For today’s post we will tackle the question the Skeptic Annotated Bible asked: Was Solomon David’s second or fourth son by Bathsheba?
Here are the two answers which the skeptic believes shows a Bible contradiction:
Second
“Then Nathan went to his house. Later the Lord struck the child that Uriah’s [a]widow bore to David, so that he was very sick…Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and went in to her and slept with her; and she gave birth to a son, and he named him Solomon. Now the Lord loved him,” (2 Samuel 12:15, 24)
Fourth
“These were the children born to him in Jerusalem: Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon, four by Bath-shua the daughter of Ammiel;” (1 Chronicles 3:5)
(All Scriptural quotation comes from the New American Standard Bible)
Here’s a closer look at whether or not there is a contradiction:
- When dealing with skeptics’ claim of Bible contradictions it seems one can never be reminded enough of what exactly is a contradiction. A contradiction occurs when two or more claims conflict with one another so that they cannot simultaneously be true in the same sense and at the same time. To put it another way, a Bible contradiction exists when there are claims within the Bible that are mutually exclusive in the same sense and at the same time.
- One should be skeptical of whether this is a Bible contradiction given the Skeptic Annotated Bible’s track record of inaccurately handling the Bible. See the many examples of their error which we have responded to in this post: Collection of Posts Responding to Bible Contradictions. Of course that does not take away the need to respond to this claim of a contradiction, which is what the remainder of this post will do. But this observation should caution us to slow down and look more closely at the passages cited by the Skeptic Annotated Bible to see if they interpreted the passages properly to support their conclusion that it is a Bible contradiction.
- The skeptic tries to pit the passage 2 Samuel 12:15, 24 as affirming the claim “Solomon was David’s second son by Bathsheba” against 1 Chronicles 3:5 as affirming “Solomon was David’s fourth son by Bathsheba.”
- Notice none of the passages cited by the skeptics actually use any numerical term such as “second” or “fourth” to describe the birth chronological order of Bathsheba’s sons.
- From 2 Samuel 12:15, 24 it seems reasonable that “Solomon was David’s second son by Bathsheba.” In the context after David lost his firstborn with Bathsheba the narrative mentioned the next child being born is Solomon.
- Yet even with point 5, I would not be dogmatic though I think it is reasonable to expect Solomon as the second son of Bathsheba.
- 1 Chronicles 3:5 gives us a genealogy. But there are instances in the Bible where genealogy mentioned names but not in birth order.
- With the Noahic genealogy Shem is mentioned first in in Genesis 5:32; 6:10; 7:13 and 1 Chronicles 1:4. Yet Genesis 10:21 mentioned Shem has an older brother who was Japheth.
- Jesus’ genealogy in Matthew 1 goes from the past to recent past as the way it progresses. Yet in Matthew 1:1 it states Jesus as “the son of David, the son of Abraham.” This order is the opposite of the rest of Matthew’s genealogy’s chronological order.
- Given these examples, we need to be cautious with thinking 1 Chronicles 3:5 as a genealogy would have to be in chronological temporal order of birth.
- The reason why 1 Chronicles 3:5 might have stated Solomon last among the sons of Bathsheba to give the other brothers prominence since Solomon is already well known as the king. There’s a sense that though 1-2 Chronicles is about David’s house reigning in Judah yet the the first few chapter in 1 Chronicles gives us genealogies of others including Levitical priests before it got to David’s descendants. So we should not be surprised that the most important person might not be the first focus in the beginning of the opening chapters in 1 Chronicles.
- There is no contradiction here. Seems the skeptic needs to learn of How to Handle Bible Contradictions.
- We shouldn’t miss that worldviews are at play even with the skeptic’s objection to Christianity. The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview. […] Was Solomon David’s second or fourth son by Bathsheba? […]
Well done. Another great example of biblical logic to refute the skeptic.
Shalom!
Thanks Michael! I appreciate the encouragement! Enjoy studying for these every week and rolling them out! Have a blessed Friday for today brother!!!
I agree with Michael. Now that you have me thinking of genealogies, it always amazes me how God’s prophets (by His Spirit) kept track of family bloodlines right up to the time of Jesus. Then it was no longer necessary, all to keep our eye on the ball, which is the fulfillment of every last promise of God for our ultimate redemption. What other book on earth does that through two thousand years of history?!!
Actually more than that going all the way back to Adam!
Yep! So it is amazing to think the prophecies goes from Genesis to Revelation!
I love your comment! Especially the powerful last question: “What other book on earth does that through two thousand years of history?!!” There is no book like the BIble! The prophecies and the various literary forms used to predict Christ over thousands of years…so soo amazing!!!
Thanks for this thorough refutation of another alleged contradiction. I’m used to Steve/Stephen Wells’ cherry picking and grasping at straws, but…C’MON!!!
Steve Wells lack of attention to details is rather astounding…he’s graspoing so much straws in his listing, that if I ever need a straw in a burger joint I know who to call up! LOL. Speaking of burgers, had any NY special dogs or burgers lately? I had a California hotdog at our neighborhood hot dog place last night when we had premarital counseling with a couple….been so long since I had fancy hotdog!
Lol. Steve Wells should write a book, “Mastering the Art of Grasping at Straws.” Chapter One – Present an argument as rock solid even though the available evidence contradicts it. Chapter Two – Repeat. Etc. Etc.
RE: Hot dogs
My favorite retirement lunch is defrosting a Zweigles’ white hot, cutting it down the middle, and laying in a pepperjack cheese stick, and then broiling it in the toaster oven until the cheese begins to melt. So good!

You make a very good refutation. But may I point out something?
In point number 7, you give three instances about bible genealogies not being in order of birth. I think you need to finish the sentence on point number three. Or am I missing something?
Wow thank you Douglas for pointing that out! I just fixed that sir
I don’t often give the attention that it deserves with genealogy, thanks for noticing that some genealogies aren’t always stating chronological birth order in point 7.
Thanks for dropping by and reading this brother
I’m a sister. Knowing that about the genealogy solves the problem.
Good point: “The reason why 1 Chronicles 3:5 might have stated Solomon last among the sons of Bathsheba to give the other brothers prominence since Solomon is already well known as the king.” The order of the names need not require that it be birth order.
Exactly! Thanks for reading this! I hope your Saturday is going well
Logically this silences the critics. Now they just need to keep their mouths shut
Amen they need to be ashamed and shut their lips!
Christian apologetics is silencing those who should have stayed silent in attacking the faith
Word
They should have kept quiet in the beginning
The last paragraph makes the point that the Skeptic Annotated Bible don’t even have a worldview supplied that can even allow them to start off with saying a contradiction is a problem: ” The worldview of the author of the Skeptic Annotated Bible actually doesn’t even allow for such a thing as the law of non-contradiction to be meaningful and intelligible. In other words for him to try to disprove the Bible by pointing out that there’s a Bible contradiction doesn’t even make sense within his own worldview.” With no foundation they should have kept quiet
The critics’ ‘understanding’ surprises me– I’ll take your interpretation even though you don’t use the KJV because unlike the critics you still have the Holy Spirit teaching you.
Uhm thanks? The blog seems to have some that do read and comment from time to time that are KJVO and while I’m not one I am grateful that those commented do see I love the Bible and want to defend it.
You are not trying to twist the Word of God, that is a difference with the skeptics

Excuse me dear brother, I get points 1-9, but I don’t know what point ten says. Could you explain that like I’m five? Thank you!
Best way to understand is understand Presuppositional apologetics; here’s lectures that are helpful https://veritasdomain.wordpress.com/2011/12/07/free-greg-bahnsen-apologetics-course-from-gospel-coalition/
