Establish the need: Do you appreciate older men of God who are leaders?
Purpose: We need to internalize six truths from 2 Kings 2 in order to relate to older generation and younger generation of men of God in a biblical way.
- We need to know older Men of God won’t always be with us (v.1-6)
- We need to take up the mantle of older Men of God who departed (v.7-14)
- We need to not idolize older men of God who departed (v.15-18)
- We need to realize the next generation men of God will have different work (v.19-22)
- We need to be warn not to mock the next generation men of God (v.23-25)
- We need to look for one who turn death to life (v.19-22)
We need to look for one who turn death to life (19-22)
Passage: “Then the men of the city said to Elisha, “Behold now, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad and the land is unfruitful.” 20 He said, “Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it.” So they brought it to him. 21 He went out to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, “Thus says the Lord, ‘I have purified these waters; there shall not be from there death or unfruitfulness any longer.’” 22 So the waters have been purified to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.”
Proof
- We already went over this passage.
- But I want to make an observation in verse 21b: “Thus says the Lord, ‘I have purified these waters; there shall not be from there death or unfruitfulness any longer.’”
- Sometimes we focus on men of God that God has used.
- But notice here it is the Lord who did the miracle.
- We too need to acknowledge the Lord who is the one who turn death to life.
- We already seen Elijah is like Moses, Elisha is like Joshua.
- In the New Testament we also have someone like Elijah: John the Baptist.
- The One after John the Baptist is Jesus, who is like Elisha; but greater than Elisha!
- Whereas it was God who purified the water in Jericho, when it comes to Jesus He Himself purify water in John 2, and so Jesus is greater than Elisha!
- May we look to God, may we look to Jesus who is God, as the one who can turn death to life!
Practice
- Christians: Make sure you look to Jesus more than you look at men of God; men of God will disappoint you! Look to Jesus! Look to God!s
- Non-Christians: Have you trusted in Jesus Christ as the One who can give you eternal life? Trust in Jesus today!
This is a great lesson I want to check out point 2. Where can I find it?

Thanks for this good outline message! Yes, we have a tendency to exalt Christian leaders rather than glorifying God.
So true. And extreme form of that of a pseudo Christianity is Catholicism elevating the pope. This is a sin for tenancy we have. We need to watch our hearts often to guard ourselves. Wow you up extra early this morning! Wow
Good example regarding the pope! Yeah, I was up at 3:45AM this morning which is early even for me.
Amen brother Jimmy!
