Practical Steps to Health and Wellness

I pray that through this journey, as we’ve investigated what it is to have a Theology of Health, you now better understand why we should strive to live life as optimally as we can. I hope you have seen the theological implications of your body, your eating and your exercise.  I hope you can identify idolatry in your pursuit along with all the ways that your motivations can manifest into the glorification of God. So now that there is a firm foundation to the “ought” behind why we should steward our health, I want to leave you with some practical steps to help you make some meaningful changes in your life.

Glorifying God with Our Health

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ” Colossians 3:23-24 

 

Sometimes in our Christian walk we find ourselves separating our lives into different spheres. In one realm we have the sacred. We have our church time, our Bible study time, our prayer time, our set apart times for evangelical events or ministry. Then, in another realm, we have our secular engagements. This would be our jobs, our eating, our exercise, our hobbies, our menial tasks that we indulge in because they give us enjoyment or they are just a necessary part of life. Yet, I would like to propose to you today, there are no separate spheres in our life. There is only one mode that we operate in as blood bought sons and daughters of Christ and that we should always, in all things and in all ways, glorify God in EVERYTHING that we do. So if this is indeed true and we have this calling on our lives to interweave our worship of God in the grand tasks and the seemingly pointless, how do we accomplish this? How do we glorify God better with our jobs or hobbies or, as my main point in this series has been, our health? My goal today is to help you better understand these questions and develop a robust biblical framework to practically living out the Glorification of God in all aspects of your life.

The Theology of Exercise

“I need to exercise!” How often have you said that to yourself recently? Why do you feel the need to say that? Or maybe, if you haven’t pondered the desire to exercise, have you found yourself lamenting the fact that you can’t physically do as much as you used to or want to? Maybe you don’t have the energy or physical function to play with your kids or fully commit yourself to a church service project. We all have an idea of what our optimal function should be but unfortunately for most of us, the optimal is not our normal. We all naturally realize that God has created us to have a physical communion and interact with His creation in a very meaningful and material way, yet, how high of a priority to we place on realizing that? My hope and prayer today is that you will discover a deeper theological motivation to consider the benefits of exercise both in a physical and a spiritual context.

The Theology of Eating

“I’m hungry, but I probably shouldn’t eat that.” I have no doubt that all of us have uttered that phrase at some point in our life. Whether it’s because we weren’t feeling well and the food may make us sick or we have some sort of weight-loss goal and that second slice of wedding cake would for sure derail our diet. There seems to be an intrinsic “ought” behind our decisions to eat or abstain from certain foods but are these “oughts” merely pragmatic in nature or is there an underlying theological impetus driving these decisions? My goal in this article is to develop a theological framework that undergirds how we approach food and how and what we choose to eat on a regular basis.

The Theology of Our Bodies

“It’s my body and I can do whatever I want with it!” How often have you heard this as an underlying reason for a person’s autonomy to make whatever health choice they want? I regularly hear this in my career as a physical therapist as a reason for individuals to make horrendous choices regarding their health that have real world implications. For instance, I care for many people that have Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (http://www.webmd.com/diabetes/type-2-diabetes-guide/type-2-diabetes#1) and despite being given a plethora of cause and effect data regarding how to manage their disease with diet and exercise they continue to eat poorly and remain sedentary as the disease ravages their bodies. However, while most of my patients are not Christians, are we followers of Christ any different? Is there any reason or divine responsibility for us to take care of ourselves regarding our health or are we free to do whatever we want as long as it isn’t sin? My hope in this article is to give a biblical framework for how God views our bodies and the responsibility He has given to us.

The Theology of Health

During the New Year, one of the main focuses for a lot people is on evaluating the parts of their life that they want to improve and, more often than not, one of those things is to “get in shape”. This is true across the board for Christians and non-Christians alike. According to a Nielsen survey from 2015 the top 2 New Year’s resolutions are to “lose weight” and to “stay fit and healthy.” (http://www.nielsen.com/us/en/insights/news/2015/2015s-top-new-years-resolution-fitness.html)
Now while these goals may be ubiquitous amongst all Americans, the question that I want to pose for the Christian is “Why?” Why do you want to be healthier? What are the intrinsic motivations that are driving you to put forth the time and resources to obtain these goals? Are these pursuits merely pragmatic or selfish or is there something deeper spiritually that undergirds these yearnings to take care of yourself?
