would have been lost if all I have was things saved only up to 2018!
Two spiritual thoughts occurred to me with this.
First it was a moment to reflect that since 2018 I have grown spiritually. I have also taught better than I did before compared to the first half of my time in ministry. Of course I have a lot to grow still; but sometimes we should reflect and be thankful to God who sanctifies and mature us. There’s a wrong response of being prideful when we think of how we have changed; but if we understand it is God’s grace that transforms us we don’t have room for pride but thanksgiving to God and praise to God, with an attitude of humility. Truly understanding God’s grace does not mean we deny God working and changing us; that can be driven by false humility which is actually a form of pride. But true understanding of grace means we see things truthfully, including acknowledging God’s changing us and transforming us; but we know the truth it is God’s work in us and so we praise Him for His grace.
Secondly it also made me think of how often put things off that they are supposed to do; I thought I only put off backing up my computer for only a year; we often judge ourselves better than we really are! But its been for years since 2018! That’s five years! We may put off things God wants us to do; and we think we still have time, not realizing time is passing by quickly. And the worst thing you can put off not doing is being right with God. The consequences is too great (hell, eternal punishment, etc). But fortunately there’s good news: There is a way to be right with God, and you can be right with God right now if you understand how you sinned against God. Trust in Jesus Christ. Trust the Person name Jesus who is fully God becoming fully man; and as a Man Jesus fulfilled all the righteous requirement of the Law that we should have fulfilled (but we have fallen short) so that He be our substitute in taking the penalty we deserve: the Wrath of God. We cannot do good deeds to cancel out our penalty; even if we try we still continue to sin! Despite this hopeless situation when we trust in ourselves we now do the opposite: Trust in Him alone that HE saves! The Bible teaches if you have faith in Jesus He will save us! Don’t delay, make sure you are saved by God’s grace alone, through faith alone in Christ alone!
I was grieved when my computer died a year and a half ago. I was a pc user and then I switched to MacBook. While it was a MASSIVE pain for a few months, I can honestly say that it was a really great investment and it is much easier to backup a Mac than a pc in my opinion. I am thankful for your analogy. I agree 100% do not delay in one’s day of salvation. I can’t help but to think how thankful I am that God does not back up and store my sins to use against me. I am thankful for you and this thought provoking post. Praise God that when we are lead somewhere new God wires our brains to adapt to the new challenges that are put before us.
This is so good: “I can’t help but to think how thankful I am that God does not back up and store my sins to use against me.”
Amen!
Technical question: Can one still write in Microsoft word document through Mac? I ask since it seems a few of our church members sometimes sent Mac documents that I can’t open which lead me to wonder about the compatibility. Also ordered the gift book for you on Amazon it should be on its way to you!
Technical answer: Yes you can. MS Office has a version that runs on a Mac and the MS Word documents it produces can be read on a PC or a Mac. Please tell me that you did a backup! 2018! – Bruce
Every thing is now successfully backed up!! Whew
Excellent! I feel better already! 🙂
Jimmy, I have Microsoft Word, excel, PowerPoint (which is how I make PowerPoints for the youth) on my Mac. Word operates just like it does on a pc. I paid extra to have Word, but it is WELL worth the price!!!!
Wow thank you for that book! What a blessing!!! Oh you might be interested to know, I had to submit a Doctrine of God research question (it’s an apologetics style paper) and I chose “how is the Holy Spirit sent?” I have always been interested in the Filioque clause/controversy. So many treat Christians treat the Holy Spirit as a force or a lesser member of the Trinity so I am really excited to embark on this journey. The Matthew Barrett book you sent me will be an asset for this paper! I was surprised my professor was impressed I would pick such a topic! I have learned so much from you brother and I pray you know that! You are such a blessing to me and to so many others!!!!
Answer is yes but it will cost you
Way easier to back up. 😀
Slip, slip, slipping away….Time does that. I just had my 78th birthday. My first born child just turned 56….my youngest grand just turned 1…Where does time go? Every thing moves at a fast pace except the things that really matter…the Lords return being the most important but the Lords time isn’t the same as our time. He is giving us time to get our act together.
Happy Birthday! What a blessing of life the Lord is giving you. Don’t even think about old until you cross 100. 🤪
I’m working toward that goal. Both of my parents were 97 when they passed and both Grand Mothers were in their 90’s.
Praise God! What a generational blessing from the Lord! ✝️ 😀
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. (Psalms 91:16, KJV)
Wow God bless you with your 78th birthday! How many grand kids do you have Beverly?
