Note: I have been posting a lot of apologetics this week.  Here’s something more practical!

I love Jerry Bridges who have written many wonderful books on Christian holy living.  Like other books by Bridges this title was edifying and helpful.  Here in this work Jerry Bridges focuses on Christian relationship with other believers and also relationship to the church.  In our individualistic day and age this book is very relevant.

Note: Posting this later than normal since I had to wake up early and teach a Bible study online for a church overseas and was reviewing things for that last night than working on the blog.  I realized it is going to be the end of the year!  There’s some books I finished for 2020 that I will post review of them next year; didn’t get them rolling out in time!

Who am I

Jerry Bridges. Who Am I? Identity in Christ.  Adelphi, Maryland: Cruciform Press, February 28, 2012.  95 pp.

Purchase: Amazon

What does trusting in Jesus Christ means for your new identity as a Christian?  In this book author Jerry Bridges explores the Christian’s new identity biblically.  He does this by applying what in systematic theology is called the Order of Salvation to the question of who a believer is.  By Order of Salvation I mean what God has done to save believers from their sins and the penalty and power of sin.

If you follow us on our Facebook page and Twitter you no doubt know that every morning we share quotes from the theologian and apologist John Frame.

Here’s one quote from his book Doctrine of the Word of God:

theologians-serious-error-john-frame-quote

Obviously John Frame here is not saying every theologian makes this error of chopping the Scriptures; nor that just because one is a theologian it therefore means one will make that mistake.  Actually everyone is prone to making this blunder of “reporting” on segments of Scripture in isolation.

Which means we must watch ourselves even in how we read Scripture.

I’m going to go on a tangent from Frame’s book with this quote as a spring board to examine three practical examples of how people including myself can over-emphasize one aspect of Scripture over and against another:

The Transforming Power of the Gospel Jerry Bridges

Jerry Bridges.  The Transforming Power of the Gospel.  Colorado Springs, CO: NavPress, December 22nd 2011. 192 pp.

I finished this book four days before the death of the author, Jerry Bridges.   Upon finishing this book I thought to myself, “I’m glad that such a saint is alive and with us.”  Of course Jerry Bridges has been promoted to glory and in heaven.  I am glad that by God’s grace and providence He ordained Jerry Bridges to author this book.  This book has become one of my favorite book on how the Gospel fuel our sanctification and currently is my recommendations to those struggling with holiness.

jerry bridges passing

Last night I saw online from Justin Taylor’s social media that Christian writer and preacher Jerry Bridges was hospitalized.  It turned out that today he passed away and was promoted to eternity.

I appreciate his ministry very much.  I just finished last week his book The Transforming Power of the Gospel which I was planning to write and post a review on our blog tomorrow.  I have also appreciated other works of his, whether physical books or audio books.  Sadly I’ve only heard him preached once.  But that one time I heard him preached I remember older seasoned saints were deeply moved and edified.

The Pursuit of Holiness book Jerry Bridges

The beauty of this book is its simplicity with how the author Jerry Bridges communicate the truth of the Christian need to pursue holiness. While the writing is simple that does not mean that the book is superficial. Far from it: the author truly understands our human nature and what we as sinners are really like. The biggest profit I got from the book was Bridges concern that today too many Christians are confused concerning God’s responsibility and man’s responsibility in the area of sanctification. Bridges’ big thesis is that God has called us to pursue holiness and the thought of “let go, and let God…” is not biblical. As I was reading this I thought about the classes I had and books I read in the area of biblical counseling and it’s no surprise later in the book I find him quoting Jay Adams. This is a Gospel driven book with practical, challenging look beyond the surface of our sins; there were times Bridges confesses to sins that seems almost trivial since they are “respectable” sins today, but Bridges goes to the heart of the matter to show how it was sinful before God’s presence. I enjoyed the reminder from this book that we are to pursue loving obedience to God rather than “victory” from a sin. Bridges argues that a “victory-defeat” paradigm towards sanctification doesn’t work because it still ends up being about us and our pride rather than God and the Spirit. Excellent work, I only wished I read this book when I was much younger in my faith. But I suppose it’s better late than never. More mature Christians will still benefit from this work.
