For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Did Mary Magdalene recognize Jesus when he first appeared to her?
Here are the two answers which the skeptic believes indicate a Bible contradiction:
Yes, she recognized him.
“And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Rejoice!” And they came up and took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him.” (Matthew 28:9)
No, she didn’t recognize him.
“When she had said this, she turned around and *saw Jesus standing there, and yet she did not know that it was Jesus.” (John 20:14)
Jesus didn’t appear to her; she had a vision of angels who told her that he was alive.
“and did not find His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive.” (Luke 24:23)
(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)
Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:
- When dealing with skeptics’ claim of Bible contradictions it seems one can never be reminded enough of what exactly is a contradiction. A contradiction occurs when two or more claims conflict with one another so that they cannot simultaneously be true in the same sense and at the same time. To put it another way, a Bible contradiction exists when there are claims within the Bible that are mutually exclusive in the same sense and at the same time.
- One should be skeptical of whether this is a Bible contradiction given the website’s track record of inaccurate handling of biblical passages. See the many examples of their error we have responded to here in this post: Collection of Posts Responding to Bible Contradictions. Of course that does not take away the need to respond to this post, which is what the remainder of the post will do. But this observation should caution us to slow down and look more closely at the passages the Skeptic Annotated Bible cited and see if they interpreted the passages properly to support their conclusion that it is a Bible contradiction.
- The skeptic here tries to pit Matthew 28:9 which the skeptic claimed “Mary Magdalene recognize Jesus when he first appeared to her” against John 20:14 which the skeptic claimed “Mary Magdalene did not recognize Jesus when he first appeared to her” and also against Luke 24:23 which the skeptic claimed “Mary Magdalene did not even encounter Jesus.”
- When we evaluate these alleged Bible contradictions we have to ask if the skeptics rightly interpret the verses they cited. For Matthew 28:9 the skeptic here did rightly interpret it as asserting “Mary Magdalene recognize Jesus when he first appeared to her.”
- It seems John 20:14 which the skeptic claimed “Mary Magdalene did not recognize Jesus when he first appeared to her” is not necessarily incompatible with Matthew 28:9 which the skeptic claimed “Mary Magdalene recognize Jesus when he first appeared to her.” While Mary Magdalene did not recognize Jesus from John 20:14-15 later in John 20:16-18 she did recognized Jesus: “16 Jesus *said to her, “Mary!” She turned and *said to Him in [a]Hebrew, “Rabboni!” (which means, Teacher). 17 Jesus *said to her, “Stop clinging to Me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to My brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and My God and your God.’” 18 Mary Magdalene *came and announced to the disciple.” There’s nothing from John 20:14-15 and John 20:16-18 to suggests they are different appearances; rather its still the first appearance of Jesus to Mary and its only in the beginning that Mary did not recognize Jesus but soon she did recognized him. So according to the context within John 20 we should not take John 20:14 to mean Mary never recognized Jesus at all. So John 20:14 in its immediate context within the chapter can be synchronized with Matthew 28:9.
- The skeptic wrongly interpreted Luke 24:23 which the skeptic claimed “Mary Magdalene did not even encounter Jesus.” Note the verse does not deny Mary encountering Jesus. The verse is about Mary and other women having met angels at Jesus’ grave. But just because the verse did not mention Mary encountering Jesus does not mean that didn’t happen; its just not the focus in Luke 24:23. The skeptic here is making a fallacious argument of silent; remember just because this verse is silent about Jesus’ appearance to Mary Magdalene does not mean other verses will not give details about Jesus’ appearances to Mary.
- There is no contradiction here. Seems the skeptic needs to learn of How to Handle Bible Contradictions.
- We shouldn’t miss that worldviews are at play even with the skeptic’s objection to Christianity. The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview. Check out our post “Skeptic Annotated Bible Author’s Self-Defeating Worldview.”

Thanks for thoroughly refuting this alleged contradiction. Steve/Stephen Wells’ exclusion of context and overall compatibility is criminal scholastics that would make a Soviet prosecutor blush.
I had to laugh at that part about blushing Soviet prosecutor. Steve Wells is a spinster and this alleged Bible contradiction is slander against the Bible and his accusations are not true. I pray he repents before it’s too late. How goes your Monday so far is the weather warming up yet?
Looks like rain later today, so I’m going to try to get outside “early” (10AM is early for a retiree) to rake for a little while. The 10-day forecast shows 5 days of 50F+ highs so we’re gradually getting there. How’s your acclimation to your new climate coming?

Good point: “its only in the beginning that Mary did not recognize Jesus but soon she did recognized him”.
Also good point about Luke 24:23: “Note the verse does not deny Mary encountering Jesus. The verse is about Mary and other women having met angels at Jesus’ grave.”
Amen! Thanks for reading this! Since this time of year there’s a lot of slander against Jesus with misinformation about Passion week I pray this help someone looking for answers. Your comment helps with search engine algorithm so thanks for your input Frank!!!
Excellent insight and analysis. Not a contradiction at all.
Blessings.
Amen not a contradiction indeed. I enjoy researching and answering these. I hope I can write one of these while I’m overseas next month but not sure about my internet access; I hope others guest posts will fill in most of my time away!!
Good job!
The skeptics don’t care to explain what they believe or why. They just attack the Bible, and that is because the Bible shows us as we are, sinners in need of a Savior.
Until we admit we are sinners, we are filled with shame. Even the supposedly shameless are filled with shame. That is why the shameless attack the Bible and the people who believe it with the greatest enthusiasm, that is, hatred. Because their attacks are emotional, they don’t make logical sense. In fact, they are not intended to make any logical sense. Their purpose is to shut up Christians.
You are right here: “ Because their attacks are emotional, they don’t make logical sense. In fact, they are not intended to make any logical sense. Their purpose is to shut up Christians.” So right. I see your blog get critics commenting; is that an ongoing thing often on your site??
In my Sunday School’s study of Hebrews, the class members are continually challenged to meet those with doubts. Your blog reminds me of the many ways this can be done. Thanks.
True blogging is one way that can be done! Glad you are on WordPress brother!
Logically argued. This reminds me of one of the early church’s confessions that Paul recorded in 1 Timothy 3:16, where it speaks of angels having seen Christ risen, but omits that humans who also did, but of course, Paul in other places reminds us that many people saw Christ after his resurrection.
“By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.”
Thanks for the encouragement. The angel and people seeing Jesus resurrection is another alleged contradiction also as well that the skeptic Annotated Bible asserts, which isn’t surprising I supposed and I have dealt with it on the blog before In past years. How are you
Praying for healing, for myself and others for whom medication is not a cure and a not-altogether-effective panacea. But grateful and content we have what we’re given, until That Day that we all long for arrives. I know now how difficult it is to be persistent in prayer, believing, after so long. Hope you all have settled in well at your new place. 🙂
You are such an inspiration, Dora. Praying for you.
And you for me, dear Mandy. Thank you! 💞💞
Dora, I am praying for you

Shameless. Steve Wells is absolutely shameless. God will not be mocked and that is what he is doing!!!!!
Indeed its incredible that he doesn’t see how shameful and how silly is the quality of his attacks on the Bible. You are right, God is not mocked! What days during the week do you have class?
Good job!
Aww thanks for the encouragement Jerome! I pray those looking to solve this challenge would find it during their online search!
I loved how you answer the skeptics rationally. This is great. I don’t know why I waste time with the atheists on YouTube referencing the Critics Annotated Bible
Thanks. It’s also skeptic not critic annotated Bible 😀