9 but really 10 with an adopted grand..2 boys and the rest girls.
I feel your pain brother!
This is it at a spiritual level: “But fortunately there’s good news: There is a way to be right with God, and you can be right with God right now if you understand how you sinned against God. ”
On another point. There are tools today that automatically back up all your files “to the cloud” whenever you change anything. I would be happy to chat with you sometime if it would help. This is part of my world professionally.
Wow will do that. There’s a lot of things I’m busy with life change the next month but in March that sounds like a plan!
Whenever is good for you.
My technical observation is that you living on borrowed time. As an alert, external hard drives fail just like internal hard drives.
Just let me know when is good for you.
Blessings.
Jimmy, I’m glad you realized what you needed to do before it was too late! And thanks for relating that to the more (most) important issue of eternity!
God is gracious! Lesson learned!
Good thoughts and reflections from you brother! I appreciate your insight into your situation.
Thanks! Blessings to you
I thought I heard someone screaming! 😉 I have a couple of these for external back ups and they have performed magnificently:

You can also get them in lower or higher storage capacities. Depends on your budget and needs.
Re: Bibleworks, Accordance has Bibleworks users on it. Accordance supports both PC and Mac.

I am an Apple fan so I own a MacBook Pro. Ok, I have to get a new one now but mine is from 2010. While you pay upfront for a Mac, the results are great and they last a very long time.
Back up soon!!!!
I am really thinking about switching to Mac once I am at a better place financially the next few months from now. Thanks!!!
Sounds like a divine shutdown, so you could get backed up😁
Ah true good point!!! Blessings to you sister
And too you, also😉
I’m happy for you that your laptop started again so you can backup your files. I need to get a new Chromebook pretty soon.
Gotcha! A new laptop would have to be in my new future. How are you today?
Moving slow today, which is the new norm post-retirement. How’s your Tuesday going?
Glad you got it all backed up, Jim. For the record, I also run BibleWorks 9 on my Win 7 laptop and Win 10 PC.
Gotcha! Thanks for sharing that
I recommend backing up to the “cloud.” An external hard drive can be lost or stop working. Google Drive and Dropbox have free editions with some limitations, and I have used both. All my new stuff is on Microsoft OneDrive, which is part of my subscription to Word etc. Yes I have to pay for it, but it works. 😊
Gotcha this is actually a good idea!!
It is great peace of mind that I know I can get to my files from ANY computer, provided I recall my user name and password. 😊
That is what I use as well.
So thankful that God came to your rescue… 🙂
Yes the mercy of God is so amazing! I’m floored!
You’re laptop is durable!
Amen.
” And the worst thing you can put off not doing is being right with God.”
God is good!!
Amen.
And amen!
Whew – such is His grace
AMEN Thank God for bloggers who are in the know! All that you share here is relevant and helpful. “We may put off things God wants us to do; and we think we still have time, not realizing time is passing by quickly.” Time runs out on earth, but not in heaven.
God has been gracious! Thanks for your encouraging comment!
The best way to deal with backups is to get it automated. You can pay for a service that will back up your files to a location other than where your PC is located. That protects more than just a PC failure.
Good point
My husband has a desktop that he uses as a server. The advantage is that any laptop/computer on our network can backup files on it. He uses a flash drive for off-site backup which he updates regularly. It’s worked for us! I’m leery of putting stuff on the cloud in this age of techno-surveillance, tbh. So glad you didn’t lose anything, brother. Praise God! 🙂
Yeah I understand that concern with big tech these days…
Reblogged this on clydeherrin.
Pastor Jim, this post is filled with so many special nuggets. Amen to our Father who never tires from energizing our faith when we may feel life’s darkness is trying to gain a foothold. Thanks for the reminder to back up our data. I’m a bit overdue myself.
Grateful to God! Yes gotta be reminded to back things up!
Thank you.
YOu are welcome! HOpe you are doing well!
A lot Better today. Love in Christ Jesus, my Grand.
Amen!
God is gracious!!
I looked up Bibleworks sad to see this software went out of business
Most of the data I use is on a USB flash drive which is backed up to a one terabyte external SSD drive. I think one could also use an online storage as well. If the computer goes, it is easy to replace it with a new one one.
I have a one tetrabyte external HD that I backed up; it seems I don’t know if I can only trust the cloud too but have one for myself physically
A combination of both is wise. Strictly cloud based is risky too. If the past three years have taught us anything, any provider can pause, delete or eliminate access at an instant…anytime. They have their own issues too.
