I have heard well meaning Christians tell me that they like Presuppositional Apologetics. Which of course I’m happy to hear as an advocate of Presuppositional apologetics. They say that it is because we need to point out that nonbelievers have presuppositions. That’s true but Presuppositional apologetics is more than just pointing out non-Christians have presuppositions too.
Or sometimes people object to Presuppositional Apologetics that all it does is say non-Christians have presuppositions but its not enough to just say people have presuppositions. I agree its not just enough to say people have presuppositions; but that’s not the end goal of Presuppositional apologetics.
On page 52 of Cornelius Van Til’s book The Doctrine of Scripture he said:
In this whole approach it is forgotten that the question is not one of having or not having faith but of having the proper faith. Of course all men start from faith. But the point is that the non-Christian starts from faith in man as not a creature of God and as not a sinner before God, while the Christian starts with his faith in Christ. It is the object of faith that gives meaning to the faith one professes. There are only two alternatives. The object of the non-Christian’s faith is man as autonomous, while the object of the Christian’s faith is God as revealed in Christ and in Christ as revealed in Scripture. “There is no person on earth,” says Wolthuis, “who lives without faith of some sort.” 30 This is true, but it is not true that therefore the Christian’s faith stands on a par with the non-Christian’s faith as far as validity is concerned. It is the Christian’s faith in God as revealed in Christ that is true faith. It alone gives an intelligible foundation to scientific procedure. The Christian and the non-Christian position are never to be thought of as intellectually on a par with one another. The Christian’s faith is not a blind faith, as is the faith of the non-Christian. The non-Christian scientist may and does believe in the presence of order, but he has no warrant for doing so: His assumed philosophy of chance points to the opposite. The Christian’s position is not merely just as good as the nonChristian’s position. Christianity is the only position that does not per se take away the very foundation for intelligible scientific and philosophical procedure. Christianity is the only “rational” faith!
Notice its pointing out that the presuppositions of unbelieving worldview if it is assumed as true, is taken to its logical conclusion to show how the non-Christian worldview is false.

Interesting take. This brings up a question in my mind: How does the unbeliever “show us their faith by what they do?”
Do you think it is possible nonbelievers and believers show to others their beliefs by their action? Not perfectly always though…

Love this: “Christianity is the only “rational” faith!” So very true.
Thanks for the insight.
Amen thanks for reading this!!
Amen! “It is the Christian’s faith in God as revealed in Christ that is true faith.”🙌🙌🙌
Amen!!! Blessings to uou!!
Christianity is the only “rational” faith as Jesus is the proper (way) of objective (truth) and is always animated and full of (life)!
And amen!

RE: proper faith
Yes, everyone presupposes upon a set of beliefs, their faith, but is it a proper faith? This brings to mind that pseudo-Christians claim “faith,” but it’s a trust in false religious institutions rather than trusting in Jesus Christ as Savior.
Good point. As I am reading “Protestant Doctrine of Scripture” by Dr. Van TIl he takes no prisoner with critiquing unbelief including ROmanism! HOw did your Thursday go??
Glad Van Til did not accommodate Romanism. Wonder what he would have thought about all the compromise these days.
Ach. Came down with a nasty cold yesterday. I’m staying on the couch today under a blanket.
How did your Thursday go?

Good point from Van Til: “The object of the non-Christian’s faith is man as autonomous, while the object of the Christian’s faith is God as revealed in Christ and in Christ as revealed in Scripture. “
Thanks for highlighting that!
Indeed!
“the non-Christian starts from faith in man as not a creature of God and as not a sinner before God, while the Christian starts with his faith in Christ.”
Thanks for reading this. How does your Sunday at church looks like tomorrow??
It will be a gathering of sinners hunger for the WORD and the presence of God. We will also have our commemoration of the LORD’s Day tomorrow.

God has been good to you to allow you to teach such deep things
Correct. It is the object of faith which is the defining mark of the individual; their starting point or first step, which reveals their ultimate commitment. Van Til hit on something so profound that after you read and grasp his point you are like, “Duh! I should have seen that.” The reason why you can’t make sense of reality apart from the Triune God of Scripture is because it’s His reality. He created it.
Great post brother!

Van Til is so biblical and profound in that way! That’s encouraging to hear that I’m not the only one. How are you??
I’m doing good. Been extremely busy. I went back to being bivocational last year (late Feb 2022). Doesn’t leave much room for writing or a lot of reading, other than that which I do for my pastoral work.
I appreciated your article. As you said “it’s good to know there are others of the same mindset.” Keep up the good work.
Nailed it!
Thanks
