I was always curious about the church’s interpretation of various Old Testament prophecies of Christ, especially among sound Gospel preachers, do you have the same curiosity too?  If so this work might be for you!  This is actually an issue from the Free Grace Broadcaster for Spring 2022.  I have been receiving different issues from them since I order booklets of famous old preachers and teachers such as Charles Spurgeon but this is the first time I read one of the Free Grace Broadcaster since the topic of Messianic Prophecies fascinated me.  My soul was fed reading this, like how my soul delights with reading sound Christians preachers from previous centuries with the combination of my fascination with Messianic prophecies which made this read a savoring spiritual delight!

When you struggle to pray, does it blow you away that the Spirit prays for you?  Yes this is true, Romans 8:26-27 teaches this.  This booklet is a look at Romans 8:26-27 by my favorite long-ago preacher, Charles Spurgeon, who provide some spiritual thoughts and reflection and encouragement with this truth of the Spirit’s ministry.  This book is from an April 11th, 1880 sermon that Spurgeon preached at his church the Metropolitan Tabernacle.  Whether you struggle to pray or need some spiritual encouragement I recommend this.  I read this while I was on vacation and wondered if Spurgeon ever thought that what he has to say would minister to someone 142 years later.

Want to read a short devotional to encourage praying to God? This booklet by my favorite Victorian era English preacher Charles Spurgeon provide some spiritual thoughts and reflection and practical pointers about praying to God.  This is based upon a sermon on Jesus’ words in Mark 11:24 that Spurgeon preached on August 12th, 1860 in England.  Though it is over 160 years since he preached it and when I read this nevertheless I think what Spurgeon has to say is timeless and spiritually edifying.

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus, yet what implications does this have for the Christian life?  In this booklet published by Chapel Library my favorite Victorian era English preacher Charles Spurgeon answers that question.  This is based upon a sermon that Spurgeon delivered on August 17th, 1862 yet is relevant for today.  I was blown away thinking that Spurgeon was twenty eight years old when he preached this sermon at London’s Metropolitan Tabernacle.  It made me appreciate what God has done through this man to bless God’s people than and also now with his writings.

Want to read a short but edifying devotional on the Passover in Exodus and how it points to Christ while also challenging parents to teach children the Gospel?  This devotional booklet might be for you!  This is based upon a sermon by the famous Victorian era English preacher Charles Spurgeon that he preached for a Lord’s Day church service based upon the text of Exodus 12:21-27.  While the book doesn’t say when this message was delivered, I looked it up online and found out that the sermon was originally preached on October 23, 1887.  It is amazing to think that 135 years later readers in a different century in a different Continent can find it not only relevant but refreshing.  This speaks to the testimony of how Bible based teaching that’s focus on the Gospel has staying power.

Christianity and Idealism van til

For some reason the last few weeks I’ve been seeing people bring up objection to the apologetics of Cornelius Van Til, the Father of Presuppositional Apologetics, as someone who was caught up with the philosophy of Idealism than Christianity.  I don’t think that is accurate.  Most people even among Presuppositionalists know that Van Til has actually written against Idealism in a book titled rather unsurprisingly Christianity and Idealism.  The title Christianity and Idealism is a play on the title of the book Christianity and Liberalism, a classic work by J. Greshem Machen’s refuting theological liberalism and distinguishing it as being not compatible with orthodox Christianity.  Even the title of Van Til’s book is meant to communicate Van Til was going against Idealism.

I hope in the future to comment some more about the objection that Van Til’s apologetics is nothing more than Idealism.  For now in this post I want to share how you can get the PDF of this book free.

A Return to the Gospel

J.I. Packer. Return to the Gospel: Introductory Essay to the Death of Death.  Pensacola, FL: Chapel Library, n.d. 40 pp.

4 out of 5

Free: Chapel Library

This is a famous essay by theologian J.I. Packer that is the introduction to John Owens’ Puritan classic The Death of Death in the Death of Christ.  Packer’s own introductory essay is itself an edifying read and I’m glad Chapel Library turned it into a booklet!  This booklet is both refreshing spiritually and led me to pray for myself and others to be faithful to the Biblical message.  I think believers of Christ can never grow tired of being reminded what is the Biblical Gospel as opposed to water-down modern day man-centered presentation of Christianity.

Spurgeon's Catechism With Scriptural Proofs

Charles Spurgeon. Spurgeon’s Catechism.  Apollo, PA: Ichthus Publications, August 16, 2014. 54 pp.

4 out of 5

Purchase: Amazon

Are you looking for a resource to go over with kids about Christianity?  This might be a resource for you to consider!  I know some reading this review might think “Catechism?” and wonder if this might be Roman Catholic.  It is actually Baptist.  This Catechism was edited by the Prince of Preacher Charles Spurgeon from a Catechism based upon the Baptist Catechism of 1693.

This booklet consists of 82 questions and answers.  I used this to go over it with my kids and they enjoyed it.  I did explain to them that ultimately we are to go with what the Bible says but we also do appreciate what others learn about what the Bible says whether at our present local church or also in the Past.  It was helpful to look up the Scriptural citation in context and discuss the passages that are Scriptural proofs for the answers and doctrines.  I was struck at the questions at time being of great depths for my kids (you can’t say this work is shallow) and also its simplicity.  I also appreciate that it wasn’t just all doctrinal (and doctrines matter!) but also it has a lot of questions for the ten commandments.

The biggest thing that I found helpful with these questions and answers is the conversations I have with my kids because of it.  I plan to go over other Baptist Catechisms with my kids after this one and this was a good place to start with my elementary school age kids.  I used this as a family worship going over one or two questions each time.  They were part of my family worship plan in which I would go over the book of Genesis with my girls and days when I was exhausted from all the preparation of studying through Genesis I would use this Catechism.  I do recommend this as a resource.

Do you want to learn about God’s attributes from the well treasured Psalm 139 and wonder what the famous preacher Charles Spurgeon has to say about this famous chapter?  This booklet is an excerpt from Spurgeon’s Treasury of David, Spurgeon’s classic commentary on the Psalms.  I picked out this booklet to go through it with our church youth (pre-teens and teens) as I want them to think about God’s attribute and also because I have benefited from other booklets by Charles Spurgeon that was published by

Family Duty by John Bunyan

John Bunyan. Family Duty.  Pensacola, FL: Chapel Library, July 12th 2016. 35 pp.

Want a booklet on a biblical view of family?  Specifically would you want to have something to read concerning the roles of a husband, wife, father, mother, and children?  This is one that I would recommend.  I read this in one sitting and pulled nearly an all-night reading since it was spiritually edifying.  This booklet is by the famous preacher and Christian author John Bunyan.  It is amazing to think that he died in 1688 but his work is relevant for the 21st Century; that is a testimony of how when writers focus on being biblical it always is timely.

Spiritual Peace

Charles H. Spurgeon. Spiritual Peace.  Pensacola, FL: Chapel Library, May 13th 2016. 23 pp.

4 out of 5

Free: Chapel Library

Purchase: Amazon (99 cents for Kindle)

This was another booklet by Charles Spurgeon that I picked out to go through with our church youth (pre-teens and teens) concerning the topic of having peace that I thought was a relevant topic as our kids and many like them are going through a time of not being physically attending school, isolated at home and at times going though things in 2020-2021 with the Covid situation.  This booklet was published by Chapel Library.  Spurgeon is among my favorite past preachers to read and while I have appreciated other booklets and sermons from him, this specific work wasn’t bad but it didn’t stand out as much as some of the other works I enjoyed from Spurgeon.  Still Spurgeon still presents biblical truths and it is edifying for believers and evangelistic towards non-Christians.
