Greg Bahnsen is my favorite apologist and has shaped me in so many ways. He’s one of my role models with his example of scholarship, intellect, boldness to defend the faith, his desire to be biblical and also his pastoral heart. And everything he did was so intense.
Here is a quick bio of Bahnsen:
Greg L. Bahnsen, (1948-1995), was an ordained minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church and a full time Scholar in Residence for the Southern California Center for Christian Studies. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Southern California, specializing in the theory of knowledge. He previously received the B.A. (magna cum laude, philosophy) from Westmont College, and then simultaneously earned the M.Div. and Th.M. degrees from Westminster Theological Seminary. Dr. Bahnsen lectured to a broad range of evangelical Christian groups at many colleges and conferences. He was an experienced apologist and debater, a clear and cogent teacher of the Christian worldview who was devoted to training believers in understanding and applying the Christian faith to every area of life. He published numerous scholarly articles, a number of well-known books, and has over 1,500 recorded lectures and sermons.
Among those 1,500 lectures Bahnsen taught a two part series titled “Worldview Apologetics (Two Part series).”
I thought this was a good introduction to Worldview apologetics. Bahnsen does a great job breaking it down simply and showing the problem of unbiblical worldview.
I love hearing the questions and the laughters from the audience in these two lectures. I thought I learn something new in these lectures specifically with his point of how to answer those who say they want to believe but they can’t; Bahnsen made a good point to point out to such an individual that this can indicate how sinful someone can be that they would not come to Christ even if they say they want to, and after saying this to then share the Gospel at that point. In these two lectures Bahnsen does talk about philosophical problems and self-defeaters of false worldviews but there is a pastoral dimension in these lectures.
This is also a great introduction to Presuppositional Apologetics.
Here are the MP3s:
Interesting point about those “who say they want to believe but they can’t; Bahnsen made a good point that this can indicate how sinful someone is that they would not come to Christ even if they say they want to.”
Thanks for reading this! That part of my post was grammatically awkward I just edited the post to better communicate what I was saying. Grateful for you Frank! Have a blessed Tuesday!
Thanks for the great resource. There is always so much to learn from Bahnsen.
Blessings.
Indeed there’s always so much to learn from Bahnsen and I’m glad so much of his materials are made available for free online for people today! Hope your day is spiritual and productive with all you are doing for God!
Thanks for the MP3s. I listened to Lesson 1 while driving to the library and doing chores. Bahnsen had a great way of breaking down presuppositionalism for us T-101 types. I enjoyed how he puts worldly philosophy in its place. I wonder what Bahnsen would have thought about evangelicals like Sproul and Geisler who were so infatuated with Thomas Aquinas and his Aristotelian-based natural law?
I did appreciate him breaking things down. I also appreciates how he said the point is not for everyone to be philosophical like a professor would be; Bahnsen did break it down Sesame Street Style for the rest of us, while not sacrificing rigor! Wish more people can teach like he did, and I pray I can do that too…speaking of Sproul, have you heard Sproul’s debate with Bahnsen??
I haven’t heard the Bahnsen-Sproul debate. I checked YouTube and I see it’s available. I have to listen to it one of these days.
That reminds me that I’ve been meaning to listen to Bahnsen’s 1992 debate with Catholic apologist Jerry Matatics and priest Michael Manning for years. I see that’s also free on YouTube, Gotta do it.
