What is a man and a woman?
This series of posts we will see seven truths derived from Genesis 1:26-28 concerning God’s creation of man and woman so that we would understand God’s design of manhood and womanhood for our lives today.
Last time we saw Truth # 1: God created both men and female and God has the authority to say what man and woman is supposed to be.
In this post we will look at point 2 and 3.
Truth #2: Both man and woman are different than other creation and creatures
- Point: Man is unique than other creatures and creation.
- Proof
- “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;” (Genesis 1:26a)
- Man is unique than other creatures since he is made in the image of God.
- No other creatures in Scripture is described as being made in the image of God.
- God did not want the readers to miss that man is made in the image of God, note it being stated twice in two similar ways:
- “in Our image”
- “according to Our likeness”
- Again in verse 27 we see the verse stating twice the truth that we are made in the image of God:
- “God created man in His own image,”
- “in the image of God He created him”
- This truth that man is unique goes against the idea in the Secular West that man is essentially the same as animals but more better evolved. No, instead we see here that man is made in the image of God.
- “Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness;” (Genesis 1:26a)
- Practice
- Do you believe man is different than animals and other creatures?
- We need to make sure that we live our lives more than just animals in just barely eating, sleeping and reproducing. We need to obey what God wants of us as male and female human beings since we are His unique creatures.
Truth # 3: Both man and woman have worth because they are made in the image of God
- Point: Man and woman are both equal in worth in that both are made in the image of God.
- Proof
- We have earlier seen verses on man and woman being created in His image.
- Genesis 9:6-7 echoes Genesis 1:26-28:
- Both passage talks about man is in the image of God (Genesis 1:26a, 27; Genesis 9:6)
- Both talks about being fruitful and multiplying (Genesis 1:26a)
- Note the penalty for murdering a man because a man is made in the image of God: “Whoever sheds man’s blood, By man his blood shall be shed, For in the image of God He made man.” (Genesis 1:28; Genesis 9:7)
- Thus both man and woman as image of God means they have worth.
- It is not just murder however that shows us we can wrong those made in the image of God. We can also curse people which is also wrong: “With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the likeness of God” (James 3:9)
- Picture: If we are as the atheist say, not created in the image of God and we are nothing more than evolved apes, there is no value to human beings since we are all nothing more than stardusts. But that’s not true with the Christian worldview.
- Practice
- Both man and woman have value and dignity in God’s eyes. Do you treat other men and women that way?
- This verses should correct those who abuse women (and men).

Good detail about all men and women being created in God’s image and worthy of respect. I think too often we as Christians adopt a superiority mindset when it comes to unbelievers. This brings to mind the other extreme; the popular attitude, even found within evangelicalism, that everyone is a “child of God” thus nullifying the need for spiritual rebirth in Christ.
Good reminder that there are ditches in the two sides of a road that we can fall into. There’s always the possibility of two erroneous extremes we must avoid.
