Thanks for the listing, Jim. I always have to look for the Theology 101 topics. I enjoyed the “Paradoxes of Common Grace” article. What I can’t figure out is why the two evangelical pastor bloggers who post on that site are so attracted to G.K. Chesterton? They reference him prominently and often. Chesterton was no doubt a witty intellectual, but the Roman gospel he propagated was and is opposed to the Gospel of grace.
I looked through that website a little closer and noticed that they appear to be conservative Presbyterians. I don’t know why there is a stream like them who are ok with quoting Chesterton but would never quote Arminians as favorably even though Arminians who the same view of justification and are closer to Reformed Presbyterians. Things that makes me scratch my head. At one time I was considering reading more Chesterton but I’ve also read a few quotes that really disturbed me concerning his attack on sovereign grace and it made me realize as witty as he is with his memorable lines, he is going to be a poor exegete of Scripture if he ever was going to try to be one. Maybe it has something to do with him being witty that is attractive to those who otherwise would not be into him if he was otherwise? What do you think?
I don’t mean to activate the air raid siren every time someone links to a blog or web site that’s soft on Catholicism, but this fascination with Chesterton among evangelicals disappoints me greatly. I haven’t read a single book by Chesterton (and don’t plan to), but I know he was an enthusiastic defender of Rome’s gospel of sacramental grace and merit. The pastor of the SBC church we left in 2015 was a huge fan of Chesterton. From what I observed from him, being conversant with Chesterton is a litmus test of intellectual credibility in some evangelical circles. As you mentioned, young spit and vinegar Calvinists wouldn’t touch an Arminian apologist’s writings with a ten-foot pole, but being conversant with Chesterton is a requirement if you want to be taken seriously as an intellectual. I would guess that just about every evangelical pastor would know enough not to quote a Mormon apologist or philosopher in one of their sermons, but to quote Chesterton, who propagated a false gospel, is not only acceptable, it accords the speaker an enviable intellectual sashay, in their minds anyway. Chesterton was no friend of the Gospel of grace or the Reformation, so why do evangelicals venerate him? By embracing Chesterton, they’re hoping they are perceived as witty intellectuals themselves.
Here’s a relevant article on Chesterton’s take on Protestantism from a Catholic source.

I think your observation is dead on. After your last comment I looked up their recommendation lists (earlier I looked at their about page)…in that list there is too much of Chesterton. I’ve decided to yank their post out of this Presup round up.
Thanks, Jim. I’m really amazed at how popular Chesterton and mother Teresa are in evangelical circles.

Thank you Vince for the reblog! How are you doing?
Great collection of links Jim
Thanks! How are you doing with your sugar intake and exercise?
I am actually working on a post about that right now.
The program ended on t’s 13th but we are going to keep going so I have not had sugar for 33 days now.
Not as restrictive going forward, more about weighing food choices and splurging when it’s something you really want and you feel is worth it. Cake on a birthday or a favorite meal out for example, not just take out tacos because it’s fast and easy.
You need desperately so to read my little book Wilderness Cry. It presents a philosophy never before espoused. It defined the essence of our Supreme being and all Its Attributes. Amazon labels it A REAL EYE OPENER. Thanks. Hilary L Hunt MD
Thanks for the… we discussed the very same Job Scriptures in Bible Study tonight as Putting God on Trial… thanking God for the confirmation.
Wow encouraged to hear that! May the Lord bless you and others in that Bible study!
