Issues in Biblical Anthropology by Owen Strachan: The Master’s Seminary 2021 Winter Elective

I have been waiting for this to be online for awhile now and I just saw that this is online!  Dr. Owen Strachan is Provost and Research Professor of Theology at Grace Bible Theological Seminary (he just moved there from Mid-Western Seminary).  He specializes in the area of biblical anthropology (theology of man).  One of the things from 2020 onwards that has become very important in much of the political discussion is what is one’s view of the nature of man.  I just bought his book titled “Reenchanting Humanity” and Lord willing I want to finish it sometime this year and write a review.

Here is his official biography:

Dr. Owen Strachan is Provost and Research Professor of Theology at Grace Bible Theological Seminary. Before coming to GBTS he served as Associate Professor of Christian Theology and Director of the Residency Ph.D Program at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He earned his Ph.D from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, his M.Div from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and his AB from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. He is married and the father of three children. Strachan has authored numerous books, including Reenchanting Humanity: A Theology of Mankind, The Pastor as Public Theologian: Reclaiming a Lost Vision (with Kevin Vanhoozer) and the forthcoming Christianity and Wokeness: How the Social Justice Movement is Hijacking the Gospel – and the Way to Stop it (Salem Books, July 2021). Strachan is the former president of the Council on Biblical Manhood & Womanhood, the former director of The Center for Public Theology at MBTS and is the President of Reformanda Ministries.

Jason Lisle “The Ultimate Proof of Creation” Lecture at The Master’s Seminary

Somehow I never shared this lecture Dr. Jason Lisle presented to the students of The Master’s Seminary on “The Ultimate Proof of Creation” even though I thought I had it posted on here before and have told people to look for it in our blog.  Jason Lisle is a trained astronomer turn Christian apologists has over the years taught on the defense of the Christian faith and also a Christian view of Science.  I have in the past shared other resources from him including his “Nuclear Strength Apologetics Lectures at Heritage Grace Community Church” but I thought it would be good to share as future reference and resource for others a “one shot” summary of Presuppositional apologetics as opposed to a longer series of lectures.  Both have their place.

Videos: Introduction to Biblical Theology With Thomas Schreiner

Dr. Thomas Schreiner is a New Testament professor at Southern Seminary.  My favorite work by Schreiner thus far has been his “Faith Alone: The Doctrine of Justification.”

Free Historical Theology Seminary Lectures: Reformation onwards by Dr. Nathan Busenitz

All throughout the month I have posting resources and reviews of things related to the Reformation in light of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.  Here’s another one of those resource posts!

The following below are seminary lectures by Nathan Busenitz for a course at the Master’s of Divinity level on historical theology from the Reformation onward.  There are 26 lectures total and 11 of them alone are on the Reformation.  Lectures 12-15 also cover the Puritans which those who love Reformation history and Reformed theology often enjoy also as well.  What a treat!

The Master’s Seminary 2017 Faculty Lectures: Believers, The Bible and the LGBTQIA community

For some reason I did not realized until now that the Master’s Seminary’s 2017 Faculty Lectures was on the topic of “Believers, The Bible and the LGBTQIA community.”  Every year the Seminary has their faculty lectures on various topics around late January to February.

This topic would be very relevant given all the issues today.  There are six lectures total in this series below.

2017 Seminary Lectures: The Reformation by Dr. Carl Trueman

In the past I have appreciated Dr. Carl Trueman’s teaching on Medieval theology and also the Reformation available through Itunes University.  He’s also written a more practical book on the Reformation for today for the general Christian readers titled Reformation: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow by Carl Trueman.

Every year The Master Seminary brings in a scholar to teach for the Winterim and for this year (2017) they have Dr. Trueman of Westminster Theological Seminary taught on the history of the Reformation.

The entire 19 lectures in video form have been made available online for free!

Dr. William Barrick: Prophets in the Life of a Believers

Dr. William Barrick is an Old Testament scholar that I have been much encouraged with (If you don’t know who he is see the short biography below after the videos).  Here’s a description of this conference:

The prophetic books of the Old Testament are some of the more difficult portions of the Bible for believers to understand and apply. They are often skipped in entirety or merely skimmed through. Yet at the same time some of our favorite prophetic passage about Jesus find their place in those books. How are we to understand the prophets? What relevance do they have for contemporary Christians? These, along with other questions will be answered during this seminar. As a focus to show how the principles work in real life, the focus will be the book of Zechariah.

He spoke for a conference called “Prophets in the Life of a Believers” that focuses on prophecy at Word of Grace Church in Battle Ground, WA.  While it took place last fall it was only recently that Dr. Barrick shared this on his website.

The Power of the Christian Worldview in Evangelism by Jay Wegter

Jay Wegter an instructor in Christian Ministries at The Master’s College has taught on the topic of “The Power of the Christian Worldview in Evangelism” that is available in two parts on Youtube.  First let me share his biography:

An experienced pastor and Bible teacher, Mr. Wegtter has a B.A. degree from Christian Heritage College and a Master of Divinity degree from The Master’s Seminary.  He founded Gospel for Life in 2005, which is a training ministry which assists local churches in fulfilling The Great Commission through evangelistic outreach and through curriculum designed to keep the Gospel central in discipleship.  Jay is co-author of the book, “This Little Church had None,” which was the featured gift book at the Shepherds’ Conference in 2009.  He has written other resources on the Christian life and is a professional artist.

Rich Bargas: Humility in Defending the Faith

I enjoyed this sermon by Rich Bargas who teaches at The Master’s Seminary.

The sermon is titled “Humility in Defending the Faith.”

I think young men who are into internet apologetics would do good to hear this sermon since Dr. Bargas addressed the imbalance among some who might not necessarily Christ-like in their apologetics and often at the neglect at personal evangelism and other maturity in their life outside of their internet activity.

“The Need for Christian Intellectual Engagement” Acts 17:22-31 by Abner Chou

Pay attention to the name Abner Chou as I believe he will be more well known in the larger Evangelical world of Scholarship in the next few years.

Abner Chou is Assistant Professor of Biblical Studies at The Master’s College and Seminary. From what I understand he turned down his college acceptance to Princeton or some other Ivy League School to attend the Master’s College.  After the Master’s College he went on to the Master’s Seminary where he completed M.Div., Th.M., and Th.D.  This year he was a speaker for the Truth and Life Conference and was a seminar speaker for the Inerrancy Summit.  He is currently working on an exegetical commentary on the book of Lamentation for Logos’ Evangelical Exegetical Commentary.

Dr. Chou recently spoke at the Seminary’s Chapel from Acts 17 on the subject of the need for Christian Intellectual Engagement.

I’ve halfway through the video.  What is your thoughts on the message?
